Because it's too small for all but the lightest of users. A lot of customers would be just fine with a base 32 gig (which would cost Apple a couple of bucks more), but end up ponying up an extra $100 for the 64 gig.

It's absolute marketing genius by Apple as it forces customers into a higher margin item. It's a d1ck move. If it was an insurance company, pharmaceutical company or oil company we would go ballistic. But since it's Apple, a lot of folks around here give them a free pass.
Ah. I'll probably get something higher than 16GB next time around. It does force the customers to ay extra for extra storage rather than providing with the customers with say 32GB to begin with.

Woah ! 16GB in 2015 is pretty much unnaceptable. And 300 dollars at that ! I'm wanting to get a iPhone 6s since I'm a MacBook Pro user now, but I'm thinking about just getting the 6 now if it's going to be 300 dollars on contract for a mere 16GB.

Also, an upgraded Touch ID sensor? What's wrong with it? Mine must have failed like 10 times since I've had my 6 from launch day.

If you workout with your iPhone it will fail a lot more. Sensor doesn't like sweaty fingers.

Or BBQ sauce fingers for that matter.

those are the ones that stay glued to it and are anti-social imo

Yes, smartphones are when people started being anti-social.

All the people upset about the 16 gb base model option, yes, really upset, astonishingly, should just move on and buy a different brand of phone with a 32 gb option. Hopefully, that would allow them to find some amount of inner peace in their lives.

Really it's not healthy keeping all the pent-up displeasure over an inanimate piece of tech.

After some thinking I figured that Apple is probably keeping the 16GB based on market study. There are a lot of people out there who do not know what a GB is and don't download 500mb games. They just use it for messaging, looking at pictures, Youtube and so...

You know, on one hand it's ridiculous Apple still has a $700 phone with 16GB of storage, but on the other hand, seeing how iOS 9 will bring apps with a much smaller footprint while also being smaller itself, I'm kinda curious how much space we'll safe with it.

iCloud be damned! 16GB is NOT enough for a smartphone anymore. Seriously. Sure, people on a budget will still buy it to save money...but I am sure it's a frustrating experience for most. Me? I use my smartphone as my main travel camera, so it's always 128GB for me.

why are people complaining about the 16gb? if you don't want it get the 64gb... duh.
And we do - no one is claiming that they are being forced into a configuration that they don't want. Our point is that the existence of the base 16 GB is for no other reason that Apple trying to drive profit and isn't in the best interest of the consumer. The space occupied by the OS and photos/4k video make the base offering extremely limited, when the cost to upgrade the RAM to 32 GB would be almost negligible. Apple certainly has a right to make a profit, but one of the Apple's core values is to produce products that have positive impact on people's lives in how they interact with each other and their overall use of technology in their lives. Hence the strong fitness emphasis, HomeKit home automation, ease of use in the operating systems they make, gesture-based hardware, etc. - it is about making life simpler and more productive through intuitive technology platforms vs. enslaving people to the complexity of the technology that they use. 16 GB means that anyone making any real use of the camera and videos will have to focus more on managing the memory/storage of their device. The 16 GB is certainly functional - but Apple has never been about just being functional.

iOS 9 takes up 4.6gb. There is still more than 70% of the space available. (And with new app thinning, it will save another 3gb)

My wife has had 16gb for the past 4 years - never run out of space. In fact, she has over 4gb still available. 16gb is 'too much' for her. :)

This is the type of memory SHE needs for her low intensive phone use with 10 apps and pictures. She has no need to pay more money for something she won't use. Apple understands these users.
Why would she have to pay more? I think most are advocating Apple start with 32GB and eliminate the 16GB. 32,64,128.
There's no need for that to cost more. I doubt your wife needs 16GB. More like 16GB is adequate for her use case. 32GB would serve that exact same use case. It would also allow her to expand her use case if she chose to do so.

$1.99 for 20gb is pretty cheap right?

Are those prices for the 6S+? or is there actually going to be a price spike too?

20GB? Yes, $1.99 is expensive when you can get a great many 20GB accounts for free around the web. What if you and your spouse each want 20GB? $4 per month. What if 20GB wasn't enough (it's not), but 200GB was more than enough (It's fine for a few iPhone pictures)? So now you and your wife are spending out on 400GB and only using, say 70GB between you?

have you seen how much dropbox charge for 1TB? and you can share access.

Apple need to at least integrate collaboration into iCloud even if they're too tight to open the door for family sharing. iCloud could act as a server, but instead it's just a big folder linked to your one account on a hard drive somewhere that only you can access.

If 20GB is enough for you, then fill your boots, but this is 2015.

What's wrong with the 16?

The issue we have with 16gigs is that it's clearly a money grab on Apple's part.

To offer 16 as an entry level option they are basically forcing users to opt into iCloud storage for a monthly fee (more money for Apple) or upgrade to 64gig options (which costs Apple dollars to which they charge us $100).

The end result is that Apple gets to tell shareholders that they've made more profits at higher margin (margin, for those who aren't familiar with the term, is essentially the difference between cost of goods and average selling price. If you can increase your Average Selling Price and/or decrease your Cost of Goods you'll increase your margin - Apple does both here by not offering a higher capacity drive they can keep costs of the entry level iPhone down, while making it more likely that anyone who's struggled with 16gig storage in the past would upgrade to the higher tier phone. If they offered 32gigs many on 16gig 5s phones would probably stick with the low-end tier as it's essentially a free upgrade - which would hurt their cost (the drive is more expensive) and decrease the ASP as more people would buy the first iPhone in the tier than the mid-range phone).

Of course the biggest slap in the face with all this is that App develops continue to create more graphically intense games which take up more space on your device. If the rumors of 4K video recording are true 16gigs won't go very far (even with iCloud as you can't write directly to iCloud and iCloud does not allow you to load apps so you're constantly deleting and downloading apps if you want to play different games or take more photos/videos).

Apple has - at least since the iPod days - had this three tier pricing strategy and it works great. Good, Better Best. They are essentially the same product on the surface, but each of them have slightly better things to them - with the iPod and the iPhone this has been storage - with the Watch it's exterior components. The question becomes - is 16gigs really "good" or has it become outdated?

My mom barely uses apps or takes pictures. Apple should make a base 8GB iPhone 6s!

Here are some facts:
1. 16GB has been the base iPhone since 2009
2. Since 2009, Apple has given us Retina HD displays, developers have given us richer apps,
3. Cameras have been upgraded to 1080P HD video (60 fps) and HD 240fps.
4. Apple refuses to change base storage despite all of us

I get some people will never use 16GB, but then again, some people may never use 8GB. So should Apple cater to them? Why Apple has succeeded so far is that care about customer experience. 16GB for a 2015 iPhone is anything but that.

My wife has a 16GB she's consistently running on out of space, mostly photos. I always go big on capacity so I never have that stress..yet. I'm curious if a 256GB'r is on the horizon?

having read the arguments about the 16gb storage, don't blame apple, ask your fellow posters on MR defending it. These are the people apple is targeting, and while it can continue selling a 16gb model, why should they offer more?

Seems like lots of people buy very expansive phones and use them for very basic tasks. My music and videos take up more than 16gb. Actually my photo library is over 16gb after all these years....

16GB is quite small - you only get around 12.8GB of actual space. I guess the time is coming that Apple should introduce a 32GB at the same price point (oh, this would be good) and get rid of the 16GB. We're essentially paying more when Apple could make it 32GB/64GB/128GB - I guess they're being crafty and not doing this (which seems to be what the consumers want)

LMAO @ all the Apple sheep and fanboys who defend the 16GB in 2015. It's gonna be the same stupid arguments:

"Don't like 16GB, buy 64gb then."
"Don't like 16GB, let's drop the 16GB model altogether and keep the higher capacity models at the same price then."
"There are people who don't need more than 16GB"
"16GB allows Apple to put in higher quality components"

Miss any?

Well it's clear that the forum is going to get divided between 16GB isn't enough and 16GB is more than enough.

My greatest regret was buying a 16GB iPad Air 2.
I love that thing but I filled up 90% memory on day one. :(

Unfortunately if they keep 16GB model, that probably means no 4K recording feature :/
