People defending the 16GB are not thinking straight. The problem is not that the 16GB phone exists, the problem is that Apple's asking too much money for it. They're asking an incredible amount of money for a phone with a storage capacity exactly the same as 6 years ago. They have even increased the price of the iPhone by about €150 since then.

I guess these people don't really have a sense of the actual price of an iPhone and only see contract prices.

I usually buy the iPhone outright so I pay the full price.
In 2010 iPhone 4 with 16GB costed 659€, I don't remember the price in $ for the USA. Back in 2010 16GB was a good amount of memory because the phone had a camera with few MP and app were not so demanding.
In 2012 iPhone 5 16GB was 729€, so a price increase (in part due to taxes in my country).
In 2014 the base model was still 729, but 16GB were really not enough so I went for the 64GB and spent 839€.

So after 4 years, to get a phone that suits my needs, I went from 659 to 839, that's almost 200€
Sure the iPhone is great, I love the product but I'd really like to save 100€ and have 32GB.
16GB may be enough for some users, they may be ok for business, but it would cost Apple a few $ to increase the storage so it is just greed, let's call it with the right name.

If they made the low end 32GB we would all be confused about what Apple are up to. Some hidden evil to be sure.

Is it just me or has anticipation for the 6s felt a lot less than previous iPhone launches? I think that the 6 and 6+ launch was so huge, it's dwarfing this one. I honestly don't know many people that are going to get this one. Me included and I usually get the newest model every year.

...The sweet spot is 32gb, but they don't offer that, instead they provide a 64gb option for the same $100 that used to only give us 32GB.

That's awesome, however also kinda gives us the message that they could also afford to sell us a 32GB phone at the current 16gb price point.

The force touch motors and electronics are free? New cameras are free? Improved touch ID is free? larger bundle of free software and lifetime upgrades are free?

There is Apple's 30% margin stuff in these memory prices but what has happened over time is that while holding the Flash storage somewhat constant Apple has stuff more other hardware into the Phone. That will drive up the base cost independent of the Flash RAM size. Apple gets volume discounts and new components come down over time but at least some of the savings on more affordable Flash memory has gone into more other stuff ( hardware and software) being included in the phone. The baseline component cost of the phone is staying about the same. As some components get cheaper, Apple throws other more expensive components into to keep the price about the same.

It is better than it was 16GB + ( $100 for another 16) -> 32 GB +( $100 for another 32) -> 64GB is now
16GB + ($100 for another 48GB ) -> 64GB + ($100 for another 64) -> 128GB

The additional $100 is buying more Flash. But Flash isn't the majority of the baseline cost of the phone. Probably not even the most expensive component cost.

I strongly feel that the current space / price model is based more on profit, than it is customer service.

16GB is manageable for a pretty wide group of folks. Just take some stuff off. The photos haven't looked at in forever? You can store those on a PC/Mac ( Cloud isn't a requirement unless the iPhone is the only computer and only storage drive you own). Giggle game 42 that you stopped playing 2 years ago... yeah it is time to delete from local storage.

16GB isn't a good pack rat phone but it is hardly as limiting as folks are making out. The new "app slimmer" mechanisms will make that better. ( a significant chunk of apps are resources that won't be used on a modern iphone.... why store them in the first place? Those apps without app slimming... yet another reason to archive stuff that just don't use. )

It isn't about customer service but customer value. The vast majority of folks are buying phones not primarily based on storage capacity. if there were then probably SD cards would be the top priority feature of every phone. They aren't. ( and grossly obsessed over by the tech porn press. ) Somehow that other hardware/software that Apple is including makes enough of a value perception that millions of folks buy the phone.

16's more than enough, i've never gone past 60% capacity i don't understand why people need 64 and 128 on a damn phone, there's just no need.

those are the ones that stay glued to it and are anti-social imo
Ha! You do make me laugh!
So you don't have any music on your phone? I could fill 32gb just with my music collection.
We all use our phones differently, so saying there is just no need is daft.
It's just apple being greedy, it probably cost pence to put 32g instead of 16gb in these phones but they will continue to do it as long as people continue to buy them!

What typically happens to the pricing of the old phone (6) when a new phone is released (6s)?

That's why you and most people are wrong. You just get information from this board while Tim Cook had the data of installation based number for those are due with 2 year contract. Remember this: 6/6+ only took 20-25% installation base last time.

Apple is greedy? Maybe you should ask yourself why you are so cheap to spend $100 for 64GB?

As an Apple investor, I'm happy to see them hanging on to the 16GB model and moving more people to paid cloud subscriptions who have the lower-tier storage option and need more. This will likely be the last phone that will sport a 16GB offering in the U.S.

What mobile OS are you using that takes up 8GB of space? Windows 8 RT?

Well, it does take almost 4 Gigs of space. 25% is a pretty big chunk.
The 16gb targets corporate clients. My company gives an iPhone to all managers and up and there are many rules you have to follow regarding what you can and cannot do with the phone. If you follow the rules, 16gb is more than enough. Thus, it would be just a waste to have more capacity.

What do lower level employees get? Galaxies and Notes?

16GB is manageable if you sync and backup to iTunes. Basically offload photos and videos frequently and don't go crazy on apps and local music/videos. If default was 32GB, would anyone buy 64GB or higher? Probably very few.

I wouldn't mind so much if iCloud was less expensive. And family sharing was more accessible. And shared libraries made more sense. [Family] Shared data tariffs could change all of this.

I agree, the whole iCloud photo aspect is awful. that fact that if you keep your photo iCloud data down to < 5gb, then it deletes pics off the phone, which can store much more... I wish for iCloud synced photos and MOVIES, to work just like photo stream did yesterday! why should I pay extra $ to have synchronicity so I keep pictures on my 16/64/128gb phone.. something is really way wrong here. I'm looking to export all data (as i shoot) to dropbox and use automator to bring data into Photos.app. that way I have all my pics on phone and photos.app and still be able to go out to lunch.

I always just consider the 2nd storage tier the entry price for a new iPhone - we used to get 32GB models at our price point, now get 64GB. :)

How I see this thread.

Yeah this is a weird launch. I feel like there's not much hype. People are asking when the new phones are coming, but like you said there so much hype around the 6 and 6 Plus.

The iPhone 7 launch is probably gonna be insane tho. I can only imagine what they have up their sleeves.

This is why Americans failed in education especially math: 16GB -> 32GB is better deal than 16GB->64GB for $100.

They added 64GB for the price of 32GB...hello?

Don't get why people are lambasting 16GB . Free choice is to buy 64GB. More money Wah, was, was.

A one time buy for most stretched over 2 years.

Yes, weak of Apple to not make it 32GB, but they decide what is best for them (No corporation cares about customers as long as they buy)
Plus, everybody has different requirements and use patterns.
Grandma and Pa want to just make phone calls, can be taught face time and e-mail and photos.

Enough for them or their heads explode.

Beginner iPhoners can learn how to economize and figure out whether 16GB is good or bad.

And where is Taylor Swift when you need her, like now?

Disgusting. No other way to describe this travesty of good design that Apple loves to talk about so much. There is no respect to be had in trying to upsell consumers to mid tier and above models.

If Tim Cook actually cared so much about doing good and using Apple to express his liberal beliefs, he ought to include with every new iPhone more accessories than just EarPods, an adapter, and those stupid Apple stickers. Apple continues to reap in records profits by giving us less and less. And not just battery life. Their back-to-school promotion is nothing more than an insult. They are essentially saying: Go buy a Surface. And a free U2 album doesn't cut it, Mr. Cook. At the very least you could have given us an album by a more relevant artist than a dinosaur band from Ireland. I imagine U2 concerts resemble something out of Spinal Tap. A smattering of clapping followed by some coughing as people awkwardly look away in an otherwise empty stadium.

Does Apple even care anymore? Does Mr. Cook hold the same values and principles as the ones shared by his predecessor? I see no evidence of this since his accession to the throne. I see a man who has converted his congregants to a new monotheistic god, the almighty dollar. Don't be mistaken, my friends, the September 9th event is nothing more than a tent revival and the iPhone and Apple Watch are the wares this false ministry sells to those who don't know any better.

iOS 9 takes up 4.6gb. There is still more than 70% of the space available. (And with new app thinning, it will save another 3gb)

My wife has had 16gb for the past 4 years - never run out of space. In fact, she has over 4gb still available. 16gb is 'too much' for her. :)

This is the type of memory SHE needs for her low intensive phone use with 10 apps and pictures. She has no need to pay more money for something she won't use. Apple understands these users.

Sure, but I think alot of people are thinking that the price shouldn't move, just the memory should initially start at 32gb.

If they weren't buying based on storage capacity, there would be no need for the 64gb and 128gb models. Everyone would be buying 16s.

Samsung finally woke up to what Apple was doing and took out the SD card slots and went with non-removable batteries and non-upgradable memory.

Thankfully the others haven't done this.

A 128gb SD card on Amazon is $60. So a person can get about 150gb on a regular Android phone. Meanwhile Apple is charging $100 to go from 64gb to 128gb. Pretty much pure profit.

I just saw on Amazon that Sandisk has a 200gb card for $200. That's insane. Meanwhile Apple charges you $200 to go up just 112gb. And no card slot. They want to be 100% in control of how much you can store on the phone. Cloud service is becoming more popular, but a lot of people still want their apps, movies, music and such still on their phone.

When th
Apple is greedy? Maybe you should ask yourself why you are so cheap to spend $100 for 64GB?
when the price of the iPhone is overinflated anyway, an extra $100 for storage that cost a maximum of $10. Yes in my mind is apple greed.
+ being on a budget does not make me cheap thank you very much!!

Because the base model should be 32GB at that same price, as they are making a killing off their storage tiers as it is... is where I believe most people are coming from. Make a base model, priced at the current base model price, be a little bit more realistic to what consumers need for when they purchase from the AppStore and iTunes (yes, more money for you, Apple) and take higher MP pictures. I believe a base model at 16GB could be made available to businesses, but consumers should have access to a base-priced iPhone that comes with more than 16GB. The 16GB phone should come with a big warning sticker for consumers that might not be savvy enough to help them understand that it's probably not going to be enough for them.

Apple happens to make their base business model available to consumers as well. If you don't want this, consider the 64GB to be the base model. Problem solved.

Hey! Apple just introduced a consumer iPhone with a 64Gb base model!!!!
