LMFAO. You must be joking.

This is the kind of nonsense you hear from someone who really can't/doesn't/won't understand the whole of the Apple ecosystem. Amazon has nothing to compare to. They have a website, where you can buy em pee threez. Big deal.

Amazon sells books, movies, music and apps. So for many people - it's a full ecosystem. What (not quanity) does Apple sell that Amazon doesn't in terms of content?

And if you already have a smartphone then why bother?

Screen size?

This just in.

Amazon-brand 26" LCD hdtvs are only $200.

Everyone quick. Grab one for your living room. Forget about those more expensive 42" hdtvs.

you are making some terrible arguments in this thread, take a time out and think it through

The Fire looks like a great product to be sure. But it's a different class of tablet from the iPad. That is why they don't directly compete.

I think everyone agrees that these devices aren't directly comparable. However, they are competing for the same consumer dollars. The entire tablet market is made up of consumers that want/need different things and they place value on certain features accordingly. Right now, there is no device selling well that address the segment of buyers that want a smaller device at a lower cost. Right now, these potential consumers have the choice of an iPad (or Tab/Xoom/Transformer) or a smaller device that may not have as decent an ecosystem.

If the Fire is a huge hit, then the folks that value a smaller screen and lower price will have the option to buy a device that fits their needs.

That's the point of this article and survey. Trying to assess the impact that the Fire will have on iPad (et al) sales.

i see more people with kindles on the NYC subway than ipads. A LOT of people with ipods, especially Nano's.

Come on man, it's the subway. What are you willing to lose to theft! If you could disguise your iPad as a big kindle, you might hold on to it a little longer!

:)

I don't have a pre-order in on a KF but am anxious to see how it is received by the public. Our daughter is a little rough on gadgets and $199 is easier to take then $500+.

This just in.

People like small TVs in kitchens and bedrooms, like a 26" LCD.

People like large TVs in theater rooms and living rooms, like a 42" HDTV

People hate carrying large devices on trains, buses, etc.

No tvs are all the same. I can watch movies and tv shows on mine and play games. Same as your tv. And mine cost $500 less. /sarcasm

Reality. The Fire is a cheap piece of dirt, that just happens to have a color display that is large in size. That is the only aspect of it that is "comparable" to the iPad. Evidenced by the never-ending industry of absolutely horrible digital picture frames, there are markets for products that are total crap, and mimic the functionality of real products.

The reason this product is so cheap by comparison to the iPad....is because its not remotely the same. Nothing about it is similar. Components suck, performance suck, applications suck.

In short, it sucks.

So you've used one?

You're clearly biased and/or pissed off that some research DARED to report that some people are choosing another device over an iPad. Get over it. The iPad isn't for everyone. And it's good that people who don't want to spend the money on something they don't want or need have an option to get something they do.

Your attitude is what "sucks"

please post a video of you using a Fire

Not to mention Amazon is selling the Fire at a LOSS. None of the pundits cares to emphasize it enough.

You are quite dellusional LOL

But keep at it. Keep drinking the :apple:-juice

I think it just illustrates that when given a viable option - one where there's a good competing ecosystem - people can make a choice.

As I've maintained - while I love my iPad - many people don't want to shell out 499+ when all they really want is a media consumption device and some email/web surfing. Yes - UI is great on the iPad - but not everyone wants to spend the extra money when (now) there's a choice and one backed by an ecosystem of books, music, video and apps.

I see these stats as obvious. I think the Kindle Fire sells well to those who had no plans on buying an iPad but also those that had no viable choice before Amazon entered the game.

The Nook tablet has better specs - but I still think that they won't do as well as the Fire because B&N doesn't have the same ecosystem.

I prefer the nook tablet over the kindle fire... Too bad it is butt ass ugly though...

I am still rocking the first gen iPad though so don't need either one. But if I were to get one it would be the nook tablet, better specs for the money.

Cloud

Notice how the fanboys completely disregard Amazon's cloud service.

This takes care of the local storage on the Fire.

But fanboys are "clouded" themselves LOL

I was going to say notice how the fanboys put a product on a pedestal that no one has even used. :D

Screen size doesn't matter though. Haven't you heard?

I haven't heard that.

But I know that it matters to me because I can't read (conveniently) on that iPod screen.

Can't speak for a whole market. But I think the jump from 4" - 7" does make a difference.

For now, I'll try and seek out the proof that it doesn't matter (in sales?).

Uhh Amazon has an enormous selection of music, almost comparable to the amount of music Apple has available, and far more e-books, TV shows, and movies available than Apple. Take all that, add some apps, and you've now got a very competitive tablet.

I hate when people say Kindle Fire doesn't compete with iPad. The fact is they indeed directly compete with each other.

Let's see, both do
Email
Web
Books
Music
Apps
Magazines

Not understanding how it's not a competitor product. Someone please explain!!

They compete. But it is apples to oranges comparison. Actually, more accurately, its an Apple to Half Apple comparison.

The Fire can do many of the same things on a much smaller scale.

It also cannot do many of the same things as it lack storage space and as robust an ecosystem. Also, if you don't mind Amazon knowing every site you visit, when where and how often...then their web browser is just fine for you.

What drives me crazy is people saying the Fire is 80% of an iPad at half the price. That is an incredibly myopic point of view.

Amazon Web Services, don't think you are bright enough to understand what all that brings to the table

No one is putting the Kindle Fire on a pedestal. People are just stating why they would choose it over the ipad, since that is where this discussion as gone.

It's funny how all Apple fanboys trash everything other than Apple's products. They can't even seen the good things from competition.

Nope. Screen size does not matter. Fire same as iPad.

Wait until actual sales figures are announced next quarter. They're not even on sale yet.

I don't think you understand what an "ecosystem" is. Or you do, but you think only Apple has one. Hell, when some people say "Apple Ecosystem", I imagine their eyes glaze over, and they get one of those thousand yard stares that creep everyone out.

I'm already thinking about putting it on my list of overly used big words and phrases people throw around on the internet all the time so they look like they know what they're talking about. It'll be there alongside "innovative" and "relevant".

So you can no longer say stuff like "the Apple Ecosystem is innovative because it collaborates to the objectives of my principals, and is relevant to my chosen preliminary injunction of patent infringements you obviously don't understand. It Just Works. You mad, bro?".

Okay, just to clarify, Amazon and Apple are quite similar in alot of ways. They both host streaming movies, music, books, ect. The only real difference is that Apple uses standalone software, while Amazon hosts their services via a webpage. So no, it's not "just a webpage where you can buy em pee threez". Only an idiot would say something like that, let alone think it.

You're not an idiot...are you?

Apple has a better ecosystem for music and apps. The one thing Amazon does better is eBooks. It could have leveraged its ebook library as a Kindle exclusive and used that advantage to sell their hardware, but they're gonna keep the eBook library cross-platform.

This shows they care more about selling books than they do hardware. The opposite of Apple, which cares more about the hardware profit than it does about the media profit.

Amazon isn't trying to toss the iPad off its throne. It'll be happy positioning the Fire as a budget tablet, as long as it helps sell more ebooks. If it can find a niche submarket, like the Nook Color did among women, even better.
