At this point there is absolutely no excuse for not implementing contactless payments. Sure have your proprietary payment methods but give customers what they want and implement the universal ones as well.

While I still buy on rare occasion from Walmart, Lowes and Homedepot etc... the lack of Apple Pay and other contactless systems is just plain dumb. It costs the company very little to implement as the infrastructure has long existed and customer security is higher as well. The arrogance of some companies is not surprising and insular out of touch management along with a faulty business strategy is usually to blame.

Kroger charges $5 for curbside pickup.

Target charges $0 for curbside pickup and has ApplePay in both their app and cash registers.

Target wins hands down.
Exactly... Target has always been more customer focused than many other major retailers. They adapt and change with consumer needs, tastes and expectations. They maintain their infrastructure, keep the stores fresh and control their brand. One reason they have consistently grown their business over the decades.

Too many comments to swift through. So if covered .. sorry.

HEB in Texas is still HELL bent not taking Apple Pay, they are probably one of the fastest growing chains in Texas. They are killing other grocery retailers, like Randalls and Tom Thumb. This is a win for Krogers, they can't roll it out fast enough to maybe capture some market that is looking for grocery vendor that takes Apple Pay.

The apps, like at Sam's club, great, why not, rather scan as I go along, and Apple Pay from the app and walk out the door. As more and more states are banning bags, or charging for bags like most of Europe does, why not scan, and bag in your own recycle bags as you shop, when done head to your GAS powered car.

Walmart may never come around, but Home Depot and Lowes, they will, when you have smaller home improvements like ACE Hardware taking Apple Pay, they will have to do something!

Anyhow, congrats on a win for Apple Pay, even if it is a test bed, it will expand in time with Krogers. A win for consumers too, a loss for thieves! Contactless payment is the way to go!

Kroger is the only grocer in my area. So of course, the whole family has starved for years until we can cut Apple in on each food purchase transaction. The kids are only about 65% as tall as their classmates and we can count all of our ribs from 20 paces... but who needs basic nutrition if Apple can't have a bite of every dollar spent? ;)

Oh my God!! Without access to ApplePay.... how did you ever buy groceries? Did you have to resort paying with Dogecoin or something?? 🤣

Oh come on! Cries in Tesla.

The Tesla app has Apple Pay for a lot of things, but no CarPlay.:mad::mad:

HEB "claims" they will be getting Apple Pay by the end of this year, but I will believe it when I see it.

Kroger-owned chain Fred Meyer also recently started accepting Apple Pay at its stores in the Northwest, a spokesperson confirmed, while its North Carolina-based banner Harris Teeter tweeted it is "working towards accepting Apple Pay."
Hmm... I live in the Pacific Northwest and shop at Fred Meyer - NFC / Apple Pay is not currently an option at my local store, at least.

Before the virtual Apple Pay stuff, we just threw the apples at the cashier the old fashioned way. Then you have to run really fast away to avoid getting the assault charge. Sheesh, kids these days have it too easy.

Having to use their app, along with them storing your card info, kind of defeats some of the purpose.

Man, once you get used to scan and go there ain't no way you're going back through a register. You only type in your card information ONCE. Just one time. It's not like you have to enter it in each time you use it. You literally pick something off the shelf, scan it, pay for it, laugh at the people in line using registers, and go to the exit door.

It’s wild to me that these stores deactivate a feature which they could easily support. Does that mean you can’t do tap to pay with your credit card at those stores either?! Not supporting tap to pay with credit card is like only offering cash. It would alienate so many potential customers here
They try to force use of debit or their own payment systems because the fees are lower than credit cards.

But they do accept Kroger Pay, which costs them more money than regular Apple Pay, as it runs all cards as "card not present" ! It all boils down to the data they can collect and mine!

Kroger is trying to buy Albertsons to become the biggest grocer in the USA.

The DOJ has considered blocking the deal on anti trust lack of competition grounds.

One fear in anti trust is higher prices, another is less customer orientation. The latter is certainly what Kroger has done with Apple Pay these last 8 years.

Albertsons offers Apple Pay.

Kroger by offering Apple Pay is trying to close the DOJ perceptual gap by offering it now as a sign of customer orientation… it’s a diversion designed to distract from the bigger issue, over consolidation of the grocery industry which will ultimately lead to higher prices and in some other way a lack of customer orientation.

That’s part of it but given Kroger’s scale they very well may have agreements which modify the CNP status.

It’s not a tech thing, this is fine to increase marginal profit by forcing customers to use in-house payment systems built around either debit cards or direct ach withdrawal from a bank account.

The fees on both are bonsideranly less than in a credit card.

That difference flows to the merchants bottom line.

The CurrentC system was supposed to achieve this for smaller merchants but it was poorly launched and inconvenient to use. Many retailers didn’t like the friction it introduced in the payment process so they bailed leaving just the big shops to take it over.

I called Kroger HQ maybe 6 or 7 years ago and found my way to the c-suite. I asked the assistant there when k would have ap. She said they had tried it out somewhere out west. IIRC Arizona, but lack of interest due to Kroger pay being offered, they had discontinued AP.

I laughed and said, you don’t think it was capturing the extra percent or two that drove the decision? We both kinda laughed because we both knew this PR line wasn’t working with me.

It’s quite strange from the UK perspective that there are still stores in the US which block Apple Pay.

Acceptance here is 100%, so much so that I can go everywhere with just my phone/watch to pay for things and not even think about my wallet.

And cash? I can barely remember the last time I needed an ATM…
Over here in Switzerland, some cash machines are being removed. But this will take awhile as lots of folks here like cash.

I’d love to use Apple Pay more, but just seems that the places I shop the most frequent still don’t support it. Costco, Fry’s (Kroger), Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart. So even when I can use it I just kinda forget.
You should be good to go at Costco
