I think a new "iPhone 5G" would be rather weird given the old iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S.
True. And apple has never used weird names or re-used names. ;-)

I just want the phone to look like the current ipad pros
It makes sense that the whole iPhone 12 lineup to resemble a standard edge to edge from top to bottom notch-less screen.
Would it not be more accurate to describe the 2018 iPad Pro design as closer to the 5/5s design instead of the 4/4s?
Agree completely - been waiting for a high-end followup to the SE. Maybe that 5.4" model will be it. Other than what you mentioned, the flat sides had the added benefit that you could stand this iPhone on its side - useful for doing quick group shots. The iPhone 5 was my favorite design because flat sides are a lot better feeling in the hand than rounded ones. I feel like all the phones since the 6 have felt really slippery in the hand. Even with a case on, the rounded sides feel awkward. Flat is best.
Since the iPhone 4 Apple has been on a 4-iteration cycle. You can pick apart the differences but these machines share a similar design language
The ice cream sandwich:
4, 4S, 5, 5S
The rounded edges design:
6, 6S, 7, 8
Notch:
X, XR/S, 11, and probably 12.

Exactly (as I also mentioned earlier); and exactly why rumors/predictions are insane to bet on, at least anytime up until a month or two before actual release.Would it not be more accurate to describe the 2018 iPad Pro design as closer to the 5/5s design instead of the 4/4s?
It seems that many people will buy the iPhone Mini if closer or slightly smaller than 5.4”
The 5/5s were a different design as they weren't sandwiched glass at all. They were more of the beginning of the next unibody sort of phase. So a bit of a blended bridge between the two and I think distinctive enough to stand alone. And remember the 8 shared the same release year as the X (within months), so I could see Apple do something similar with the iPhone 12. I think the iPhone 12 Pro will take on the new design to differentiate it more as a Pro device, kinda like the iPad Pro which has a design similar to the iPhone 5/5s that feels a bit more industrial. That seems to be the feeling they're going for with the new camera system.Since the iPhone 4 Apple has been on a 4-iteration cycle. Now if this report holds water then that follows right into that 4-iteration pattern. The 8 came together in the same year with the $999 X design and the 12 should be the last notch design phone and it’ll come together with the ice cream sandwich v2 (which may still contain a notch) design debuting as the next $999 machine.
I really love the 5.8 screen size. I think its perfect. I find 6.1 and 6.7 too big. I hope the 5.4 screen doesnt look significantly smaller than the 5.8.
4s was probably the best designed iPhone to date. Hopefully thill get rid of the camera bump. If so I’m in.
I’m sorry, what?SPOILER ALERT: 2021 Iphones to include waterproof plug-in. I guess for the sake of "innovation" is why apple is doing moves like this. They are just moving and switching around designs to say that this is the new thing?
I second this (as I said earlier). I'm concerned that 5.4 would be too small. I like the 5.8. Not going to lie, sometimes is a little bit on the bigger side, but other times it's on the smaller size. I would buy it if it goes up to 6.1. Higher than that I think is way too big. But also smaller than 5.8 seems too small. That would be a huge mistake not to have a Pro line model with 5.8-6.1.

Instead of changing the designs every 2 years, it’s now every 3 years.Interesting. It seems strange that an S model would have a redesign as opposed to the 11 - maybe they'll skip to 12?
The fact remains that the iphone 5 is the top design apple ever made on an iphone. The metall/glass back is the most beautiful back on any iphone. I will patiently wait for the new design but also for an in display fingerprint sensor and the removal of the god damn notch😀.
Then i will purchase my next iphone.
