In a brief research note highlighting Apple's suppliers for its popular AirPods wireless earphones, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that new AirPods with a wireless charging case will debut in the first quarter of 2019, with an "all-new design model" following in the first quarter of 2020. The updates are predicted to drive strong sales growth for the product.

Kuo notes that fewer than 5 percent of iPhone users currently own AirPods, and with over 1 billion iPhone users worldwide, there are "great potential growth opportunities" for the accessory.

Nearly a year ago, Kuo predicted Apple would launch upgraded AirPods in the second half of 2018, but Apple's difficulties in bringing its AirPower charging mat to market have undoubtedly impacted its AirPods plans to some degree. Just ahead of Apple's October media event, Kuo noted he was uncertain about the timing for an AirPods update, indicating it could come late in the fourth quarter or early in the first quarter of 2019.

Wireless charging works wonderfully on my iPhone X!

I use it all the time at my local Starbucks to charge my iPhone and get work done.

It will be a nice feature to also be able to charge my AirPods through the wireless charging at Starbucks as well!

I guess you never heard of first generation products laying the foundation for what's possible with improvements over the years building on that. AirPods aren't waterproof and devices are all becoming Qi wireless charging compliant. Both of those are low hanging fruit. Apple has also had the time to improve the chips inside AirPods so that they're always listening for Hey Siri and can be made more battery efficient.

When was the last (first?) time you saw a first generation product coming out with no room for improvement? Why didn't Apple just launch the iPhone X in 2007 and instead had 10 years of improvements? Was it because of planned obsolescence? Get serious.
Yeah I suppose you’re right. Instead we all just keep buying the same product over and again, that’s always slightly “updated”. You get serious.
Also, maybe take a shot of whiskey and chill.

It's so weird. Every person I know that has a pair absolutely loves them. Then you come in this thread on an Apple fancentric site and its pages of people talking about all the reasons they are bad.
MacRumors ceased being a fancentric site about 5 years ago. Haters have taken over, both in forum comments and editorial content. Though I've been a MacRumors member for over a decade, I rarely visit this toxic wasteland anymore, prefering positive sites such as 9to5Mac and AppleInsider

What's so good about them?
-Stupid easy pairing and switching across different devices.
-Stay connected extremely well.
-Very comfortable, to the point where I forget they are in my ears.
-No wire at all.
I would add the pocketability of the Airpods case to your list.

Easily Apple's best product since the iPhone.

How about color options. Space Grey would be awesome. AirPods design is very cheesy, and white color only makes it worse. Looks like earring dangling when you walk around.

Darker color however would help tone it down.

Costs aside, Apple probably doesn't / won't do this for the same reason they don't bundle fast chargers with iPhones. They simply can't make enough of them.

It probably doesn't make sense what I said. Was just thinking aloud before I myself came up with a million reasons why they wouldn't do it.

Curious what improvements we see in gen 2. A wireless charging case isn't enough to interest me and in really hoping they offer something for sports and working out. Without additional tips these things don't stay in for me, and I assume I'm not the only one; I never see them at the gym. We could all just buy third party tips, but then they need to be removed when out away and that just doesn't work well for that kind of usage (tips would be lost fast, for me). Give me a sport version and I'll probably be happy.

Controversial opinion:
Wired headphones are so much better.

You don'y have a mini-DAC feed by a low-bandwidth, low-energy protocol.
Also, you are limited driving the speakers with a small battery.

The 3.5" or 6,3" jack is not obsolete at all.
It's just that marketing wants to push extremely miniaturised products.
You promised a controversial opinion, but then you only state indisputable facts.

Facts are facts, but what changes are the importance of those “benefits” and how applicable they are to your users.

For example, wired Ethernet is undisputedly faster and more stable than WiFi, but for many users, WiFi is still fast and convenient enough for their needs. Ethernet’s main drawback, that you need to be tethered to a desk, is enough of a deterrent to make all its other benefits moot.

Same with wireless. It’s that not wired headphones don’t have benefits, but that different people prize different features differently. And for me (and many others, I believe), the portability and convenience afforded by Airpods more than offsets every other drawback combined.

Not every feature matters, and not every feature matters equally.

Can nonbody see the irony that Apple gives you a pair of earbuds, then turns around and says"no, no, no, these are the ones you want?"

Except that wired is easier for things that usually get lost.
The constant extra care to carry, seek, handle, collect, keep them charged is a nuisance. A dental floss case in addition to a genuine dental floss case doesn’t help either.
Wired buds are so much easier to handle and have far better sound quality with less lag.

Despite all that “extra space used for a better taptic engine” (Ph. D. Schiller)
Duh - who has ever complained about the former taptic engine vs. how many loose their buds

I have headphones from Bose, Sennheiser, BeatsX and a pair of Master&Dynamics. Don't know why I should get the blowdryers for smurfs.

I get while some people like the AirPods, but I also know three individuals who've lost one ear bud too.

Personally I tried a pair for a short while and simply didn't get on with them. They leaked too much sound and of course didn't offer any noise cancelling so meant I had to play music louder which in turn is bad for my already bad hearing.

I'll stick with either in-ear earphones or a top end quality pair of headphones. I just wish my PX's offers Qi charging. That would be brilliant! (And they continued without charge which has only caught me out once, but very frustrating).

In the two years I have owned my Airpods, I have never felt that I was anywhere close to losing them.

The case makes it extremely easy to put away my Airpods when I am done with them, and it is small enough to fit in my front shirt pocket (at work) or my jeans pocket (when I am outside). I don’t floss, so maybe that’s that.

Not to mention that Airpods also work great with my Apple Watch and Apple TV, which aren’t really compatible with wired headphones.

Compared with the EarPods which was (comparatively) a hassle to untangle and coil.

Battery life is a legitimate concern, but I just charge them overnight alongside my other devices every couple of days and I find I am rarely in a situation where my Airpods are high and dry.

Sound quality is another compromise. I guess you can’t win them all.

If people are buying them they don’t care to improve.

This is a poor sighted assumption and would be a poor business practice by Apple. Do the AirPods really need to be updated annually? It’s an accessory to the iPhone. It’s a first Gen product, we have no idea what Apple has in store for the second Gen AirPods, which could be a reason why they might be taking longer to release, but I think it’s fairly evident the AirPods are a massive success, and a ‘release date’ will have not affect with the success of the AirPods either way.

I guess sound improvement will be part of the next gen air pods. They are great but sound wise there are better options out there but for me the sound is perfectly good for what’s needed that’s for sure.

Any other early adoptors of the original airpods in the same predicament as me? Where the battery health has diminished to the extent of needing a new pair.
Seems pointless to buy some more now.. but waiting until 2020? Eesh!

Real curious what a new design would look like. Doesn't feel like a lot of room to mess with the current model. Looking forward to something innovative. Come on Apple, blow my ear away. ;-)

I would imagine the stalks on the buds will be a little shorter. There will probably be some sort of health sensor in the buds too. I would guess that they'll also be available in the usual, rose gold, gold, space grey colours to match whatever iPhones are out at the time.

Will the wirelessly charging case also be able to charge via a lightning or usb-c cable? I travel a lot, and don’t want to have to carry around a charging pad with me.
Interesting, will Apple use this as an opportunity to remove a jack, after all, why keep a useless jack around if you can go fully wireless.:D

Really wish they didn't leak sound as much as they do...
That's pretty much why I won't buy them, I like listening to my music at loud volumes and I don't like people hearing what I'm listening to

Whats so good about them?

Convenience. Pop them in, instant sound, no fuss, no cables. If you don't own a pair you won't be able to understand this point unless you own buds like these that have no cables of any kind.

As mentioned, they leak sound [...]

They do leak sound yes, there is not a good seal at all. Which makes them perfect for running and doing work in my office and generally any place where I want to be fully aware of my surroundings while listening to my music. Simple as that, for me they are perfect.

[...] and are uncomfortable.

For my ears they fit nicely and do not cause me any discomfort. I often wear them for several hours per session without any issues.

i have a pair of wireless Sol Republic that come with 3 differen't sized silicon earpieces, that sit comfortably & snug. The Apple earpods are way overpriced for what you get and in fact the sound on the Sol Republics is also much better.

They are hard plastic and so they will not fit everyone, I usually tell people who ask me about them to try Earpods first since most people have a pair of those already and if they fit, the Airpods will fit.

I will never get the obsession with 2 stupid looking white eardrops,..they even look ridiculous when I see people wear them. Knowing there is a new one early 2020, why would you even bother getting the 2019 model??

It seems to me that you place a lot of emphasis on appearance. Me personally I do not think that the Airpods look great due to the stem. However functionally they are to me quite perfect and I am more than happy to use a product that works perfectly even if they appear a little odd.

As for why someone would buy the 2016 (current) or 2019 (rumoured) models when a redesigned version is coming in 2020: You don't always need to have the latest thing. Marketing is indoctrinating people into believing they always must buy the latest and greatest iteration of everything, don't feed into that. If a product does what you want don't be fooled into paying more for a newer version that has a minor new feature.

For me I bought two of the 2016 model because I used my first pair for two years every single day for hours and the batteries wore down to where I was only getting a few minutes play time out of them. I purchased a new pair because for me they are that important to me. If these last two years I'd be happy with that and I'll likely buy whatever version is out at that time.

Besides what I wrote here about your specific points I just wanted to reach out to you on a personal level and say that, don't let yourself get so carried away with what other people like and enjoy. Life is really too short to get so worked up about someone else liking a product that you don't like. Specifically saying things like "I will never get the obsession with 2 stupid looking white eardrops" in a discussion about simple headphones really can't be good for your well-being, take a moment and reflect as I often do in these kinds of discussions.
