there's more infrared light in sunlight than visible light.

No Thanx! I will NEVER buy a Face-ID device.
Don't shoe-horn things into consumers faces that they've never asked for and don't take away things they care deeply about. Enjoy the free-slide in sales. It may not be immediate, but it will be profound.

I'll bet you never asked for Touch ID. Par for the course.

So how does Apple Pay work then, with FaceID? Maybe they showed it at the dog-and-pony show last month, but I didn't see the whole keynote.

So I put my phone near the terminal, choose my card and then what? Bend over, awkwardly, trying to get my face in view of the camera? Surely there is a different way?

Faceid doesn't solve any problems for the user. Apple will surely get it to work eventually but it will not be a big selling point over systems based on fingerprint recognition.

It allows for a (nearly) edge-to-edge display without compromising security or convenience. That means the user gets a larger screen in a smaller package with no drawbacks.

Samsung's non-solution was to stick the fingerprint reader on the back *right by the lens*, truly one of the dumbest tech decisions I've seen in a while.

Haha, I was about to reply to him too. I don't think some people realize just by being out in the sun out and about is potentially more harmful than the light or low radiation emitted from the phone.

You look at it first, then put the phone down to the terminal and tap the side button twice.

I'll bet Apple truly believe that face ID is a step forward from Touch ID. If so, that could conceivably be the case. I look forward to the public opinions this time next year. I'll bet we'll have masses of people pledging their allegiance to Face ID.

Other then Apple letting the marketing team to keep that fugly notch.

Ok.... how do I make this simpler. By the time I’m ready to look at the phone, it’s already unlocked and at the home screen.
Right, but seeing you have to look at it anyway you're probably saving yourself a millisecond.

EDIT: Yeah, I guess seeing that you still have to swipe up with FaceID pulling it out of your pocket while unlocking would be faster.

If you believe Apple and people that have described using FaceID then you can swipe to unlock right away. There’s no waiting for it to unlock then swiping. It’s just one fluid action. Look at the phone and at the same time you are swiping to get in. We will see if that’s true once it comes out.

I’m a she not a he and I edited my post to explain why I had to stop using Ir emitters for biometric identification. Short answer: severe lingering pain and I don’t know why. Now my husband is in the first stages of developing the same complication.

I don’t understand how you could confuse this tbh. Instead of pulling my phone out of my pocket ready to go, I now how to wake the screen up, look at it, let it register, then swipe up to get to my home screen...

I don’t get how people can judge face ID without even trying it. Touch ID was controversial as well and in the early stages and it was actually faster to just type in a 4 digit password. Technology evolve and now it’s lightning quick. However, Apple found a MUCH more secure way to unlock the phone, so they want people to use that instead. Plus, they need to get rid of the chin on the iPhone, so there is simply no space for Touch ID anymore.
