Do you also believe iPhone 5c wasn't intended as a low-cost phone because the press release didn't mention price? Apple thought people wanted plastic instead of aluminum?

Apple Introduces iPhone 5c—The Most Colorful iPhone Yet
All-New Design, Packed with Incredible Features in Five Gorgeous Colors
CUPERTINO, California—September 10, 2013—Apple® today introduced iPhone® 5c, featuring an all-new design, packed with incredible features in five gorgeous colors—blue, green, pink, yellow and white. iPhone 5c is built on a foundation of features people know and love like the beautiful 4-inch Retina® display, blazing fast performance of the A6 chip, and the 8 megapixel iSight® camera—all while delivering great battery life. iPhone 5c comes with more LTE bands than any other smartphone in the world, a new FaceTime® HD camera, and iOS 7, the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone.
“iPhone 5c is everything iPhone 5 was and more, in an all-new design packed with great features,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5c is designed with a beautiful polycarbonate enclosure that looks and feels so solid in your hand.”

Really. See above.

Don't tell me you also think Apple doesn't believe in profits just because none of their marketing literature or keynotes mentions "profits."

Come on.

For what it's worth, I bought the 5c at its launch because I thought it looked nicer than the iPhone 5S.

To this day I'm thinking it's probably my favorite iPhone.

Apple may have "finally" decided to move forward with this simply because of the 15% Tariff that will hit iPhones on Dec 15th !

Apple needs to sell as many 2019 iPhones BEFORE Dec 15th.

Starting on Dec 15th, their profit will be down SIGNIFICANTLY on each sale !

For example, for the iPhone 11 Max Pro I recently purchased, if Apple doesn't change Prices post-Dec 14th, that's a $164.84 hit per sale to Apple's top & bottom line !

That's NOT Trump change ! ... even for the mighty AAPL !

Tim already partially accounted for the tariffs by ripping out the reverse wireless charging and 6GB RAM at the last minute.

That gold 5S was peak mobile phone design

The gold ring on the fingerprint scanner was 110% class

Now Apple puts notches into displays...

I have no idea what you’re on about, sorry. I was responding to the canard that you and others keep repeating that the iPhone SE was “never about size” when it was clearly a huge part of the device’s appeal, and marketed as such.

Apple will never describe SE or any other iPhone as a low-cost iPhone. It's already on price tag. Apple doesn't want to make iPhone SE buyers feel cheap. Or cheapen the Apple brand.

Apple doesn't need to shout, "We sell cheap iPhones" and lower the brand appeal.

iPhone SE was always sold based on price. Just like iPhone 5c. It's implied.

Oh my gosh when will Apple understand that we want a premium iPhone X mini?
Those 'market research' employees at Apple should be fired.

It's astounding that:
  1. Apple still doesn't get why people loved SE.
  2. People here still don't get it as well.
Apple thinks that SE is a phone for those on the budget. A lot of people here probably agree.. What SE fans wanted was a SMALL, premium phone. iPhone 8 form factor is NOT small. That's why we complain. Just go to previous articles and try to find one SE fan saying: man, I wish they did SE in 8 form factor. Nobody EVER said that.
Yep. What other iPhone can I hold over my head with one hand and be able to reach the entire display without dropping the phone? There simply isn’t one. I consider my phone a tool and the SE is the best tool for me.

People completely miss the boat on what the SE was: a cheaper device, primarily marketed towards emerging markets like India and China (mostly India) while adding another price point for an entry level phone. It had nothing to do with size, only cutting costs to produce a cheaper product.

I agree 100% that cost was the only criteria for creating an SE.

Even though Apple released the SE for that reason, I think that people bought the SE in the US primarily for its size.

I think you are giving the people who like the SE very little credit. Everyone understands that the SE 2 is being produced so Apple will have a lower cost phone.

It doesn't mean though that we have to like the rebranded iPhone 8 or stop requesting an SE sized iPhone.

Bought 6S, didn’t like the size, gave to wife when SE came out.
Bought XS, didn’t like the size, gave to wife and went back to an SE.

I don’t want some limited cheap phone. I want a premium small phone that I can use all day single handedly without needing to use reachability (which I found very hard to trigger reliably on the XS), an edge to edge screen, faceID, spanking new SoC etc.

I went from a 5s to a 6s Plus then back to an SE based on the size of the SE.

Being much cheaper than the 6s Plus that I sold ended up being a bonus.
Yep same here, went from 5s, to 6, then 7, hung out waiting for a new small phone the gave up after the 11 event and just bought a brand new SE off fleabay. Was just handy it was cheap. I'd have paid whatever the going rate is for a new one. Even apple tried to keep it sensible with size remember the thumb advert,, I'm sure they will do another small one soon, and some people will have to eat their hat.

Considering the iPhone X form factor is about the same size as iPhone 8, and the SE was sold as a smaller alternative to the 8 form factor, this definitely won't appeal to people who liked the original SE for the size.

And considering the ship has sailed for Apple on low cost phones in India and China (considering there are hundreds of cheap brands with very capable Androids at this point), the low cost doesn't make sense either.

In short I don't know why Apple would release this.

Funny how iPhones are so fast yet have no software to take advantage of it

In the real world Android is much more powerful because of features like multitasking and picture in picture actually using the CPU and RAM, whereas the pathetic iOS interface was outdated 7 years ago and putting an A13 chip in it doesn't let you do anything new.

I’ve not said price wasn’t a consideration for Apple. I was disputing that the size wasn’t an important factor in its design choice, and how it was marketed. They could have sold the iPhone 6 or an identical variant of it for the same price as the SE if low price was the only concern.

Does anyone even make 32GB storage any more? 64GB probably only still exists because of demand from Apple. So Apple will just reuse those parts. Maybe cheaper to use a 64GB chip that's been firmware locked to only use 32GB.

Yes, Apple currently sells the base 2019 iPad with 32GB storage.

If that's right then they won't be selling any additional iphone 8.

Also what I'd love is an upgraded version of 8+ like a SE+ (plus size with A13 and dual camera)

SE fans should rejoice.
Why? What the article describes is as much an iPhone SE as a Trash Can Mac is a Mac Cube, (stylistically, that is,) and I’d almost be willing to bet it won’t have a headphone jack, which for me is an absolute REQUIREMENT.

To me, the article states Apple is planning to release a phone that they not only know is obsolete, but which moreover is too damned big, too big to operate one-handed, too big to fit comfortably in a hip pocket, too thin and weak to resist bending, too big to fit in my existing iPhone SE cases, probably will have those oh-so-hard to hold onto, comfortably round edges, (in cutaway profile,) and are just completely not what I want or need. Why in Jobs’s Holy Name (blessings and slimness be upon him,) would I be happy about THAT, let alone REJOICE?!?

Well said, Apple is on the verge of alienating the customer because of the employees not upholding the gold standard when making a newer model of Apple products.

I WANT A _small_ iPHONE. I DON'T WANT A CHEAP iPHONE.

Without any doubt that the customer wants a bigger screen on a iPhone SE form factor and it makes sense to improve that model with newer technology instead of rehashing from the iPhone 8.

It's not the cost, but the size of the iPhone SE that makes it attractive.
It‘s both - though not necessarily for the same people and demographic.

That’s not what I’m saying and I understand what you want. But Apple isn’t going to make a 4” iPhone to satisfy a minuscule market when emerging markets want big phones.
If they can make an iPad mini, they can make a small iPhone as well.
Theyˋre even making a recently revised (2019) iPod touch - if the market that is satisfying isn’t small, what is?
People completely miss the boat on what the SE was: a cheaper device, primarily marketed towards emerging markets like India and China (mostly India) while adding another price point for an entry level phone. It had nothing to do with size, only cutting costs to produce a cheaper product.
Even if it was, that‘s not the only reason people liked it.
