They’d have to engineer a totally new case, and go with FaceID, so it would be expensive. The notch would look huge on such a small screen. It would a really cool product, but an expensive niche one. They more immediately need to offer a smaller more affordable product in their lineup.

The notch can be removed and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor can be used for the SE. It won't be costly to develop since the chassis is not as big as iPhone 11.

The iPhone SE launched six months after the iPhone 6S and shared its internal hardware.

The 6S was the flagship phone at the time.

Tell me again why "Small and Premium" is stupid when Apple has done it once before?

Because SE didn't gain any traction in key emerging markets.

iPhone SE used first-gen Touch ID and the same modem as iPhone 6. It lacked 3D Touch. It was clearly built with cost in mind rather than a premium smartphone.

I love the design of the SE. The bezel size does make it look outdated. Give me edge to edge screen, head phone jack and a better camera and I’ll gladly upgrade from my iPhone 7.

The majority of people think that's a good idea.

Funny that Apples budget iPhone (if they make this new SE) will still be more powerful than every single Android device on the planet.

It was the size of the SE that made it popular.

Some changes in the iPhone 8 and rebranding it to the SE2 doesn't excite me.

Give me a smaller phone then the SE2 with no screen bezels and I'll be excited :).
It was marketed by Apple as a low cost phone but I believe that most of the demand was fueled by its small size.

People completely miss the boat on what the SE was: a cheaper device, primarily marketed towards emerging markets like India and China (mostly India) while adding another price point for an entry level phone. It had nothing to do with size, only cutting costs to produce a cheaper product.

Hopefully it's smaller than the iPhone 8. Otherwise this will just be a cheaper iPhone 8.

Curious of the starting price point. iPhone 8 is already pretty low at $449. So it's either $349 or $399.

I have normal sized hands, and prefer the smaller sized phones....

Interesting...

What is your obsession with hand size????

This is just a few of many posts (there are many pages of results) mentioning hand size and/or accusing people of having baby-sized hands:

Is this kind of like when you see people with a lifted truck with huge sack trailing behind? Most likely someone compensating for something tiny on them.....

That's clearly what it is. Good job. You nailed it. Or so you think. But thanks for obsessing over my junk. Feels great.

Yay! Hope they make it with an aluminium back. Screw having glass back for the product segment where people are expected to keep their phone for 4+ years. You’re just going to break it. Wireless charging be damned.

Regardless, fifteen times more attractive option than the XR. Sleeker, more powerful and no pretense about being bezel-less while actually having pretty big bezels. Touch ID is a plus also.

Isn't that too big to be considered an SE? Seems like they are just recycling leftover inventory.
Thats exactly what they were doing with the original SE....

Can i recommend an iPhone 7?

Apple Introduces iPhone SE — The Most Powerful Phone with a Four-inch Display

Featuring A9 Chip, Advanced 12-Megapixel iSight Camera & Apple Pay
CUPERTINO, California — March 21, 2016 — Apple® today introduced iPhone® SE, the most powerful phone with a four-inch display, in a beloved compact aluminum design that has been updated with matte-chamfered edges, a color-matched stainless steel Apple logo, and four gorgeous metallic finishes, including rose gold. iPhone SE offers exceptional performance with the same 64-bit A9 chip offered in iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus for blazing fast speeds, longer battery life, faster wireless, a 12-megapixel iSight® camera featuring Live Photos™ and 4K video, and Touch ID® with Apple Pay®.
“iPhone SE is an exciting new idea — we started with a beloved, iconic design and reinvented it from the inside out. The result is the most beautiful and powerful phone with a four-inch display in the world,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone SE is packed with a stunning four-inch Retina display, advanced 64-bit A9 chip with M9 motion co-processor, longer battery life, 12-megapixel iSight camera with True Tone flash, Live Photos, 4K video, faster LTE and Wi-Fi, and Touch ID with Apple Pay. Everyone who wants a smaller phone is going to love iPhone SE.”[1]

Sorry if the 4.7” phone screen is too big for some. This phone could still appeal to many people that are opposed to a phone without a home button, but still want the latest tech. At this point, the iPhone 8 has an A11 with 2 GB RAM, so it’s actually not the best choice for someone wanting the latest tech. I prefer not having a home button, so I’m happy to be on the XR, but I see the mass appeal of this update.

„still too big!“

you would think but people opting for the SE found the 4.7 one too big in the first place

Coming from an iPhone 4 to the iPhone 8, physically it didn't seem that big of a difference when I held it, and that difference went away once it became my daily driver. Same with my iPhone 8 Plus, looks big at first, but eventually you, at least I did, will get accustomed to whatever size phone you have access to. Even the iPhone 11 Pro Max, physically is very similar to the size of the 8 Plus. What makes it looks bigger overall is minimizing of the bezel, replacing the bezel with more screen real estate.

The SE2 will be the new bottom tier iPhone for those who want smaller phones. Your basic no thrills iPhone for the masses, including seniors like my parents. Apple has the whole spectrum covered when it comes to their bread and butter iPhones and iPads.

SE was always sold from a price perspective, not size.

Really?

Apple may have "finally" decided to move forward with this simply because of the 15% Tariff that will hit iPhones on Dec 15th !

Apple needs to sell as many 2019 iPhones BEFORE Dec 15th.

Starting on Dec 15th, their profit will be down SIGNIFICANTLY on each sale !

For example, for the iPhone 11 Max Pro I recently purchased, if Apple doesn't change Prices post-Dec 14th, that's a $164.84 hit per sale to Apple's top & bottom line !

That's NOT Trump change ! ... even for the mighty AAPL !

It's the same issue in the States with people looking for a car with a standard transmission. If it's offered at all, it is almost always only an option in the Spartan Special trim. "Yeah, you can have a manual, but you can't have that and CarPlay, or a backup camera, or seat belts." Oh. Cool. Thanks.

At least Apple sort of gets at this by making the smallest form factor iPhone one of the Pro's. I for one am excited to get my hands on mine and ditch the behemoth Xs Max I have been regretting for the last year without having to give up the Pro feature set.

Pretty good analogy -- I like to drive standard transmission cars as well.

Do you also believe iPhone 5c wasn't intended as a low-cost phone because the press release didn't mention price? Apple thought people wanted plastic instead of aluminum?

Really. See above.

Don't tell me you also think Apple doesn't believe in profits just because none of their marketing literature or keynotes mentions "profits."

Come on.

I have no idea what you’re on about, sorry. I was responding to the canard that you and others keep repeating that the iPhone SE was “never about size” when it was clearly a huge part of the device’s appeal, and marketed as such.

Watch this phone preorder sell out in minutes. This will be my next phone, I don’t need a larger display phone like I used to, anything for more of a viewing experience, I can resort to my iPads and laptop.

Plus, if this rumor proves to be true that it will incorporate the A13, that’s pretty exciting given it will have the latest processor/with 3 GB of Ram.
The A13, pushing a lower res 4.7” display with 3GB of RAM, wireless charging, and likely a single lens from the iPhone 11 is going to be awesome. Would be cool if they released colors exclusive to the SE2 to differentiate. I would actually consider picking one up.
