SE was a hit because of it's small form factor.

So what? That (debatable point) doesn’t refute what I said. You said that this can’t be the SE because it’s too big? You know SE stands for “special edition” and not “small edition” right? They could make a 7” iPhone SE. That’s my point. I’m sorry if you don’t like/want an iPhone 8 sized iPhone SE, but Apple can make whatever they want. Yes, size was one (potentially very important, especially here at MR) aspect of the original SE, but when looked at more objectively it’s pretty clear that from Apple’s perspective the SE was simply an old frame at a lower price.

As usual the small phone brigade are complaining completely forgetting that a flagship 5.4 device is launching next year.

still might be too large for some, but I'd probably be content especially if the full screen is 16:9.

I'm not sure if we have the rumored or confirmed 5.4" chassis size, but the iphone 6-8 chassis specs are just about right for the potential 5.4" screen.

Height: (13.83 cm) 5.44 inches
Width: (6.71 cm) 2.64 inches

I have an iPhone 8, and while I too think it is slightly too big for my taste, I will likely upgrade to this because it will be the smallest iPhone Apple makes and it being cheap also doesn't hurt.

Personally I'd really love a 4.8-5.1" edge to edge iPhone 11 style phone, but that doesn't seem like it will happen.

Many people don't feel cheap by opting for a smaller iPhone and it makes sense to produce one with roughly an iPhone 8 screen size without the bezel.

Then why did they keep the 8? The lineup will make little sense. They should’ve discontinued the XR as well since the regular 11 is much better and just a bit more expensive.

Apple plans to release a lower-priced "iPhone SE 2" in the first quarter of 2020, according to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a research note with TF International Securities, obtained by MacRumors, Kuo said the device will feature a similar form factor design and specifications as the iPhone 8, with a faster A13 chip and 3GB of RAM:Kuo believes the "iPhone SE 2" will be the "best upgrade choice" for an estimated 100 million remaining iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users, serving as a "key growth driver" for Apple in 2020. He believes these customers have low desire for new features like Face ID and multiple cameras, suggesting the "iPhone SE 2" will stick with Touch ID and a single-lens rear camera.

Kuo's prediction lines up with multiple other sources that have claimed Apple plans to release a new lower-cost iPhone 8-esque device next year, including the Taiwanese publication Economic Daily News, Japanese publication Nikkei Asian Review, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and Debby Wu.

Those earlier reports indicated the device will sport a 4.7-inch display and a Touch ID home button like the iPhone 8. Apple continues to sell the iPhone 8 from $449, while the iPhone SE was $349 prior to being discontinued. When new, the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE started at $399 and $699 respectively.

Apple giving people what they want with this phone, yet so many will still complain 🤦‍♂️

It's kind of ironic that apple has consistently trended toward smaller, thinner computers as users are clamoring for better performance, thermal design, and modularity. On phones, though, they are trending larger and larger for a device that by necessity must be very portable.
The thinness / lightness obsession resulted in the iPhone 6 Plus "bendgate" issues and the Butterfly keyboard issues on the MacBook / MacBook Pro. Now Apple is finally changing course with the Mac as the discontinuation of the MacBook shows, and we should be seeing some larger-screen MacBook Pros soon.

No!!! if they're going to release a 'smaller' 'budget' phone then make it the same size as the 5/SE was! The iPhone 8 is already almost as big as the 11Pro which for many ppl is still larger than desired.

Someone needs to have a sitdown with Tim Apple and tell him it's not the price, it's the size.

If Apple released the iPhone 11 Pro in a size that matched the physical dimensions of the iPhone SE I'd buy one this instant even at $999.

It's always been about the size for me and nothing else.

No. This would be giving some iPhone 8 fans what they might want. Honestly if ‘SE’ hadn’t been mentioned there probably wouldn’t be so many complaints here already. A low-cost notch-free iPhone is certainly sellable.

But this would not be much of a replacement for the SE for many of us, IMHO.

The XR isn't all that great and makes no sense to sell it along the iPhone 11.

If you look at the market, very few people want small phones. In both emerging and developed countries, big sells. Now that Apple has media streaming services, their lineup needs to be all big phones. To be honest 4.7” is still very small from a 2020 perspective.
Of course big sells, because only they only produce big! I do not care about your 2020 perspective. I have an ipad (which would be somewhat useless having a big phone) and apple tv. I'll watch streams there, not on a phone, any size. Period.

That valuable survey data is what phone manufacturers pay tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for.

Actions speak louder than words. Either every single smartphone manufacturer in the world including Apple is wrong and there’s a huge untapped demand for small phones. Or they’re right that’s why nobody makes small phones in 2019.

Or that 'valuable data' points out that most people don't care what the size is. That they can fit more tech into larger sized phones vs smaller. That smaller phones are more difficult to sell certain media services on because who stares at a small 3 inch screen all day playing Apple Arcade?

On another note, I think doing an SE of the 8 form factor when they have a new 5.4 inch flagship phone coming out in September a bit silly.

Because the 8 is using a 2 generation old CPU / camera setup. And the new one will presumably use the current A13 and base camera - just like the SE did at its time. This is a much better phone. They should go to 4GB on the memory but whatever.

But the SE was the cheapest model, some people bought it because of the size but many for budget. How are they going to price this new SE? More expensive than the 8? Nobody's going to buy it. Cheaper? Great, but what's the point in keeping the 8?

He said "sold". And not "purchased". The implication here is that Apple's goal here was to hit a price point. Buyers, such as yourself, may have found others bonuses, such as size. Nobody is really contesting that. What we are saying is that the size wasn't the main factor in Apple's design and launch of the product.

Well, that's just speculation in regards to whether or not the original SE form factor was driven solely by price point as opposed to size or a combination of price point / size.

But even if what you're saying is 100% correct there are two problems with it in regards to an SE 2 based on a larger form factor (iPhone 8):

1) Once released it became clear that size was clearly a factor for many purchasers that was as important or more important than price and Apple's singular and repeated failure to acknowledge this remains mind boggling to me and;

2) Using your own theory a new SE should retain the 4 in form factor because the smaller size should be cheaper than using a larger chassis / screen etc if the goal is to hit a certain price point again and maintain Apples's regular margins.

So, a larger SE makes little sense when last year's X, which is roughly the same size as a larger SE, is now selling at a significantly lower price.

I'll take an SE in the form factor of the 8. I want that CPU performance for AR development, and I'm happy to carry around a cheaper phone (especially one with a fingerprint reader!)

A new SE in the small form factor would be great, but I'll settle for the shell of the iPhone 8. But dang do I love the sandwich of glass, lie-flat form factor of the 4/4S/5/SE
