The LCD screens in Apple devices are known for good color reproduction, especially the newer ones with support for the P3 color gamut. But for day-to-day use, increasing the PPI is usually what makes the biggest noticeable difference in display quality, though obviously there is some variation depending on the person.

In my opinion, no smartphone with 326 PPI in 2018 can be called premium, period. Price it at $649, and it gets much harder to argue about the PPI, lack of 3D Touch, or lack of dual-cameras.
Your simply wrong about the importance of ppi. iPad Pro only has 264ppi—much lower than the XR—and you don’t see complaints about pixel density on that device. You’re fixated on a spec that very few care about.

If you want a higher ppi, buy the 8 or the XS. You aren’t going to get a $649 XR until next September. It’s $749, and it’s going to sell massively at that price.

Nobody could know by now. They said the same for iPhone X and instead it was a great success. I’m ordering an Xs soon :)

The Xs is the same price as the x which sold pretty well.
Unlike the XS Max which is even more expensive and the one almost everyone is upgrading to or buying, in fact $999 is already expensive and not everyone's going to drop such amount of money on a phone.

Maybe folks voting with their wallet will get Apple to bring the prices back down to somewhat reasonable prices. When your phone cost more than a MacBook Air and on par with a MacBook Pro, you are getting greedy.

Complete rubbish. Yes, phones are getting more expensive and maybe they shouldn’t be, but comparing phones to MacBooks is silly. I’d wager that most people use their phone more than their computer. Yet it’s supposed to be cheaper? Why? Newsflash! Your phone IS a computer. It’s not meant to be replaced every year. I think prices are getting high as well, but this will probably lead to more people keeping phones longer, which is a good thing. Upgrading every year is flat out ridiculous, not to mention terrible for the environment. When viewed as a three year purchase, the phone prices are reasonable.

The XS is in kind of a weird spot. XR and XS Max are going to be the go-to iPhones.

Too bad they aren’t all releasing at the same time.

It's no accident either. Don't buy the Apple BS about the LCD Backlight Issues. They could have been ready by 9-14-18. If the XR went on sale the same day you would have seen current Xs 5.8" sales halved from what they are. Xs Max sales are strong, but by Q3 2019 you'll see XR sales account for 62-68% of sales. It will be interesting to watch Apple manage supply and demand for the XR. I have my own opinions on how it will go , but I'm waiting to see.
The XR should have started at $699 with 64gb. :apple:

I think they have jumped the shark on pricing. They have assumed because people like myself bought the X that they will be able to keep selling phones at that price, but they will see diminishing returns on that gamble.

I like many on this site replaced my iPhone every single year and sold my old phone back to Gazelle. When the X was announced, I was very much under the understanding it was a lower volume product because they didn’t have great supplies on the OLED screen and that I was paying to be bleeding edge, and the changes where the future of the iPhone. I very much expected the price of the follow up model to be lower... if they continue selling phones at the $1000-1200 range, my replacement cycle is going to drop from annual to maybe once every 3 years. It’s not like I even really use the gaming or AR features, or expect to use the machine learning capabilities. I stick the the basic apps for financial, web browsing, online stores/local companies, and streaming video. I’m not impressed by larger screens, don’t care about faster games, etc. I just want good battery life, a quality screen, and faster data speeds. I feel like for the most part, the people who can now afford it generally have the features they need and don’t need to upgrade, where as younger people who are more likely to be “high end” gaming or using AR will be less likely to afford it. So who is buying phones at $1200? And more importantly, how many reliable annual upgrader will stick to upgrading annually?

Smartphone are held at a closer viewing distance, hence a higher PPI does make more of a difference in day-to-day usage than it would on an iPad.

326 PPI has not been premium for at least four years. At $749, I'd expect better.

The guts otherwise are the same as the Xs series (removal of force touch is a feature IMHO). In day to day use only folks who read specs will really notice the difference in the screen, and like the notch that too wont matter after a day or two.

It has most of what customers want. There are some exclusives that will bring customers to the XS line no doubt; the 6.5” screen, largest screen of the Max, dual cameras and OLED screens, 512GB and even the gold color options are obvious draws. Also, those that don’t have a problem spending an extra $10-20 a month to have the best.

I paid mine in full. Have just $120 or so left on the current Next plan, will pay that off when my daughter and I switch phones.

Let’s be realistic though, the next couple iterations of the iPhone won’t be dramatically different either.

The iPhone X was like the iPhone 2007, only extremely way better.

Comparing older versions with newer versions, I am expecting an even slower pace of innovation going forward because so much of the necessary low hanging fruits have been picked. Beyond 5G, the usual faster A series and maybe an even better display, what else is there? I was gung ho about the iPhone X partly due to the near all screen design and this obsesssion with Super Retina. But when I compare my 6s with my X, I cannot for the life of me see what is so spectacularly different between the two.

When I compared my brothers iPhone 4 back in 2010 with my iPod Touch (2008) screen, I saw a dramatic difference.

Now, going back to the comparisons:

iPhone X > iPhone 2007
iPhone Xs > iPhone 3G
iPhone 2019 > iPhone 3GS
iPhone 2020 > iPhone 4
iPhone 2021 > iPhone 4s

See the trend here?

Which likely means, we probably won’t see any slightly significant change in the iPhone’s design until 2022, similar to the 2012 iPhone 5.

The issue is, what exactly will a 2022 iPhone even need to do to stand out? I can maybe see Apple bumping the 5.8 to 6.1 and the 6.5 to 6.7. Then what?

I don’t see the iPhone going 128 bit soc a year after, because 64 bit has so much memory leg room already.

iPhone’s will still sell, because people will need new phones and will have a personal preference for the platform. But, the Apple Watch likely need to step up to the plate by then; and Apple will need to have delivered a new category by then. I do hope they indeed deliver something remarkable in eyewear computing. The key is to make that significantly natural. Wearing glasses throughout the day will need to feel transparent and cool at the same time. It can’t be as cool as wearing your RayBans, because that will come across awkward in some environments.

It will need to have some utilitarian purpose. Of course, the next ultimate, will be the Car.

But, one industry I think Apple should show a lot more keen interest in is the medical field. Not just geared towards hospitabl environments, but devices and services geared to actual health/quality of life. It’s the only area for growth.

When I take into account cancer took the founders life, Apple should be spending 10 billion each year on research to tackle that as an ultimate tribute to its legacy and purpose in the world.

Im surprised you still ever bothered upgrading every year. The phones since the 6 werent big jumps anymore yearly

Can the human eye detect higher than 326PPI?

If you LOOK for a difference youll find it. On a daily basis most folks would not notice it

Even iPhone xs max is showing a lacklustre performance on pre orders

have you ever seen a Apple flagship lagging so much that you will definitely get a piece on launch day. I bet you walk to most stores uou will get. Apple may do reverse engineering of inventory to reflect demands but it is not there. People who don’t care for $1000 or absolute fanboys with a obession to keep most advanced models will upgrade from iPhone x. Else it doesn’t make a point. People with 2 year old phones will upgrade.

But i am really surprised with Tim leadership skills, he is acting like a money sucking lice..... iPhone 6S had a 10W charging brick but with $1099 price tag Apple supplies us a innovative futuristic awesome 5W charger. No headphone dongle now with iPhone. Will he eat all this dollars. Steve would have never done that..... supplying a 5 w charger with fast charging enabled phone

I am sure they want to sell more phones with the watches; but with the price of the watches getting so high now, they are probably making as much on them as they were from the phones a few years ago when they were cheaper. So they want to sell a lot more watches. When they make them compatible with Android, they will sell even more.

They won’t make them compatible. Looking at the direction they took with HomePod it’s not hard to see what their direction is.

The XS for me is the perfect hand held size. I've had Galaxy Notes and currently also a Pixel 2 XL as a daily driver, and can handle those phones just fine, but the X and XS are in that great sweet spot for size and screen.
With the screen to body ratio as it is, and, the fact now that the Max does not have any features the XS does, I think the XS will be a nice upgrade for those coming from a regular size 6 or 7 without being too large.

I tried an X early this year and now have the opportunity to get a new phone through work, so XS it will be.

Our family is getting a couple Xr’s and an Xs. I wear polarized glasses nearly everyday. Switching to OLED will also allow me to see the screen much better than LCD. I’m looking forward to switching from the 8 plus to the Xs this Friday.

I don’t care what sells more or less. I like the options Apple is starting to offer. Hopefully better and more are in the future. There is no one phone that will suit everyone’s wants and needs. Sure some have better specs but we all have different budgets and use cases. It’s what fits your situation. Let the analysts do their thing. Who cares.

I never though I would say this either but I love the size of the iPhone X.

All summer long I was dead set on upgrading to the bigger model.

After the keynote I was even more satisfied with my iPhone X than ever before.

Loved the plus sized phones but extremely content with my current X.

Just FYI, no iPhone ever came with a 10w charging brick, its been 5w since the first one.

Me too. Coming from an 8 Plus I thought for sure I’d need a Max. But going into the store and seeing the regular X changed my mind. The screen and battery are very close and yet the phone and weight are a bit less which is perfect for me. I can handle plus sizes easily but I like the idea of having a smaller device without sacrificing much screen or battery.
