This kind of reminds me of Tesla FSD which isn't really FSD and people that paid $12k for it early didn't have the hardware for even the current version of "FSD" to work. The current version - still not FSD - is much better, but sooner or later they need to make it a feature of Teslas and give something to the people that paid as an apology.

I really only got the 16 as a necessary upgrade from my 11. I'd already tried and been underwhelmed by Apple Intelligence on my iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. I don’t mind waiting for this personal context/ app intents vapourware. What I do mind is a disconcerting comment I saw on MacRumours: what if those advanced Siri features demand more RAM than my current devices have? If I'm told my 16 can't run personal context, I will be miffed. Will probably just buy the 21 air at that point.

Anyone who feels betrayed by a failure to deliver AI is an enemy of humankind.
I hate AIs which steal from human artists. Proponents of those AIs are enemies of humanity for sure. The delayed Apple Intelligence features are not at all problematic in that regard.

Artists need not worry about image playgrounds putting them out of a job. I've seen better art from elementary school children

It’s not the failure per se, it’s the principle.

There’s been a litany of delays, bugs, and general disappointment and this latest has served to expose and highlight just how asleep at the wheel Apple has been in the last few years. This isn’t a rare one-off.

I agree, but I don’t put it past Apple to incorporate better MIDjourney-level slop generators into iOS in the future.

Apple made a major misstep with the way that it handled the delay of Apple Intelligence features for Siri, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today. Announcing the delay through a press statement was a bad decision, and Apple should instead have gone through official channels.

Sad-Siri-Feature.jpg

Kuo referenced the well-known "Antennagate" PR crisis when the iPhone 4 launched in 2010, and the way that then Apple CEO Steve Jobs handled it. Jobs personally responded to multiple customer emails, and then Apple held a press conference to address concerns about the iPhone 4's cellular signal. Jobs ended up announcing that Apple would provide free bumpers for all iPhone 4 uses to mitigate the issue, and allow customers who were still unhappy to return their iPhones.

The implication in Kuo's statement is that Apple CEO Tim Cook and other executives should follow Jobs' example, giving customers more insight into what's going wrong with Siri development.

Kuo acknowledges that it takes time to develop artificial intelligence services, and that Apple's early announcement of Apple Intelligence Siri features at WWDC 2024 is understandable "given the pressure from the board and shareholders." With the company unable to deliver the feature set in the promised timeline, Apple needs to provide a more concrete response.

In the midst of Antennagate, Jobs was transparent about Apple's position and offered a concrete solution. Jobs said that Apple did not "fully understand if there were problems" when the iPhone 4 first came out, but that the company had a responsibility to educate as a "leader in the smartphone world." "We're not perfect, and we're working our asses off," Jobs said.

Back in 2012, Cook did personally address Apple Maps shortcomings in iOS 6, penning an apology letter to customers. He told customers that he was sorry, and he provided insight into Apple's work to make the Maps app better. Given the uproar over the delayed Siri overhaul, it could make sense for Cook to again speak to customers directly.

“YOUR HOLDING IT WRONG”!

No apology for me needed. I got my free upgrade to 16gb on my new M4 Macs.
The EULA states they get to turn on AI after each point update because they deigned to give you more RAM meant to run it. Plus you've agreed to donate a portion of your hard drive for its final resting place each time you turn it back off. No you can't reclaim it lol

Nobody liked Forstall. He was an abrasive character by all accounts. Jony Ive in particular couldn’t work with him. The Apple Maps debacle was eventually wrapped around his neck, giving Cook the excuse to fire him.
By all accounts I've read it was the opposite, he was well-liked and grounded while folks like Ive were up in the clouds high off galaxy gas. Here is a recent recap and I believe a link to a podcast that's in depth on that. I think his honesty and demeanor were at odds with Cook and he was competent so Maps was pretense to kick him out. I think Cook was jealous reading between the lines over the years.

If you thought Apple would have AI fully developed before iOS 19, well, that’s on you. AI is constantly evolving, and Apple is lagging behind. Those of us who are interested in AI aren’t focused on Apple and have a subscription to ChatGPT. I was experimenting with Live Chat in ChatGPT, and it’s mind-blowing. Apple won’t have that until iOS 20. Tim Cook, no need to apologize.

For everyone saying consumers don’t care about AI/Apple Intelligence…go to apple.com right now. Every new product featured on Apple’s homepage includes the tagline “built for Apple Intelligence”. So whether consumers really care or not Apple is clearly marketing it. So it does matter if it’s good or not. And right now it’s not great.

The internet has a short memory. In a couple of weeks no one will care about this.

And Tim Cook shouldn’t apologize, Craig Federighi should. Software is his domain.
Except Craig isn’t in charge of AI at Apple. And according to Mark Gurman he raised serious concerns about this stuff not working.

The 1st point is 100% wrong.

Jony Ive's design decisions, post-Steve Jobs, did more damage to Apple's products than Forstall's software decisions. Tim Cook fired the wrong guy.

Apple made it very clear that not all features were present with the iPhone 16 Pro and you still bought. The is not Apple's fault. You made assumptions even though Apple stated differently.
This ad ran last year. There is a fine print disclaimer but no one watching this ad would know what was shown in it wasn’t going to ship. And why would anyone expect an iPhone ad to show off a feature that isn’t publicly available? Incidentally I thought all of the iPhone 16 ads featuring that song ‘Genius’ were really tone deaf. Especially the one where the wife forgets it’s her husband’s birthday and quickly has Apple Intelligence create a memory movie from the photos app. And the end of the ad has her walking away like a boss with the ‘Genius’ song playing in the background. So bad.

"We can't figure out how to remove a notch..."

Tim: Just name it "Dynamic Island".

We can't figure out AI.

Tim: Just name it "Apple Intelligence"

-anything else...?
“We can’t figure out how to make a low-cost iPhone.”

Tim: Just name it “e” for “expensive”. Also remove MagSafe because why not.

“We can’t figure out how to make a really thin iPhone, even at 6.9”.”

Tim: Just slap a thick bar on it, the body will probably appear thin-ish in comparison.

“We can’t figure out how to make a VR headset that people will enjoy wearing and want to afford.”

Tim: It’s fine as long as I can watch Ted Lasso on it.

“We can’t figure out how to update the AirPods Max.”

Tim: How about some new colors? Oh, and make the HomePod mini Space Gray less dark and relaunch that as Midnight.
