For better or worse Kuo's predictions and analysis have prevented to be quite accurate. He was the first person to suggest the iPhone X would eliminate touch id

True, Kuo is one of the more astute analysts covering Apple. But that does not explain his preposterous conjecture that Apple might have released a technology to great fanfare that might not really work.

Makes sense Apple is betting on Face ID.

Not only is in-display Touch ID technically challenging, it adds cost.

iPhone X is like a tech demo. Not only are we getting 6.4" next year, but probably Face ID 2.0 as well.

Steve would have moved heaven and earth to make sure that Touch ID below display panel was implemented in iPhone X. That would have been more of a wow factor.

The 'problem' with Face ID is that it's automatic. You don't have the ability to "bail out" of an authentication process. You will automatically authenticate whether you want to or not.

With Touch ID, you're ALWAYS presented with an option to choose to use it or not. It's never automatic.

Seems to me, automatic authentication via face scanning with no user ability to opt out (if Face ID is enabled) could be abused some way by nefarious operators into duping a user into making a choice they rather would not.

Time will tell.

always? how do you opt out of waking the phone with the home button without unlocking it?

No offense but I could have written that report myself.

In general, Apple doesn’t really listen to customer. Apple’s design choices are rather definitive, regardless of consumers’ opinion. Remember Ford’s quote about horses and car that Jobs used himself.

Of course.

But in this case... it's not a very tough prediction.

"If 2017 feature does well... it will likely be in all 2018 iPhones..."

That's some Nostradamus stuff right there... ;)

It's his way of saying, Apple hasn't bet the farm yet.

By now, the A12 has taped out and most investors are expecting design on the iPhone 11 to be progressing smoothly.

100% wild guess here - but I think they will eventually have both. Touch ID under glass and Face ID. And I think both will simultaneously be used for authentication and unlocking the device. Essentially more security.
And there will be also a blood test for DNA authentication for even more security.

I could see myself tolerating face ID if given no other biometric option, but I honestly don't think I would ever prefer it to touch ID. Not unless they can somehow make face ID unlock my phone while it's coming out of my pocket, or while lying flat on the nightstand next to my bed.

I'm excited to try FACE ID. Just wish there was a way to complete the unlock process verbally. Like if they had some kind of technology where the phone could recognize voice commands...OH WAIT...THEY DO!!!

"Hey Siri, Go Home!" And if you are authenticated...she goes HOME!!!

LOL!!! Thanks for pointing out the obvious Ming-Chi, you're brilliant. Of course they will include it on new phones going forward if it's successful.

You use a finger that isn't registered with TouchID. I do this all the time.
one handed? sounds tricky.

to bypass, you'll need to do some actions which would equate to the actions you'd need to do with faceID.. such as press the side buttons to temporarily disable it.. though i suppose you could also just close your eyes.. or don't swipe up.

They should put TouchID in the side button.
they should put it throughout the glass.. touch anywhere on the front or back glass and it can read your print.
(not that i actually think they should.. i imagine it would take quite a bit of effort to get that going with no benefits other than opening your phone... that said, it would be cool if it could be done with a reasonable amount of effort)

I can't see Apple investing in all that technology just for one phone.
