For most of the developed world where people drive a car, having to take your eyes off the road everytime to unlock your phone feels like using a rotary phone. Fingerprint, on the other hand, can be unlocked by touch.
There's never a time when I use my phone without at least initially looking at my phone, and to be honest, looking at my phone to unlock it even while driving doesn't take as much effort to unlock it as using a fingerprinted sensor does. People who discuss Face ID for the most part are simply unfamiliar with how it works.

LOL, the same people creaming their pants over the ultrasonic fingertip detection were the ones who thought that moving the fingerprint sensor to the back of the phone was a good idea (the main thing the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor really does it lets you move the sensor to the front of the phone). These are the same people who don't get how much better Face ID is than fingerprint readers, but then of course they love 2013 tech in new clothes. As for the new screen, Samsung's shaved a couple of mms off the bezels while leaving a gaping hole in the front while the cameras are at best an incremental improvement.

Of course, the Android fanboys are trapped in the Google reality distortion field, and so they're super excited about this phone.

If people aren't intelligent enough to grasp how much better Face ID is at this point, there's nothing anyone can say to reach them. The Touch ID crowd are either people so completely set in their ways they won't change (and for the most part, those people aren't on here) or people so committed to the Android ideology in which everything about Android is better than everything about Apple there's nothing one can do to reach them. The Android fanboys who are enraptured with fingerprint sensors are the same people who last year thought putting the sensors on the back of the phone was a great idea.

The only really good argument I've read for the superiority of fingerprint scanners is the one someone posted about how so many people in Asia wear masks over their faces for health reasons. Look, when I read that Samsung had iris scanners, I thought that was amazing until I found out how insecure they were.

Man, how is Face ID better? I own the XS and Face ID is considerably slower than the fingertip reader in my previous iPhone 7, you also have to be in portrait to use it, take your attention away of what you are doing (like driving, working).

Sometimes I am also in bed with my face turned or slighly covered and it doesn’t work. Sometimes I am wearing a darn hat and I have to take it off just to unlock my phone, or my glasses, I had to create several “appearances” for it to work sometimes.

And how is it more secured when my cousin's phone can be unlocked by her mom? But with fingertip reader she can't. We have contacted Apple about it twice and every time we reset it it works and then within weeks it "relaxes" and begins to unlock with her mom's face again.

So no, Face ID is not better, and you saying people is not intelligent for not agreeing with you is the dumbest thing, come on.

I honestly have no idea why people don't get how great Face ID is. I just look at my phone, and boom it unlocks.

The problem with Face ID is there's a high probability that your phone will unlock with someone else's face. Search YouTube for "face id fail" to see tons of these.

spec differentiation from iPhone models, including an ultrasonic fingerprint on display

I love new tech, and its cool and everything, but isn't FaceID more secure? Hooray for the cool factor, but what am I missing? If 99% of the time they are equally as convenient, am I crazy to not be celebrating the less secure method?

Actually, in terms of my personal investment in Apple products, I am more afraid of Google’s new OS that they might offer some day on any platform than I could be afraid of any Samsung phone.

And maybe Apple should be too.

If Google succeeds they will have survived the last few years with a crappy mobile OS and kill everybody else with their new one.

Not sure where this goes or whether it’s just following the path of many “cool” Google projects.

Luckily I am just a customer and usually will recover in two years or less...

Oh puhleeze....Samsung is garbage
LG and Samsung supply displays for the current iPhones. By your logic, half of all iPhones are garbage because they use a garbage company's garbage product.

How's that 5K LG's backlight bleed problem doing these days?

It's akin to saying Corsair is a garbage company because their RAM failed you three times in a PC build when Corsair's RAM is likely made by SK Hynix, the same supplier for Apple.

Do you often use your phone without touching the screen?

No way I am giving up my iPhone any time soon, but Samsung pre-order shipments on the increase and iPhone sales on the decrease … does not sound good.

It is good for us. We get cheaper and better iPhones.

You know that Samsung makes several parts for the iPhone, right? It is only designed in California, the actual thing is made in Asia with parts from Samsung and other providers. Samsung has provided chips, screens, and even wireless technology.

Cheaper? Cook would rather the company go bankrupt than reduce the price of any product by even $1.

If anything, lower sales = even bigger price increases in the future.

The cheapest Mac laptop used to be $999 in Canada. Now it’s $1,500. Apple has gone insane.

The finger print sensor wins the day in my book... enough for me to actually be considering switching from my current 6s Plus.
I'm not a fan of Face ID on any device and Apples take on the technology is cumbersome.

Why would you say that? My finger print does not work if my hands are greasy. I have to keep it clean. With face id, I just have to look at it. It is faster and more reliable than finger print. Samsung went out of its way to hack in a finger print sensor since they haven't figured out how to make the face id work. Apple is ahead on this one.

This Samsung 10 is full of GIMMICKS! People love the notch, people love poor battery live over thickness, people love new emojis...

Who cares about ultrasonic fingertip detection? Who gives a damn about an all-screen front and Powerful cameras??

People like innovation, like removing the ability to turn off wifi from Control Center and bumping price tags.
You, my friend, are very good with sarcasm.

Samsung have done great with the S10, I've been using mine for the past 6 hours and it has exceeded expectaions.

Samsung is going to do very well this quarter and sell a lot of S10's. No doubt. Especially when people don't care about tight integration between their computers and phones. I, for one, could not live without the seamless "almost-one-extended-device" feel that the Apple platforms bring.

It's amazing when I set an alarm on my iPhone and my Watch alerts me at the same time, without having touched my watch. I know this experience can be emulated to a certain extent by using the same apps on multiple devices in the Samsung/Android world, but it requires effort to set up and will never match the Apple experience to the same degree. Never.

Looking forward to the next model that can make the display hole transparent/opaque so there's no hole when not using the selfie camera (see YouTube video below for idea). Also, on the next Galaxy S10e add another fingerprint scanner on the other side for ambidextrous use and for more secure multi-factor thumb+finger authentication (one finger for unlock and two for payments/secure folder).

Well fortunately the S10 uses sound waves to scan your fingerprint, so it works with wet hands or greasy fingers.

The fingerprint authentication is often more convenient, e.g. when using Apple Pay. Also, the Face ID sensors are what caused the "notch". I'd much prefer a small "hole punch" front camera like Samsung is now using (and brilliantly integrated in the UI) ...

Every time I see a knock on the notch, I ask myself "has this person actually used an iPhone with a notch?", or are they just armchair commenters disliking because it's popular to dislike.

The notch is a non-issue. The hole-punch that Samsung brought is very cool, but doesn't really solve the (apparent) problem that the notch introduced. It just looks cooler and more futuristic.

People think the rounded sides of the S10 screen are cool, but look at apps that don't optimize for that... text that's blurred as it bends around the corner. Not exactly a stellar experience, but hey, it's cool, right?

The way I figure it is this. With Apple, they and my carrier have access to my data. With Samsung, Google, Facebook, which cannot be deleted, Samsung and my carrrier have access to my data. That’s one of the main reasons I chose Apple. Am I naive to think this way?

Unfortunately, yes. If you’ve used the Internet, your anonymity and privacy are long gone. Some data aggregators have as many as 20,000 data points (details) about you. Apple can’t recover what is already known about you.

Fast Company has an excellent article about the shadow brokers and their tools.

Yep. My teen is dumping his iPhone for the S10. Tired of the same old thing, iPhone after iPhone.

You should not be touching your phone when you are driving, so your argument for Touch ID over Face ID is a non-starter. Sorry friend.

That's fine for him. Completely understandable from a boredom perspective. It's good that he'll gain experience with other devices. That will let him make a more informed decision next time, rather than just going with what's cool or different for the sake of it.

We need to remember that sometimes a phone is a productivity driver for a lot of people. I would be completely lost if I switched platforms. It would be a lot more work to setup and configure an Android phone to do what my iPhone does for me.

I like iOS better than I do Android. I like the specs of the Samsung S10 and I could get used to the cutout on their screen. The one thing that stops me from purchasing the S10 is the fingerprint scanner. I have psoriasis which makes fingerprint scanners completely useless. No matter what with that phone I would have to type in the passcode. No thanks. At least, give me the option to use facial recognition or the fingerprint scanner.

Working in an industry where I often have gloves on, or cooking or whatever that makes your hands messy, it's been SO nice to not have to rely on fingerprint. I love Face ID.
Its all a matter of tradeoffs, i work in an office environment where my phone is laying on my desk all day, Facial unlock is useless in this situation, hence i'm so glad to have the In Screen FPS AND Facial unlock. (Yes i know facial unlock isn't that secure but its fine for the office and all apps thats need security use the FPS like Banking apps)

S10 has facial unlock. Not as in depth as apple but it's there.

The S10 does give you that option!
