20 grams, not 17-18. And on something that weighs 157g, that 20 grams is not insignificant from an engineering standpoint.

iPhone X: 174 grams
iPhone XR: 194 grams
iPhone XS: 174 grams
iPhone XS Max: 208 grams

Samsung Galaxy S9 (2018): 163 grams
Samsung Galaxy S9+ (2018): 189 grams
Samsung Galaxy S10e (2019): 150 grams
Samsung Galaxy S10 (2019): 157 grams
Samsung Galaxy S10+ Glass (2019): 175 grams
Samsung Galaxy S10+ Ceramic (2019): 198 grams

174 grams -157 grams = 17 grams.

The Xs Max is the first "face id" phone i have had, and i really miss touch id. If both were available it would be great, faceID alone doesnt cut it. Everytime i want to see what time it is when i wake up in the night i have to hoover my face above the phone laying next to me, thats SUPER annoying. Previously i just had to place my finger and i could see what time it is.

So - FaceID alone as a solution has been a clear decline in user friendliness seen from my point of view. Under screen fingerprint sensor in addition would be nice.

Not saying im going for Android or anything like that, but they sure have some awesome hardware, and in many cases superior to Apple. (besides cpu's)
I only have a 6s, but there’s a clock on the lock screen; I never have to use TouchID to see the time. In fact I make sure not to unlock it because it makes the time harder to read then, since it’s displayed in such a small font. On the lock screen, it’s much larger and easier to read.

So there’s no clock on the lock screen for the FaceID models?

Well there seem to be plenty of people enjoying the discussion here proving you wrong. If you're so dead-set against even acknowledging the existence of anything non-Apple, there's about a dozen Apple-only threads from today on the homepage for your pleasure.
Ming-Chi Kuo has no idea what's going on. His better-than-expected preorder numbers mean his predictions were off by a mile and now he’s trying to explain his mistake away — with some spec sheet comparison worthy of a youtuber. Kuo shines when he’s revealing actual information from inside sources within Apple’s supply chain. Both his predictions and explanations are useless.

If you want to understand competition within the smartphone market, read Horace Dediu, listen to his podcast, watch one of his presentations. But don’t tell me, Kuo’s mentioning of Samsung’s tripple lens camera was a valuable inside into the environment in which the iPhone exists.

One needs to ignore this meaningless spec race in order to not be ignorant to the actual means of competition. Apple’s best-selling phone has one camera lens, just one!

The fingerprint authentication is often more convenient, e.g. when using Apple Pay.

You may have a point about convenience… but only if you’re ignoring the fact you can ‘arm’ ApplePay prior to needing to pay at the checkout, so convenience of Touch ID over Face ID is moot at that point.

Going back to my iPhone 7+ feels like visiting a museum. Just picking up your device and, you know, looking at it, is the most natural and unobtrusive biometric ever created. I’d never go back.
This. And as for the headphone jack: haven’t missed it for a minute since I got my AirPods. Although I do carry the adapter with me in case of unexpected parties where the audio system can’t do AirPlay or Bluetooth... ;)

No way I am giving up my iPhone any time soon, but Samsung pre-order shipments on the increase and iPhone sales on the decrease … does not sound good.
Samsung had an absolutely terrible 2018, almost 10% down in units.

And that’s likely to continue, the pressure from Huawei and other Chinese OEMs is intense. Samsung has already disappeared from the Chinese market.

The Chinese are selling the same product (Android) and it’s very easy to switch. That’s hitting Samsung and “other” Android OEMs much harder than Apple.

When it comes to Kuo’s reasoning, I very much doubt the headphone jack and apparently-not-that-amazing in-screen fingerprint reader have much to do with anything.

It’s more like S7 and S8 owners are finally upgrading after skipping the relatively poorly selling S9.

First off, I find the camera systems on all of these phones to be really overrated. I can't remember the last time someone on any system sent me a photo that just blew me away. The photos I took with my iPhone 6 5 years ago hold up very well with the photos I take with my X or the photos my Galaxy or Pixel friends send me. It's not like the early teens when the cameras were making huge leaps every year. So maybe they've figured out some way of taking photos that's way better than the photos everyone else is taking or more likely they're just doing the same incremental improvements reviewers and commenters often overhype. (And of course, in 6 months Apple will come out with a camera system that if trends hold, will be incrementally better than the Galaxy phones.)

My old full frame sensor DSLR from 2009 took better photos than today's flagships, what's your point? A Hasselblad film or digital kills today's leading full frame DSLRs.

In terms of mobile photo quality, large strides have been made.

...and of course that really matters to no one, it may come as a shock to you but even 90% of IOS devices in use don’t have FaceID....run for the hills
[doublepost=1551942554][/doublepost]

So you never touch it?
You know exactly what I mean. Trying to be smart - are you still in school?

Working in an industry where I often have gloves on, or cooking or whatever that makes your hands messy, it's been SO nice to not have to rely on fingerprint. I love Face ID.
I have family and friends in the construction business that says the same. Their hands are always “dirty” or their fingerprint is just messed up. Before they had no choice but to use a numerical passcode.
I hope that Apple can improve the angle and width of the FaceID sensor; and why hasn’t the iPhone been granted the “magic” of unlocking in landscape, like the iPad?!

That hasn't been true for me since the iPhone 3Gs. But I also haven't wanted a Samsung anymore since the Galaxy Note 4.

I now buy Xiaomi. More bang for the buck. Looking at what you guys are willing to pay for a gadget with a two year life span, I save around a thousand bucks and don't miss out ob anything. But everybody feel free to spend your money on over-priced toys. I'm sure the new emojis are worth it. :)
What an odd post; even the iPhone 5s from 2013 got the latest OS (iOS 12) which has the new emoji. No one on iOS has to buy a new phone to get the yearly emoji update... I guess that’s how it works for your Xiaomi phones? That must suck :(

And two year lifespan? I’m in my fourth year with my 6s. I’ll probably keep it until the iPhone 11S comes out in 2020. It still runs great.

iPhone’s life span is easily 4-5 years if you replace the battery once. You will even get the software updates for 4-5 years.

Two year life span describes your Xiaomi and other Android phones very well, though.

There aren’t enough words to describe how wrong you are. And you’re simplistic echo chamber argument indicates you wouldn’t understand anyway. In case somebody is truly interested in understanding Apple’s competition, at least get your knowledge from an expert.

I'm not sure why you're chastising that user when you're effectively agreeing with him in his chastising of the user who complained of this site being about Samsung rather than Apple products.

What part of this sentence was difficult to understand?

If you cannot comprehend why news about iPhone's competition is relevant and interesting to iPhone fans, there's just nothing to do but let you enjoy your own ignorance.

And equally, I may want to discretely unlock my phone.... making the fingerprint reader a preferred selection. Sounds like both are worthwhile.

I took a look at their profile. Barely active until the Pixel 3 was released this past fall. Too fishy. Usually you see that with PRSI posters.

Yep. My teen is dumping his iPhone for the S10. Tired of the same old thing, iPhone after iPhone.
I grew up long ago. Back in the early days of the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3, I was all about the specs. Blu-ray, better graphics etc etc. I even thought about getting a 360 instead of a PS3 I was that desperate to have a new console. I was 15 or so at the time. Then, after bashing the Wii for ages on said above, I finally played one & had fun - I even bought one. I now own a Nintendo Switch too (and a PS4).

I began to realise specs is not the be all and end all. Same with Macs too. Windows has better specs, but most of the time, Macs just work. I don’t care about getting the next best thing to keep up with the Jones’s. I just want my stuff to work and work well. I don’t care if the next iPhone is similar to the last one specs-wise. It runs iOS, and that’s what really matters. I couldn’t care less if iOS looks stale or whatever. I just want to use them. Apple provides you with that. It’s what they’re best at.

Personally, I'm getting the 10E. It costs exactly as much as my iPhone 7 when it was new. I refuse to pay more than 800€ for a phone.

I wish Apple had not abandoned the fingerprint sensor. I am not against facial recognition, but I still want a fingerprint unlock.

EDIT: Oh yea, and Samsung still offers a traditional audio jack. Apple screwed up eliminating these two things.

Face ID great but having under screen fingerprint scanning as an option would be good too.

A lot of times my phone is flat on the table and I just need to quickly check something and Face ID is useless.

Having both in the iPhone would be the best option.

You still have to tap the screen to wake it to allow Face ID or lift the phone up for raise to wake. Either way you still have to touch your phone in some way.

Probably not many iPhone switchers, just people with older Android devices, looking for a new one.

All in all, competition is good.

He has to touch screen, but he has no problem unlocking.

Might be a good reason to stick with Apple, I continue to keep my 6S because I like IOS and the eco system.

I don't think Apple's ego will ever let them reincorporate the fingerprint sensor (huge mistake on their part) and the audio jack … I fear, sadly gone forever.

The only thing I miss about the audio jack is being able to speak hands free on the phone and charge it at the same time.

Touch ID would be useful when I have sunglasses on and Face ID doesn't work

theres never sun in californa - oh wait it was rain!
