Going back to my iPhone 7+ feels like visiting a museum. Just picking up your device and, you know, looking at it, is the most natural and unobtrusive biometric ever created. I’d never go back.

Completely agree. I love my XS a lot more than I thought I would and I don't miss the finger print sensor / home button at all. What I have found interesting since my 79 year old Mum picked up a 6S is that touch ID fails 90% of the time. She has really strange flat pads on her fingers (or suckers as we're now calling them) and no matter how many times we set a device up they just don't register for unlocks, FaceID for her would be way better.

If the S10 turns out to be a hit (and still costs over $1K) then the argument that iPhone sales are down because of high prices goes out the door - and the next logical conclusion is....

Here in the UK the base S10 is £799 with 128GB storage. The iPhone XS base model is £999 with 64GB storage. That’s a £200 price difference with half the storage.

So price is a factor. Across all models the Samsung is cheaper and offers more storage compared to Apples offerings.

The S10+ models are around £1000. They are charging what Apple charged in 2017 when the iPhone X was launched. I think those prices are the highest companies should ever charge.

Working in an industry where I often have gloves on, or cooking or whatever that makes your hands messy, it's been SO nice to not have to rely on fingerprint. I love Face ID.

But you still need to swipe up with your finger....So FaceID needs two actions: Looking straight to the device (which is not possible if it is laying flat on the table) and swiping. I need to type in the code often because of this. An ultrasonic TouchID would be very welcome for me.....

Actually you’re wrong. I’ve had every iPhone with Touch ID for the exception of the SE versions and the iPhone 8. I’ve had the iPhone X and XS Max. I could tell you without a doubt, Face ID is more convenient and easier to use than Touch ID. Also the notch is almost invisible, what I mean by that is you only notice it when you think about it.

Face ID is useless when I’m having breakfast and the phone is flat on the table. Before with Touch ID I could still unlock my phone easily and start browsing. Now I have to crane my face over the phone to use Face ID or more often than not use the passcode which is taking me back to pre biometric sensor days.

Face ID is great but having option of both would cover every scenario of phone usage.

It's hard to pick who believe who's right; phone arena shows first day sales for the s10 lower then the s9, and zdnet says its higher than the s9 by 20%.

https://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-S10-sales-numbers-compared-galaxy-s19_id114271
https://www.zdnet.com/article/korean-galaxy-s10-pre-orders-20-percent-higher-than-s9/
Yeah but those article are only about South Korea and Samsung already said that those estimates presented on Phonearena are wrong and their S10 sales in South Korea are bigger in comparison to the S9 when it was launched.

(2) spec differentiation from iPhone models, including an ultrasonic fingerprint on display (FOD), rear triple-camera, and bilateral wireless charging...

The ultrasonic fingerprint is in principle a good development, but so far still too unsafe for an iPhone, because it technically reproduces the papillary pattern of the fingers by orders of magnitude coarser than Apple's capacitive surface.

Triple Lens: I just came back from a photo vacation. I had a wide-angle lens with me (Sandmark add-on). Did I use it? Never! Why? Ultimately, an even more wide-angle lens than Apple's standard lens distorts the perspective image into the surreal. So why buy a gimmick that's only used for maybe a few fun shots (and that's just a marketing weapon to blind people like Ming-Chi Kuo)?

Bilateral wireless charging? Marketing word. Nonsense. No applications. Gimmick.

Still with the headphone jack?

Apple includes a wired pair for no charge. BT works fine. There is an adapter if you really need it.

Anyway, for me---not an issue, but to each their own I suppose.
It's not in the box, you have to buy it separately(for the latest iphones at least).

Now Samsung offers their costumers: a headphone jack(so no adapter needed), a much better pair of wired headphones in the box and a free pair of Bluetooth earbuds if they preorder. Oh and BT also works just fine with Samsung phones, there are no limitations in this regard.

How is the s10 innovative? The only innovative thing that could be said is the finger print reader and the hole in the screen.
you said it yourself.
innovation means featuring new methods;introducing new ideas.so there you go.unless you disagree with English language terminology.
As far as sales tanking that could apply to any phone
Yes,to any phone that doesn't deliver, doesn't impress, isn't worth the price tag,and lags behind competition.

In OR you should have gloves which makes fingerprint useless anyway, and oh...in an OR please leave your phone off!

Maybe people that work in them need to check their phones between cases. Not trying to be rude, but the tone of your post seems pompous.

This is one thing I can never understand about a Galaxy release. I realize it’s not or normally is not as packed or big as an iPhone release (at least in the earlier days), but everyone and there granny knows within 60 days these phones will already have great discounts... Why not wait???
Because the S10 is a compelling phone.
The S10's higher than expected preoders sets quite a positive tone for Samsung for the entire 2019 because yeah prices will also go down eventually.

my iPhone Xs during pre order (with ofcourse no free goodies or real discounts to be found): €1159
my S10 pre ordered a week ago with a nice discount and sold my free Samsung Buds, at the end I paid: €619

so that's a difference of more than €500 (and double the storage ;) )

It's not that hard to see the absolute greed to money Apple has. Every company has it ofcourse, but Apple is King is being greedy for money.

Selling a plastic clear case for the iPhone Xr for $45 which costs about $0.90 to make is ofcourse the ultimate example of Apples greed to money and not the greed for customer experience anymore.

Well, Apple definitely need a wake-up punch in the face. And I hope it results in dismissing their entire marketing department who have failed to understand what the masses want. Now they have a lot of damage to repair. I'm still an optimist though. People have to hear this loud and clear: it's not a Samsung' success - it's an Apple failure!
And, please, let Timmy go, make Federighi a CEO.

The finger print sensor wins the day in my book... enough for me to actually be considering switching from my current 6s Plus.
I'm not a fan of Face ID on any device and Apples take on the technology is cumbersome.
Face ID cumbersome? Either you haven’t tried it or had an unlucky experience the one time you did try it. It’s the smoothest way by far to unlock the iPhone and I was a complete sceptic when it was released. Having both would be great though

Well sorry about the "supposed tone", but the thing is, in between cases you remove the mask anyway as they are disposable.

I mean you do not go in an OR with the same stuff twice, at least here.

LOL, what is innovative about the Galaxy phones?
we are talking specifically about S10,not Galaxy phones in general.
to answer your question,I need to teach you what the word innovation means first:

Dictionary result for innovative
/ˈɪnəvətɪv/
adjective
featuring new methods; advanced and original, introducing new ideas.

2 example that S10 innovates is 1-Ultra Sonic under display finger print sensor 2-the idea of minimal laser cutout for camera.sensors instead of a large notch

these 2 features fit into description of innovation, they are both new methods and new ideas.so unless you disagree with English language terminology, you are beaten in this argument.:D

of course the XR costs less than the 8 Plus did when it was released
the Xr is more expensive than iPhone 7 Plus..(launch prices).
the iPhone 8 Plus came into market after iPhone X,it's price was set according to Apple's new pricing strategy.
Meanwhile, of course Android fanboys didn't have any problems with the Pixel's single rear camera which they absolutely creamed over.
Silly, silly comment.
and what you made think I'm an android fanboy LOL can't you see my signature?
I have and iPhone Xs Max (pre oredered day one),before that I had 2 iPhone X,iPhone 7 Plus,iPhone 7,iPhone 6s,iPhone SE,iPhone 4s in that order
and I also have an iPad Pro,Macbook,Airpods,Apple Watch
I don't even own an android device.
(but I've had a Samsung Note 5 and Samsung Note 8)
now who's comment is silly?:D

S10 also has face unlock which provide enough security for typical phone unlocking without compromising security like online payment which requires the fps. So you can have best of both worlds.

And before you regurgitate Samsung face unlock can be fooled with photo, have a look at this which debunked the clickbait video that claimed that

The S10 is a great looking phone. And if you pre-order, you get the Galaxy buds for free included, which alone is tempting. Realistically, I think this is going to be a strong year for Samsung, especially since they are already offering a lower cost option with the 10E as well, and then you have the Note 10 likely coming around August, which should be interesting to see.

The whole issue with Apples implementation is that you still have to swipe to get into the phone. This makes the In Screen FPS the better option as it is more versatile.

That's the same with me when I got the Note 9 512gb. After factoring freebies and discount (excl. trade-in value) I just paid about 40% of the price of XS max then. Many apple apologists can't comprehend and refused to believe this can be true.

Touch ID was at 99.99%, FaceID is at 97%. It also works without looking at the display, there are some situations. Now I need always look at the display.

You should not be touching your phone when you are driving, so your argument for Touch ID over Face ID is a non-starter. Sorry friend.
One doesn't require any form of biometric recognition with Android when driving.
Android has a feature that a allows one's phone to remain unlocked in a safe environment. e. g. Car's Bluetooth

Apple has reached peak nickel-and-diming and I hope the consumers finally vote with their wallets. At least the top-spec'ed XS Max should have included the AirPods in the box.

Other than that: 5W charging bricks in 2019, no lightning/USBC to audio or USBC to lightning charging cables in the box, no cable extensions for Macs, a whole new litany of add-ons for the bendy iPad Pro (incompatible pencils and smart keyboards?!?), exorbitant accessory/peripheral pricing (why is the black Magic Mouse €20 more expensive again?!) and so forth. Plain sloppy and greedy. They deserve a good smack in the bottomline.
