Ya know, they could just make it slightly thicker, like people have been asking for, and then put the killer 120hz display in it with a big battery.
The problem is Apple has this perverted obsession with making their products thinner, even at the expense of features and quality of the product.

”people have been asking for”, where “people” always means “me”.

Apple doesn’t ship specs they ship features. What is the feature here that people are missing?
Is this a test? I feel like this is a test.....

I'll bite: is the feature square sides!

That statement makes absolutely no sense as the article says Apple will ship the 120hz "feature" next year.

The fact that other phone makers have no issues implementing a 120hz display makes Apple look a bit behind the times.
The new Samsung S20 5G (see, it has TWO new features!) has a setting to enable or disable 120hz. The user can actually choose display quality or battery life. To be honest, even with 120hz enabled, the battery life is excellent.

It’s akward to give the user the option to choose between display quality or battery life.

Low battery mode does that today. When it's turned on, the user chooses to artificially limit CPU clock, display brightness, and other niceties in order to preserve battery power. Nothing "awkward" about it. It's a good thing when the system gives the user the option to choose their priority at the time instead of making the compromise for them.

I kind of hope they go the Samsung route and get the edges of the phone a bit narrower too. I can live with the notch, its the form factor that I'd like to see cut down a little. It's not truly edge to edge as they say.

I got the 11 Pro last year so I'll sit this dance out, but its nice to see some phone evolution.

Lmao I love how people actually seem to dislike 120hz like it makes the experience worse for them. It’s such a polarizing feature, but I definitely want it. All I’m saying is, for 1K+ devices, even if you don’t think you care about 120hz, you should still want it.

First of all, I’m happy they didn’t compromise with 120 Hz, and it will come next year along with LTPO, so it can actually be implemented correctly, and not a half job like the majority of android phones have been doing. For those who don’t know, almost all android phones that go up to 120 Hz have to downscale the resolution to 1080P, and take a huge noticeable performance and battery hit when it’s enabled. Also, if the rumors are to be believed, 120 Hz on the iPhone Prototypes was causing a decrease in color accuracy and brightness. I’m happy that they’re waiting for 2021, so that way 120 Hz can be enabled with absolutely no compromises.
And for those who are saying that this is a boring year for iPhones, get used to it. Every year going forward is going to be relatively small to years that have came in the past. So don’t expect huge iPhone 3GS to 4, or 5S to 6, or 7 to X size upgrades. Every year is going to feel smaller and smaller when it comes to upgrades. Also, keep in mind that when Apple releases a new model, they are not targeting customers of their previous model. The iPhone 12 is not directed at iPhone 11 customers. It’s directed at those who are still on iPhone XS, X, 8, 7 or below customers. Going from an iPhone 11 to an iPhone 12 won’t feel like a big upgrade, but going from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 12 will feel like a big upgrade. Just keep that in mind, the majority of people don’t upgrade every year, and the time between upgrades for the majority of customers is getting longer and longer. People hold onto their phones for years nowadays. I see more iPhone 6, 6S, and 7s out in the wild then I do iPhone 11 ‘s.

This hasn’t been true since 2014 with the iPhone 6. iPhones have only gotten thicker and heavier since.

I'll just quote Apple's marketing materials for the iPad Pro:

"but also features incredibly advanced technologies. Like ProMotion, True Tone and industry‑leading colour accuracy, which make everything feel responsive and look stunning. Quite simply, this combination of features makes it the world’s most advanced mobile display."

Ooooh yeah here it's already started.People saying 120 hz is not an important feature ...Yeah most people won't have 5g support for the next year(rest of the world?yeah screw it) or so but sure it will be a great feature for apple's marketing tricks...Hey let's not forget we will have a weather widget with newest ios....

I had an Android phone with a 120Hz display and even with a 4000mAh battery setting the display to 120Hz would drain the thing in a few hours, so I completely understand why Apple is not going to ship this feature. Anybody who says they want this feature does not understand its impact on battery life and would not want to use this feature if they had it on an iPhone.

im so upset about 120hz I wouldn't mind having lower batt, this has been annoying the leaks on and off :(
Would this really mean bad battery life or Apple keeping in pocket for next years big thing. Seems like once again if Apple wanted to deliver the best featured hardware, it would have happen. Not the bread crumbs.

iPhone 12 models will not support a 120Hz refresh rate due to battery life considerations, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today. Kuo expects the feature to debut on 2021 iPhones with lower-power LTPO display technology.

In a research note obtained by MacRumors, Kuo added that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 will feature a slightly narrower notch to adequately display information in the top-left and top-right corners like the time and signal strength. The rest of the lineup, including two 6.1-inch models and one 6.7-inch model, are said to have the same notch size as iPhone 11 models.

Kuo expects tomorrow's Apple event to be focused on new Apple Watch and iPad Air models. He expects the new Apple Watch models to have a similar form factor as the Series 5, with a key new feature being blood oxygen sensing. Kuo believes the Apple Watch will not receive a significant redesign until the second half of 2021 at the earliest.

In line with previous rumors, Kuo said that the new iPad Air will feature Touch ID integrated into a side power button, which will apparently pave the way for an "all-screen" design like the iPad Pro. Kuo expects more new iPad models to adopt this feature starting in 2021.

Whatever guys says a million different things, bound to be right sometimes,
Glad he doesn’t give quarterly predictions anymore because he was never even close

Apple could have easily put a 60hz/120hz setting in there.
Okay.... Get ready for the "yes-but"......

Yes, but, remember when Apple said on stage years ago that they weren't about being the first to market, just the first to "do it right"?

I think we should all just trust Apple that 120hz refresh isn't there for a very good reason, of which one of them might be listed here (but perhaps another one):

1. Heat
2. battery
3. ridiculous cost that they would have to pass onto consumer

A question for thought, though: does anyone seriously think that Apple COULDN'T make 120 hz refresh happen? They have a good reason for it, and 60hz isn't terrible.

But, like you said, it does seem silly 120hz isn't there in a 2020 phone. Biiiiiiiiig shrug from me why Apple wouldn't put the 120hz in.... reviewers will certianly have something to say about that. 🤷‍♂️

People always seem to forget the extra weight that brings with it, iPhones are already heaviest in their class by a margin.

Agreed. And for those that think going thicker is the solution, it’s interesting to note that Samsung went thinner on their latest Note, in large part because the bigger the device the harder it is to hold when it’s thick.

I’m definitely getting tired of reading all the complaints about as yet unreleased iPhones and why Apple should have done this or that. There is just too much ignorance when it comes to understanding the challenges and trade-offs required when bringing a consumer product to market.
