Bit surprising Apple is planning on screwing more money out of customers during a massive economic downtown.
good news for all those cheap eBay and aliexpress accessory sellers though.

Pretty sure that if apple actually does this, they don’t expect that most customers will buy Apple chargers, given that there are so many far cheaper choices available.

But continue assuming the worst motives.

I’m eagerly waiting for the day when greedy Tim Cook will be called steve ballmer of apple and be departed from the company.

No, the EU's goal is to have manufacturers stop shipping chargers period. Think about it, what's the environmental benefit of mandating a universal charger if every single device is going to ship with a charger anyway?

A secondary goal is to harmonize the market, specifically for countries that can't use Europlug (those that use the British plug).

The EU saw the Japanese do it successfully, where their phones traditionally shipped without a charger (but annoyingly, they used carrier-specific ports).

Absolutely - and if Apple used standard ports, that wouldn‘t be a problem. Wireless charging ist NOT the answer. It‘s slow and inefficient, wastes much more power than regular power bricks.

The only reason to do this is just plain old greed.

Sure. Same argument was, when they removed 3,5mm. Supposedly, this way they are making SO MUCH more money, literally quadrillions in Lightning to AUX adapters as now people are desperate and every body needs adapters for their headphones

I'm fine with that as long as they give me a gift card to buy an accessory. I don't need the power adapter and earphones as I have plenty of them at home so I'd rather buy something else with a discount.
If they just ship the phone without power adapter and earphones at the same price, I'd be disappointed. Either a price cut (unlikely) or a gift card would be great.
I'm sure they could say it is to reduce e-waste and put a positive spin on it.

Hmmm. I am not convinced this is true. The Galaxy S20 is more expensive, and the OnePlus devices either have limited 5G or decreased device specs. I feel like this holds true across manufactures. Either they cost more or they didn't get the appropriate spec bumps of a new generation device.

not sure - 5G and non-5G versions of the S20 cost about the same here (plus / minus 20 bucks, depending on daily deals)

This is totally about shipping costs.

They can make the boxes half the size without a wall plug ( iPhones aren’t thick, meaning they can get twice as many on a plane

Who are all the crazy people disliking the comments saying that a charger should be included in the box? Are you saying you'd rather be forced to buy a charger separately? I don't understand!

Apple may include a charger for the normal price, but an option would be to offer a $20 discount with no charger. So the iPhone and the charger would be in a separate box for these. I'll be surprised it will happen this year, maybe next. Apple has leaked this to test customers reaction.

I would be interested to know if this is actually legal in the UK.
Selling an electrical device that may need an additional purchased to either get it working in the 1st place as the batter ran out whilst in-store. Or not be able to use a new device much until an additional charger was purchased.
Would a customer not legally expect a product to be able to work when they got home, without expecting them to know another item needs to be purchased.

I'm sure there will be no LARGE WRITING on the box saying you need to buy a charger in order for this product to work, in easy to see and understand ways.

Just curious, will the charger from my iPhone X work in a wall outlet with the iPhone 12 if this rumor is true? Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure, but there is a lot of products that are sold without a charger and only with a usb cable like certain smart bracelets or small speakers. But those are in the range of 20€ and lower... Just imagine if everybody would do the same: You buy a TV, but you have to buy the cable to plug it in. Buy a dishwasher and then you have to shell out 30€ for a proprietary cable. Buy a refrigerator, plus 50€ for a cable.

Apple has probably done their research and found that the majority of consumers never touch the charging brick which comes bundled with every iPhone. I have quite a number of those plugs with a usb c and a port myself.
This was actually quite smart from Tim Cook. He started the policy with crappy low voltage slow charger 5 years ago, and stick to it untill people started ignoring the charger in the iphone box all together due to being total crap. And now Tim Cook said "Well if you people dont like our chargers, then theres no need for us to inculude it in the box anymore!" ;)

Seems the world is desperate for chargers.

And I was thinking, having a trillion chargers scattered around in our apartment, I should invest in companies producing facial masks or medical equipment. After reading the forum I change my mind. Chargers for the win!

That is not possible, that would be stupid af
we bet you said that for rumours that told us the headphone jack will be out
With future iphone going port-less, this is the right move. But from my point of view, they need and should release their airpower product, from business perspective this is the way. more profit from that accessory alone

In France, they will have to include EarPods (this is a transcription of an EU law) as described by Consomac:

This decision should nevertheless come up against European regulations, which specifies in its French version that “Radio terminals intended to be connected to a network open to the public for the provision of telephony service cannot be marketed without an accessory making it possible to limit the 'exposure of the head to radio emissions during communications'. In other words, it is impossible to sell the iPhone without its headphones within the European Union.

I really hope it is true that they stop shipping these free accessories. It makes very little sense to include headphones and chargers in EVERY iDevice sold. The headphones are purely eWaste and the chargers are becoming increasingly unnecessary.

I have had my iPhone 7 since launch. a good deal of my friends have migrated over to android due to cost of Apple. despite the cost I had convinced myself Apple was worth while. I have had so many things go wrong with my Apple devices and this move just puts me back in the fence about moving to Android. I had two MacBook Pro’s then I sold it and went to Microsoft once i had the screen replaced , the top case replaced and the power brick replaced. My iPhone 7 had to be exchanged due to the speaker. My iPad 2017 pro developed the bright white spot above the home button a few weeks after the warranty ran out, which is an issue people have complained abaout but Apple never did anything. so yeah I was just waiting for another reason to give up I suppose.

There will never be a point where being able to charge your phone out of the box will become unnecessary.

USB C is dead.
Then why is USB C being used in the iPad Pro? And why is it the only port in the MacBook Pro? Nice try.

I think the more likely outcome is:
  • iPhone SE: Cord included, but no charger (sold separately)
  • iPhone 12: Cord and charger included
  • iPhone 12 Pro: Cord and high speed charger included
That makes much more sense and gives even more product differentiation across the SKUs. It also avoids the nasty perception that people who pay $1000k+ for a phone don't get a charger (in fact, they'll be getting an upgrade under this plan)
