It's wrong in my opinion.

I feel like yes environmentally it's a good move, but the fact the cable is USB C->lighting means that almost everyone who has a plug won't be able to use it with that cable.

I think the only way to do it properly is to, like with the headphone dongle, offer it for either a reduced price if purchased alongside or within x weeks of the phone, or just offer it at a very cheap price anyway (e.g. £15).

I personally just worry this will lead to many people buying off brand absolute rubbish for 50p that leads to increased risks of house fires etc.

I just want to note what we all know Already but mostly fail to exceeding. We have more power as a consumer When we band together than the companies. They make the decisions and roll them out such as price increases, design aspects such as usb-c and skimping on what they are putting in the box

if we all just simply stopped buying Apple just for 12 months , they would have no choice but to listen or suffer financially. But I know that’s just way to much to ask for people to band together, it’s more important for people to be showing off their latest gadget to uplift their ego.

If this is true, IMO it is Apples convoluted way of preparing users for the move to iPhones without connectors. Remove the charger now, ride out the hate, and threats for a year, then when the wireless charge only phone arrives in 2021 the blow will be somewhat lessened.

It's still a huge mistake IMO. :apple:

I think the more likely outcome is:
  • iPhone SE: Cord included, but no charger (sold separately)
  • iPhone 12: Cord and charger included
  • iPhone 12 Pro: Cord and high speed charger included
That makes much more sense and gives even more product differentiation across the SKUs. It also avoids the nasty perception that people who pay $1000k+ for a phone don't get a charger (in fact, they'll be getting an upgrade under this plan)

What? iPhone SE is already out and has a charger

The iPhone 12 really started out as something special with no notch, much better screen, etc. it’s turning into a really underwhelming model. Not seeing any reason to move from the 11 pro yet and I normally get every new model.

This to me is unacceptable especially considering a lot of Apple users may not have numerous USB-C chargers just floating around and we should not assume everyone has multiple USB-C devices. For a phone or any device that costs of AU$1000 as a starting price a 20W USB-C charger should be included as it is required to charge the phone. USB Chargers are way too slow due to their lower power output, compared to USB-C and non-USB C laptops will still take forever via USB. The actual production cost to Apple would be a couple of dollars maximum due to mass production, so the inherent "value" of the item is not a true reflection.

The previous 5W chargers with the previous iPhone's was useless as it took forever to charge due to its low wattage. Apple should include a 20W USB-C charger at no additional cost if the customer asks for one, otherwise the customer can clearly indicate they already have one. Bear in mind this means the cost of the phone should shrink by $50 otherwise it's purely profiteering. This is akin to buying a car but paying more for tyres. Under Australian Consumer Law it would be deemed that the USB-C charger is required to use the device as designed and therefore should be included.

This makes me ponder will they try this trick on future hardware releases?

Unacceptable. iPhone 12 needs USB-C, and it needs a charger in box. Nothing less.
If you need one then you are free to buy one. For those of us who have sufficient working chargers and cables it is unjustifiably wasteful for a company to produce millions of electronic accessories that just sit unused in the box, or result in working older ones being thrown away.

There are many who rely on the supplied headphones especially since Apple removed the headphone jack and they cant Just go pick up a cheap pair. As far as no charger that one is a head scratcher.

I would gladly accept lack of charger if the phone came with USB-C. Now that would be a fair deal, Apple removing e-waste while opening themselves fully to a general standard. That way they could also ditch the charging cable...

Apple generates billions of dollars per quarter so let that sink into your head. Every change Apple make to a product is to try to make you buy their accessories. The lame excuse that it will cost more to support 5G is nonsense and an excuse to maintain the price. If anyone is not happy, the best thing to do is hold off on making purchases. Remember the supply and demand, less demand will cause the supply to increase. We have seen not ago when less people buying Apple products and we started seeing all different offers. Charger not included, not acceptable.

If this is true, the next thing to go will be the cable. Then, it will be on to the Apple Watch. I can’t wait for the day that the band is sold as an optional accessory!
I can picture Tim Cook standing on the stage and announcing “an exciting new feature” that will allow you to use the Apple Watch as a pocket watch with an old timely chain you can buy and attach to it. And then the Apple store website refreshes and we find out that the watch no longer comes with the band 🤣

I know people don’t believe Jon Prosser right now but he reckons this won’t happen so right now it’s all just rumors.

Imagine if all consumer electronics companies enact this policy?

Buy a new 4K TV? Buy a power cord.
Buy a 4K Blu Ray Player? Buy a power cord.
Buy an XBox? Buy a power cord.
Buy a PlayStation? Buy a power cord.
Buy a camera? Buy a power cord.

The cost starts to add up for consumers.

Is Apple assuming that there are no new customers? no one buying an iPhone for the first time?

This move will deter people from changing from Android to Apple... unless the other OEMs follow this practice. In that case, I would support legislation mandating a manufacturer include a power connection cable and plug with every device sold.

iPhone 12 models will not include EarPods or a power adapter in the box, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in a research note obtained by MacRumors. This lines up with a prediction shared by analysts at Barclays earlier this week.

Kuo said that Apple will instead release a new 20W power adapter as an optional accessory for iPhones and end production of its existing 5W and 18W power adapters later this year. The form factor of the new 20W power adapter is said to be similar to the 18W version, with USB-C Power Delivery for fast charging, as seen in the leaked photo below.

Kuo believes that iPhone 12 production costs will significantly increase due to 5G support, but he expects Apple to sell the new models at a comparable price to its iPhone 11 lineup, and removing the EarPods and power adapter from the box is one way to reduce costs. Apple would likely also tout the environmental benefits of such a move.

Barclays still expects Apple to include a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box as the only accessory included with iPhone 12 models.

Kuo also expects that Apple will stop including a 5W power adapter with the second-generation iPhone SE later this year, but he said that a 12W power adapter will continue to be included with current generations of the 10.2-inch iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini.

Also, like someone above mentioned, most people with an iPhone have USB-A to lightning power bricks. Most people buying the iPhone 12 will need to purchase a new power brick.

While the competition is tripping over themselves to include freebies and give-aways, Apple is actually paring down what goes in the box? Doesn't seem to make sense.

But the old truism as it relates to Apple is in full effect here. No matter what they do, they won't please everyone.

Sure. Same argument was, when they removed 3,5mm. Supposedly, this way they are making SO MUCH more money, literally quadrillions in Lightning to AUX adapters as now people are desperate and every body needs adapters for their headphones

So are you telling me they didn't save money in manufacturing costs by not including the headphone jack? Are you also saying they didn't make extra money by selling AUX adapters? And are you saying the removal of the headphone jack didn't contribute to sales of Airpods at all?

Be honest, Apple didn't kill off the headphone jack because it was the best thing for their customers, they removed it to make more money and sell their own branded wireless headphones at a high margin. The best thing for customers would be to give them options so they can decide what is best for their needs.

Sure if you’re never had a phone...would people rather prices go up? Or stay the same?
Oh c'mon...that is how you choose to spin Apple being extremely cheap here? Apple is the most cash rich company in the world. But you are saying they should NOT include a cable and charger to keep prices low? Really?

The cable and charger are 2 basic things a phone needs to operate it and keep it running. Imagine a new iPhone customer for the first time.....no cables....no way to charger their brand new iPhone. Ridiculas!

No I don’t agree with it but that’s how apple’s mindset will be. Post is if Apple increases the price by £30 with the charger included would people care? Likely not but keeping the price the same and no power brick is a huge deal

That said I still don’t believe a this report and a few leakers don’t believe it either.
