It comes with a cable that you can use, just not the wall plug. Stop.

i'm sure this has been said in the multiple pages of this thread that i haven't got to yet, but i'd imagine there are a lot of people who do not have a USB-C power supply, including me. i'm a tech person, and while i have things that charge with USB-C on the device side, they are USB-A on the power side. a lot of laptops these days are coming with USB-C, but most desktops still do not. so if you don't have cables already from previous apple purchases, you have to buy a brick.

i'm not effected at all here because i have plenty of lightning to USB-A cables and multiple 5w bricks. but i think there will be a percentage of people (first time iphone buyers, people without USB-C power sources) that will be forced to buy a power brick to use their new $650-$1,200 device.

If true, I doubt this is a cost savings move. This makes sense to me from an environmental standpoint.

Having owned many iPhones and iPads through the years, I have a surplus of chargers — some have never been opened. What happens to the old charger when you get a new one? Landfill. The cable might need replacing, but the charger should last.

Also, I have EarPods that haven’t been opened — I use AirPods, so why do I need another pair of EarPods that won’t be used?

It’s a practical move. Hopefully other companies follow suit.

If this is "true", it would be the ultimate Apple's greed.

It would be like selling a car without wheels and a car stereo.

#PATHETIC!
It takes courage to save the environment.

I will. The Pixel is better than the iPhone in several ways, has a better camera, comes with a charger and its $400 cheaper. This isnt 2008 any longer with laggy Android phones. Competition has passed Apple by years ago. I will not miss the iPhone or greedy ass Apple for a single second.
Well not really about the competition, but to each their own opinion. But enjoy your pixel.

Most iphone buyers are repeat customers. Most iphone buyers who are not repeat customers already own a device that has a usb charger. So you are talking about ”first time buyers of a device that charges with a usb charger.” Small audience that is.

So, yeah, they may have to pay $5 at walmart or a drug store to pick one up, or pay apple $20 for their fancy one. The rest of us get smaller boxes, with less waste. It probably makes sense in the grand scheme of things, but even if it’s a close call, the histrionics about it on here amuses the hell out of me.
I think it’s more about the feeling of being nickled and dimed for everything these days.

iPhone 12 models will not include EarPods or a power adapter in the box, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in a research note obtained by MacRumors. This lines up with a prediction shared by analysts at Barclays earlier this week.

Kuo said that Apple will instead release a new 20W power adapter as an optional accessory for iPhones and end production of its existing 5W and 18W power adapters later this year. The form factor of the new 20W power adapter is said to be similar to the 18W version, with USB-C Power Delivery for fast charging, as seen in the leaked photo below.

Kuo believes that iPhone 12 production costs will significantly increase due to 5G support, but he expects Apple to sell the new models at a comparable price to its iPhone 11 lineup, and removing the EarPods and power adapter from the box is one way to reduce costs. Apple would likely also tout the environmental benefits of such a move.

Barclays still expects Apple to include a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box as the only accessory included with iPhone 12 models.

Kuo also expects that Apple will stop including a 5W power adapter with the second-generation iPhone SE later this year, but he said that a 12W power adapter will continue to be included with current generations of the 10.2-inch iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini.

This may sound crazy, but it gets around the EUssr wanting the same charging cables for all phones.

I’m pretty sick of this à la carte attitude. Headphones and a charger probably cost them incredibly little to manufacture in China. With the famously healthy profit margins Apple has on their product they can afford to include necessary items

They agree. They may just think these are not necessary items for most people.

Are you being "nickel and dimed" if, as rumored, there is a $50 decrease on the price of the phone?

Play with me further still - Let's assume the rumored $50 price cut is false, so $700 retail price. BUT ....

During online checkout Apple made the EarPods and charger optional items. That is a checkbox includes EarPods for $30 and a checkbox includes a 5W charger for $20. (their retail prices) Clear those two checkboxes and presto $650 iPhone 12. Tell me then that everyone would still need the EarPods or charger. Or that they'd pay to have them included. Or that this wouldn't be seen as a "devious way" by Apple to upcharge the price of the phone.

I'm not saying people aren't emotional right now or that they aren't concerned what this could evolve into. But, given monetary incentive to exclude them - I very much doubt they'd be as required as they want them right now.

Apples customers are loyal and not to include a charger in the case is a slap in the face. This is not a cheap iPhone it’s their best and yet they cut corners as if your buying an economy iPhone.
SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! Tim Cook
Not right and goes to show what you personally think of an Apple customer

You mean Tim CROOK

Amazing how much this rumor has got people so mad. I still don’t hold too much weight in this rumour. That said even if it happens i still don’t think this will stop being from upgrading. By the time the phones are announced it will be something people will get over.

Probably when you purchase the phone they will ask if you need a charging block, included free, or at a small cost, if needed. This tech is moving towards wireless charging anyway, eventually portless. Personally I have never used the charging blocks.

I was more ticked off when they removed the extension cord from MacBook packaging, which is pretty essential in my practice. Although it's only $19, which when considering the price of a MacBook, isn't much.
Yea I think the cost should be low but high enough to discourage people from buying it just to add to their cache.

The 3DS. And no, Nintendo was not sued. It's not a big deal.
A video game system is much less vital than a phone.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'm sure there is a small amount that don't have an A port somewhere, but C is much less likely.

I'm not so sure that's a really good defense of their inclusion. Did you know that hotels are not always offering mini-shampoo and conditioner bottles? Either at all, or only though bulk dispensers, or only on request. There is a similar freakout going on - guests want those mini bottles - but not because they're valuable or necessary. That I know of hotel shampoo and conditioner is typically scorned for being cheap and low quality like the EarPods and 5W apple charger. But still they're disappearing because they're incredibly wasteful and solutions are available.

No this doesn't mean that they'll start charging you for the sheets or pillows, or the bed itself. They're just eliminating a wasteful part of their business.

I just want to note what we all know Already but mostly fail to exceeding. We have more power as a consumer When we band together than the companies. They make the decisions and roll them out such as price increases, design aspects such as usb-c and skimping on what they are putting in the box

if we all just simply stopped buying Apple just for 12 months , they would have no choice but to listen or suffer financially. But I know that’s just way to much to ask for people to band together, it’s more important for people to be showing off their latest gadget to uplift their ego.

So, you want customers to vote with their wallets, and are disappointed that people go on to do precisely that?

This is going to be like the removal of the headphone jack all over again. Yes, some people will be inconvenienced, but I am willing to bet that the majority of customers are not going to be negatively impacted at all.

Is this even legal in places like the EU? I guess if it’s optional but free?

I thought devices always had to include a charger to charge it? I understand having the option to remove it though - to save waste.
Actually, the EU tried to get Apple to move away from their lightning connector and NOT include a charger, simply due to the sea of unused chargers hanging around.

Oh no! I have $1000 for a new phone but not $1030 for a new phone and a charger. What will I do?

Be honest, Apple didn't kill off the headphone jack because it was the best thing for their customers, they removed it to make more money and sell their own branded wireless headphones at a high margin. The best thing for customers would be to give them options so they can decide what is best for their needs.

Be honest, Apple decides what is best for customers. The only options will be whatever Apple dictates what customers' needs should and will be.

The iPods never cane with a wall AC plug...

iPods never came with a brick, even under Jobs

Yes they did but you were probably much too young then.
Some of the Older iPods came with a dock, too.
Still have a few working iPod models.

They will lower the iPhone price for the cost of the charger. At the checkout you will be able to add the charger and bring the total up to expected price, maybe just a bit above.

This way they tick the environment and lower cost box. They will also promote new slimmer iPhone packaging and tell you how they will save the environment by reducing packaging volume.

Its funny how people will believe anything.
Apple not shipping a phone with a charger is silly and would cost them more than it would save the.

I wonder if, when the phone goes portless apple includes a wireless puck.

If not they could be testing the waters so they can ship their port-less iPhone with nothing.
