What are you going to use the phone for that requires 1TB?
Mostly photos and videos.

While it was sort of expected to see Apple not bumping up the base storage of the Pro lineup to 256GB, I sure hope we'd see it one day in the future. (sigh)

But still, pretty stoked about the upcoming phone, looking forward to finally upgrade from my iPhone X! ;)

Just two days ahead of Apple's annual iPhone event, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has outlined expected storage capacities for the iPhone 13 lineup.

In a research note with investment firm TF International Securities, obtained by MacRumors, Kuo said the iPhone 13 lineup will start with 128GB of storage, with no 64GB option for any models. Kuo added that the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will be available with up to 1TB of storage, which would be the largest capacity ever offered for an iPhone.

The exact storage capacity breakdown is as follows, according to Kuo:

iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13
  • 128GB
  • 256GB
  • 512GB

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • 128GB
  • 256GB
  • 512GB
  • 1TB
For comparison:

iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12
  • 64GB
  • 128GB
  • 256GB

iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • 128GB
  • 256GB
  • 512GB
Apple's event kicks off on Tuesday, September 14 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. MacRumors will have full coverage of the announcements on our website and across our social platforms, including @MacRumorsLive on Twitter, so be sure to follow along.

Why would a iPhone user need more than 256GB??? My iPad has that much and I have like 217GB free!

I've got an 11 Pro with 256. Looking for reasons to buy a 13 Pro, but only need 128. Any compelling reasons come to mind? Seriously.

Obviously it will never happen, but how cool would it be to have a phone with a NVME slot where you could just pick your own storage or expand as needed. I was using more than the 256 on my S6 Tab and just threw a 512 in it. So easy..

8-plus user with 256GB and I still have 230GB free — but I also rely on a 2TB iCloud account and Apple Music so that reduces the memory significantly.

Might go 128GB if I do go for the 13 — although the rumours of the 14 are really making me pause and maybe wait another year.

I see... but 1TB of photos. Oh god can't even imagine something like that for myself.
Photos are NOT the only digital media people keep on their phone. Personally I have a LOT of music files and playing them in my car directly from my phone saves a LOT of streaming charges. Also, occasionally load movies for trips. Likewise savings streaming charges.1TB is a god send.

But without pro apps it's mostly pointless and just a dumb flex to have such power just to shoot some amazing photos on your vacation or for your socials.

That's what I'll never understand why someone would buy a pro for casual use — sites like FB, Twitter, Instagram all compress the hell out of photos and videos — they rarely look anything like the originals.

I'll even bump up saturation (sometimes very high) on photos before posting just to try to save the look of the original before it appears on Instagram or FB.

Twitter for videos is beyond ridiculous for compression - any video looks like it was shot with a flip phone from the mid 90s.

1TB of music is around 20,000 hours of music. I doubt many people have the need to keep 400,000 songs on their iphone.

Any 1TB iPhone takers? As someone who uses about 30GB of storage, I am genuinely curious what so much storage space can be filled with? And how does one backup/restore that beast, if needed?

Cool. My phone uses ~26GB of its storage with iCloud photo sync on (so it keeps just proxies or w/e on phone) so I don't really feel like the base model had real issues here, but we know this NAND-flash isn't that expensive to offer and they were definitively behind their competition.

Why? Memory is a thing that has gotten a lot cheaper. It’s technology. It’s like buying a blurry player now compared to when they first came out. Old tech gets cheaper.
what normally happens is a new better tech come out and replaces previous.
Flash memory might be getting cheaper, but other components are getting g more expensive as shortages go on. Odds are this is to make price increases more palatable, where comparing last years models with the same storage looks comparable, even though the base price goes up
