Where is Ming-Chi Kuo getting these numbers from?
I’m not saying it’s not true but how is he getting the figures exactly?

Personally I would be game for the 14 Plus if I upgraded this year, I don’t particularly need any of the Pro features in my Pro Max, I mostly got it for the bigger screen.
Ming-Chi Kuo does supply chain numbers, not pre-order numbers. Apple may have outpriced themselves in some EU countries because of the dollar's strength but no prices have raised in the US so this report is not only unreliable but not very valuable. Everyone is assuming it's speaking to them in their country when it really says nothing.

This is mostly down to the exchange rate correct? Like hasn’t the Euro dropped by 20% of its value compared to the dollar?
The US dollar and the Euro are now at par. It's remarkable. Who'da thunkit? In fact, because the Canadian dollar has kept pace with the US dollar, I'm now considering vacationing in Europe next year. Mind you, prices are increasing on everything in Europe now so maybe it won't be so cheap even in Canadian dollars by then.

There's a reason why Starbucks used to have the same coffee shop on either side of the street. Even though it would make more money consolidating on 1 side, the idea is there is always a customer that could go to a competitor if your not on the other side of the street too.
There were three main competitors in the warehouse hardware store market in Canada: Home Depot, Rona, and Lowes.

In my area, Lowes built a new store one block away from Rona to directly compete against them. Then a few years later, Lowes bought the entire Rona company. Guess what? That was 6 year ago but both stores are still there, and by all accounts, both stores are doing very well, despite only being a block away from each other and carrying a lot of the same brand products.

The iPhone 14 is one of the lamest updates to their mid-range line since they took this product lineup strategy with the iPhone XR/XS year.

I don't think they intended to go the non-binned A15 and marketing as BIONIC route. This is probably Apple coping as elegantly as they can with international semiconductor shortages.

If they do this again next year, I would be concerned that Apple is killing off their mid-range line due to penny-pinching neglect.
How many people are buying an iPhone based on what CPU is inside of it? And who is even using all the power of these chips in their day to day iPhone usage?

Same hope for a pro mini, but just one camera (to save space for battery, and don’t really need more cameras) high refresh screen, and USB C
That's not a Pro mini. That's just the 13 mini with USB-C.

I specifically want the Pro mini for the telephoto lens and ProMotion. The battery life of the 13 mini was fine. I'd forego the useless ultrawide camera lens in order to fit the telephoto lens in its place, but anything less is too much of a compromise.

It’s because of their pricing strategy. Why buy a 14 Plus when you can get Pro (albeit smaller) for 100 more.

They should have put the Plus at the price of the normal 14 and the 14 at a 100 less (so directly replaced last years line-up and kept the same prices). I guarantee if Apple did this they’d see the Plus outsell the 6.1 14.

Oh and yes, the rest of the world has seen an unbelievable price increase so that will also play a part. Those who buy the pros are less likely to scoff at a price increase unlike the target market for the stand 14s.

I think the same as you, but look at these:

-Cheapest non se is 12 64gb or 13 mini now which are still every expensive, much more expensive 11 last year. 64gb with this price is a joke.

-Non US places like Europe or Japan have around 20% increased price. Ho exchange rate? Zero price increase in China, so don't expect they will drop price if USD drops, they just increase price because they can.

-14 replace batter price raise 43% to $99

Just one word to describe all of these: greedy

Shocker! Old design on the non-pro models with some substantial price increases in many parts of the world. Who would’ve guessed these were not gonna sell like hotcakes LOL

I'm pretty sure they would sell a lot more of the non-pro models if they also included the dynamic island. Otherwise, the non-pro models are pretty much the same phones as last year but without sim card slots.

High refresh screen in my list is ProMotion, and that kills more battery, hence the need of reducing the camera count more to make it perfect for me. And stainless steel instead of aluminum of course. I’d pay 5 chickens for it

The headline is pure PR nonsense. People are not buying the phones, because Apple got too greedy and finally pushed the prices too high.

Here in Norway, we've seen multiple price hikes over the last 10 years or so. Apple products went from being fairly reasonably priced and accessible, to becoming overly expensive. I've basically stopped upgrading my Apple stuff, to get the latest and best performance, and now keep my Apple products as long as I can.

Apple obviously thinks that people will still buy their stuff, even when overpriced - WRONG.

For every price hike the excuse is the same "weak currencies in Europe" or "strong US dollar". However, every time the currencies balance out, Apple never lowers the price again. Instead, they keep increasing the prices again and again.

I'm so close to being done with Apple at this point.
Hmm interesting. In the US they kept prices the same despite very high inflation, which pleasantly surprised me. to still be selling the pro at the same $999 as iPhone X in 2017 is astoundingly good, given the inflation since then. Sorry to hear it’s different for the rest of the world 😕

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have seen "bad" pre-order results, indicating that Apple's positioning of the two new standard models may have failed, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

iphone-14-iphone-14-plus-in-hand.jpg

In his latest post on Medium, Kuo explained that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have seen "neutral" and "good" pre-order results compared to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Delivery wait times of more than four weeks may indicate good demand for the new high-end devices. It is apparently "unclear" whether Apple will increase shipment forecasts of its Pro models, but there is a "growing" chance that it will cut orders of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, which currently account for around 45 percent of the entire lineup's shipments.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are expected to be in stock in retail stores on their launch dates, "reflecting lackluster demand." As it stands, Kuo says that the pre-order results for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are worse than those of the third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 13 mini. He noted that Apple cut orders of both the third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 13 mini in the first half of 2022 due to low demand.

If demand for the two standard models do not improve, Apple may cut iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus orders as soon as November. Suppliers who are not major beneficiaries of Apple's iPhone 14 Pro models will likely see the start of declining revenue in September and October as a result.

For iPhone 14 Plus, in particular, the "pre-order result is significantly lower than expected." As a model that effectively replaces the "mini" form factor in the latest iPhone lineup, with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes now being the only options, Kuo said that "Apple's product segmentation strategy for standard models fails this year."

All four of the iPhone 14 models were announced by Apple last week and have been available to pre-order since September 9. The iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are set to launch on Friday, September 16, and the iPhone 14 Plus will launch on Friday, October 7.

I'm sure there are many factors, but people around the globe are struggling to buy groceries and power their homes. Maybe it's as simple as a poor economic environment.

Even accounting for exchange rates and taxes, prices are about an additional 10% higher in Europe.

uh no - this is perfect marketing.

apple doesn't need the revenue. they will keep doing this for 1-3 cycles - by which point most of the apple buyers will realize its better to upgrade and spend money on the pro, as the regular version isn't really an upgrade. apple will discontinue the regular 14 and 14 plus models (or w.e. number at the time) and everyone will have gotten used to paying the "pro" price of iphones. A few years after that, apple will introduce the iphone ultra that will be priced even higher than the pro and thus the cycle repeats.

To conduct research on your own go to www.apple.com. Click on "iPhone" at the top, then "Compare". For the phones to compare select the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14. Then just start scrolling and look for differences. It is there you will find the problem.

They kept pricing the same in Canada too, despite the rumours that the Pro and Max were going to see price increases even in the US. Historically we've paid about 7% more in Canada and that hasn't changed in 2022, but the good news is the Canadian models have kept the SIM slot. So these Canadian models, which haven't increased in price, can have either dual eSIM or else eSIM + nano-SIM.

Yea...unfortunately some of us are here for the innovation.

They FAILED because I opted to not upgrade a total 5 iPhones in my very own household this year as well. Glad I contributed to this failure. I dont want a $hitty no sim card tray brick to carry around. Being a minority of Americans who travel beyond the mainland, I'd like the option of a sim card tray when not every carrier and their mom offers your stupid esim throat forced concept yet on prepaid. Maybe in 5 years sure, but not now. I do not want your propaganda concept to pay ridiculous roaming charges and crappy internet when I am abroad to US carriers.
I will be updating two phones and probably will get the AW8. So I’ll get your non-orders.:apple:

That's not how batteries work... You can't just drop a camera, add another component that draws more power, then call it even. If you don't use the third camera, it's not drawing extra power when it's not in use. There's no harm in including it other than a marginal cost and added weight. But part of the "iPhone Pro" moniker means that all three cameras are included. And honestly, if I had to pick two cameras, the 3x telephoto is far more useful than the ultrawide. I currently have a 13 mini and a 13 Pro here with me, and I can tell you that since getting the 13 Pro I've used the telephoto far more than the ultrawide.

I know Apple thinks they're upselling people by gatekeeping the telephoto lens at the Pro level, as opposed to before when it used to be included with the X and XS. But until they offer a Pro mini it's missing the mark. It's not about the cost to me -- I'd gladly pay a Pro Max price for a Pro mini. It's 100% about the size and weight of the only devices that include that particular lens.

As far as the display goes, the ProMotion display uses less power because it can scale the refresh rate dynamically all the way down to 1 Hz and match refresh rates for video content, which are often either 24 Hz or 30 Hz. Most time spent on the phone is looking at static or near-static content. The 13 mini and regular 13 run at 60 Hz whenever the display is on, even if it is displaying static content. That wastes a lot more power than occasionally ramping up to 120 Hz for a fraction of a second while the system animates an app opening or closing.

When the minis first came out I wanted the stainless steel for its appearance. Having since used a 13 Pro for a few months, I'd actually prefer the aluminum. I don't care for the appearance as much, but it is significantly lighter -- so much so that it's the difference between holding a heavy phone that is uncomfortable and a phone that feels just right.

High refresh screen in my list is ProMotion, and that kills more battery,
It’s actually the opposite! ProMotion screen preserves battery since it can go as low as 1hz and 10hz unlike the non-pro screen that always hovers at 60hz. You can check the Apple stats yourself and you’ll see why the 13 Pro and 14 Pro get more screen time while watching video or browsing on one charge. It only ramps up to that high refresh rate of 120 hz while gaming or scrolling non-stop.

That would be a bad choice. I'm hearing a lot of friends, myself included, which decided not to upgrade because of the price increase. I would have with last year prices, or even a modest increase. But not this, I decided to punish Apple with a lost sale.
Same in my household. I had already upgraded to 13 mini in the summer, but my partner will hold on to the 11 for one more year. No point at the moment, plus the prices are insane.
