That's not how batteries work... You can't just drop a camera, add another component that draws more power, then call it even. If you don't use the third camera, it's not drawing extra power when it's not in use. There's no harm in including it other than a marginal cost and added weight. But part of the "iPhone Pro" moniker means that all three cameras are included. And honestly, if I had to pick two cameras, the 3x telephoto is far more useful than the ultrawide. I currently have a 13 mini and a 13 Pro here with me, and I can tell you that since getting the 13 Pro I've used the telephoto far more than the ultrawide.

I know Apple thinks they're upselling people by gatekeeping the telephoto lens at the Pro level, as opposed to before when it used to be included with the X and XS. But until they offer a Pro mini it's missing the mark. It's not about the cost to me -- I'd gladly pay a Pro Max price for a Pro mini. It's 100% about the size and weight of the only devices that include that particular lens.

As far as the display goes, the ProMotion display uses less power because it can scale the refresh rate dynamically all the way down to 1 Hz and match refresh rates for video content, which are often either 24 Hz or 30 Hz. Most time spent on the phone is looking at static or near-static content. The 13 mini and regular 13 run at 60 Hz whenever the display is on, even if it is displaying static content. That wastes a lot more power than occasionally ramping up to 120 Hz for a fraction of a second while the system animates an app opening or closing.

When the minis first came out I wanted the stainless steel for its appearance. Having since used a 13 Pro for a few months, I'd actually prefer the aluminum. I don't care for the appearance as much, but it is significantly lighter -- so much so that it's the difference between holding a heavy phone that is uncomfortable and a phone that feels just right.
Dropping one camera creates more internal space for a bigger battery. I thought ProMotion draws more power than regular as Apple called 14 plus the best battery in an iphone, not 14 Pro Max. I guess that’s YMMV

I did think Apple re-using the A15 chip in the regular 14 would hurt sales. The 14 is also missing Dynamic Island, which I thought was the best new feature from the 14 model lineup. If I was a non-pro user, I probably wouldn't upgrade from the 12 or 13 to the 14 either.

Well fold build quality is horrible, welcome to Google it. I would never buy Samsung stuff again because they are super in marketing and outlook design but build quality is the worst.
Have you ever used a Galaxy Fold? The first gen's build quality sucked. Every other generation after that improved it greatly.

How about Apple knowing with the 14 plus being delayed people are impatient, as is my problem, and have already order the 14 pro max. Apple, I’m sure, has nothing to worry about.

I think people want the new phone and don’t want to wait till October. That doomed the 14 plus more than anything else

I'd pay whatever for a pro mini. Currently on the 12 mini, but probably will buy 13 mini next september.
If they gonna stick to 2 sizes, then bring it down a bit. 5.7" and 6.4" would be a better fit for more people imo. Comparing with MacBooks, it feels like they only sell 15" and 17" with no 13" available.

13 to the 14 is basically the same phone. Glad it’s failing.
BTW, you should be aware that there are two important difference between 13 and 14: RAM 4GB -> 6GB and much much better thermal structure. It has already been revealed that there is a high chance 14 Pro will be less performant than 14 Plus, simply because 14/14 Plus has better thermal and can make A15 perform better, while A16 will still be thermally constraint.
(This situation is basically the same as in 13PM, where 13 Pro Max is actually less performant than SE 3... because it virtually lose frequency whenever you do anything.

I see a lot of fold 3,4 problems. A lot of people saying fold 3 build quality is BS in my local forum.

Extremely unlikely. A16 is built on a new process and has significantly lower performance core power utilization. It also has much higher memory bandwidth.

Not that it matters. I haven't cared about iPhone SoC performance since A12 (other than improvements to support new cameras, etc.).

Or maybe, and I'm just spitballing here, maybe people are in no hurry to order a phone they can't actually get their hands on until October? I was planning on buying a 14 Plus myself because I'm not a fan of the steel frame on the Pro Max, but when I saw it was the only phone not shipping in September I was primed to take a more generous look at the Pro Max (and then the Dynamic Island sealed the deal).

A more realistic headline would be "Apple disappointed by lackluster sales of phone they're not serious about selling"

I don’t want to have to buy new pants with bigger pockets, just to carry my phone. I will, however, buy the 13 mini before it goes away.
Not this trope again...

How small are your pockets?! Coins only? :p

But seriously, my wife carries her 13 ProMax in her purse, and I've yet to find pants that cannot accommodate it or my 12 Pro.

That said, I don't wear women's pants, so perhaps I don't know what I'm talking about. ;)

we can talk about this until we all turn blue and it won't make a difference to Apple. All they have to worry about is the tsunami of money going into their bank accounts.... it is very difficult to manage money. making money is easy by comparison.(at least for Apple)

If most of is don't buy new iphones this year, we can make an impact.

Hopefully, they will apply the same rule they followed to stop iPhone mini production and bring it back.

The iPhone 14 Plus makes no f sense, a iPhone 14 mini would.
The Mini failed for two years. How does it make sense to bring it back at $700 to start? It doesn't. Instead Apple will keep it in the lineup and it will reach a lower price point where it will sell better. Then they can just update it every 2-3 years instead and call it the 'iPhone Mini'. No numbers needed.

If it Bombs then perhaps they'll get the idea that not everyone wants a huge phone, not everyone has huge pockets and a huge wallet, they need to cater for a smaller niche market for the mini, same for the ipad mini, the accountants might say the sales are lacklustre but what they don't know is that probabley everyone who wanted a mini actually bought one, so in fact it satisfied the demand and sold out ... ie a success !

Here in Canada, a 256GB 14 Plus is $1399 where a 256GB 14 Pro Max is $1699.

Anybody who would spend $1399 on a phone would spend $1699, and I imagine that's what the majority will choose.

The budget-conscious folks I know have been going for the 13 or 14 at $999 and $1099 respectively.

I buy an iPhone every couple of years (5-6 ideally). I bought an XR in early 2019, which means I'd buy an iPhone 16 or so in early 2025. Lack of RAM is probably the biggest problem at that point.

I cannot believe Apple is oblivious to the fact that the disposable income of most parts of the iPhone-buying population is both limited and shrinking, while at the same time, Apple is trying to squeeze every more money out of their use-base by differentiating and expanding their product lineup for both physical and non-physical products.

2007: Desktop, Notebook, Phone (and iPod, if you want)
2022: Desktop, Notebook, Phone, Pad, various headphones, TV-player, speakers, Watches, Displays...

At this rate, I doubt anybody has money left once they finally release the car.

Not surprised by this:

- Pretty much the same SoC
- Same design except for one being larger

Regardless of what many think, consumers are more tech savvy than ever. They know what has the latest specs and can see clear differences.

I can bet you next year with the iPhone 15, they will drop the Plus model, upgrade the standard with the latest A17 and Dynamic island. The only difference will be the camera.

Apple is stretching itself too thin. The fact that most of the orders I’m seeing on the thread are for the Pro Max model, people see these phones as long term investments. Might as well get the best specced model.

I'm pretty sure you won't buy the 13 mini in September 2023. If you haven't decided that the 13 mini is worth upgrading to now, I doubt you will decide to do so next year. I also use the 12 mini as my personal phone. I like the size. I'm going to get the battery replaced in a month or two by Apple for $69 bucks because battery life is the one weakness of the 12 mini phone, so a degraded battery (I'm at 84% now) makes that issue a bit worse.

When Apple makes another iPhone mini, I will probably buy that one as a replacement. But I won't spend hundreds of dollars in 2023 to buy the 13 mini.

I think the price difference is too small for many people to go for the plus model. the more or less subjective advantages of the plus - color choices and weight - are probably not enough. I was really into buying the plus before the keynote. It wasn't just about the money. I expected a weight around 200g and Apple delivered. But the missing 120hz are really a problem to justify the purchase. And then Apple presented the pro with dynamic island.

So now we have the pro which is too expensive. Beside the weight I would really like to buy it. The plus seems a strange compromise. It doesn't have the island, which immediately feels like an old phone.

My mum preordered the iPhone 14 Plus right away, it's an upgrade from her iPhone 11. Somehow she never considered the Pro model line up, might be due to no fun colors. With the later launch day, people might preorder whatever launch this Friday over a different product releases in October.

It's just too early to tell.

It should be noted that this lackluster demand is probably still demand that only a handful of non-Apple premium level smartphones see. Apple will claim that it is the massive headwinds of the very strong US dollar that has caused them to raise international prices, which is hurting demand. In the US, with prices remaining the same as last year, the phones look more reasonable in price. That said, I'm always of the view that you pay more and get the pro version in most cases. I resell my phones eventually, so if the pro costs me $200 more now, I know I will get at least $50 of that extra cost back eventually, and very likely I will get back $100.

I have a 13 mini and the other day I picked up my old XR -- which is the same size as ~15% larger than the regular 14 -- and found it atrociously large. If Apple keeps this up they may never sell me another iPhone.

Edit: EugW corrected me on the size.
