I upgraded my 12 mini to the 13 mini yesterday purely to spite apple for discontinuing the mini lineup this year. I was pumped to upgrade to a 14 mini but alas.
I did exactly the same thing this week, though not necessarily out of spite. I will be using this phone for the next three or four years at least, because I have no desire for a monstrous phone.

Your 13 Pro Max is hopelessly outdated by Dynamic Island alone. Also the notch is ugly.
The dynamic island is certainly a nifty and unique way to handle the need for the hardware it hides. However it’s hardly the must-have feature you make it out to be. Realistically you gain a negligible amount of screen real estate versus the notch and what you do gain is pretty much solely used for things like notifications and media playback status. Again, nifty but hardly necessary.

If you think dynamic island is about screen real estate you have no idea what you're talking about.

The idea of dynamic island is about blending hardware with software. The notch is not usable, wasted space where as the dynamic island becomes part of the user experience.

It’s about attempting to make use of what would otherwise be wasted space. I’m sure if it were possible to implement the FaceID hardware under the screen Apple would prefer to do that and have a truly full-screen device. Since they can’t, dynamic island is a way to maximize the screen real estate they’ve got. The core of the dynamic island is static. Physically the only thing separating the dynamic island from the notch is a sliver of screen between the island and the bezel. If Apple wanted to they could’ve readily implemented a “dynamic peninsula” for phones with a notch. Of course Apple wouldn’t want to do that because there would be one less selling point for the 14 Pros.

And yes, we can all read Apple’s ad copy about how it’s a blend of hardware and software and other magic.

I see a lot of people complaining about the price. But it looks like people are forgetting exchange rates and now the USD is stronger and is causing prices to go up for countries outside of US. The Euro has fallen dramatically and will cause prices to rise. It’s not just Apple doing it for the heck of it. Why would you raise prices for no reason knowing it could hinder buyers from purchasing?
lol, Apple forgot to change the prices when the $ was much cheaper than the €. Don't be so shortsighted.

Uh, you do realize that the 14 and 14 plus don't have the dynamic island and have the same notch as the 13 right? This thread is about the sales of the 14 and 14 plus and doesn't have anything to do with the 14 Pro. My point was that someone could buy the 13 Pro Max over the 14 plus and be getting essentially the same phone.

Talking about "fail"... I see no iPhone available any time soon, on the Apple store is it all delivered middle/end of October already.

The DI is a PITA, is the same gimmick solution of notch to hide a hole in the screen. What you write about notch today you’ll write about DI when finally also it died.
Meanwhile with DI EVERY NEW PRODUCT WITH NOTCH BECAME OBSOLETE (Mac, do you remember?).
Go straight on, ever entusiastic fan of a CDA that more concentrated on financial field than production one!

To be fair, 14 and 14+ both have last years CPU (and other features).
People upgrading would often look into the new one, which puts them in 14 Pro (max) territory.

Those who do not care for the newest tech and want a big apple phone may look into a 13 or 12pro max (used/refurbished/discounted).

It just means people are buying the pros ,which is what Apple always wanted
If that’s what’s happening, then it has to be because everyone wants to go to Dynamic Island 🏝 😂

I reckon once the non-Pro models are notch-free, then we’ll see a resurgence in sales…”You get an island. You get an island. Everybody gets as island!”

The mini shouldnt have been made as the “cheapest new iphone” with the 12 and 13. The niche market are mostly people who want the small iphone with the three best camera’s.. not the people who think give me the smallest because its the cheapest.
It wasn’t really much cheaper, and made significant compromises, especially the 12 mini.

iPhone iterations are coming too quickly and performance is starting to plateau. I think it’d be a good idea if they reconsidered their release schedule at this point. The old 18 month cycle was more effective to my mind

That's not really a valid argument, for the reason I mentioned in a previous post here. If Apple is going to substantially increase the prices on their products when the US dollar is strong, or euro is week - but never let the prices decrease when the currencies balance out again, then you eventually get really high prices over a given period of time.

That is exactly what has happened here in Europe, speaking as a Norwegian. Apple got greedy, period. I mean, how many hundreds of billions of dollars in your coffers is enough? At some point you're going to loose a significant part of the market, which might finally start to happen. Again, Apple products are a lot more expensive here in Europe.

Hardware revenue is cyclical right now and is leveling off if not declining as it is. Releasing devices/software "when it's ready" would hopefully smooth out that curve a bit.

Besides, Apple is transitioning towards Services as hardware is declining/leveling, so hardware sales and revenue will be a smaller portion of their balance sheet in the years to come.
Services requires continued sales of iPhones to gain new customers. iPhone is 50% of the US market and 25% of the Global market. Sales are increasing but much room for continued growth.

13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have already been discontinued.

Any leftover stock at Apple Stores will be sold out within days. At carriers, YMMV.
There are many possibillities to buy one even later. Even refurbished ;-)

No, it isn’t. I’m comparing the current US prices with the current Euro prices using the current exchange rate and current tax rates. The resulting net prices (i.e. without tax) are not the same. The Euro prices come out higher by more than 10%. With those prices, Apple is getting 10% more revenue in the EU than in the US for the same product.

Netherlands was used as an example so I will stick with that.

The price of the 128GB iPhone 13 Pro in the Netherlands last year was €950 excluding VAT, etc.
The price of the 128GB iPhone 13 Pro in the U.S. last year was $999 or about €849 (last year's exchange rate).

The price of the 128GB iPhone 14 Pro in the Netherlands this year is €1,091 excluding VAT, etc.
The price of the 128GB iPhone 14 Pro in the U.S. this year is $999 or about €994 (current exchange rate).

Factoring in the exchange rate alone, the price of the iPhone 14 Pro should've been even higher than it is.

While Apple does get more revenue in the Netherlands, it's not necessarily a new thing and is likely due to a variety of reasons including population/market size (Netherlands population is only around 17.4 million), different regional competition, buying habits, local requirements, etc.

I’d argue that you actually lose some screen real estate, because the pill cutout extends farther into the screen than the notch did, and the area above the cutout remains pretty much unused.

I actually forgot to get on last Friday at 5:00 AM to finish my 14P pre-order. When I was able to log on immediately at 8:30 AM and order 256GB purple 14P to arrive on launch day (no delay, no problem accessing store - shock and surprise😲), I wondered if general demand would be off this year. Not even sure I will keep, just checking out new features. Maybe just keep my 256 13P in sierra blue if 14P isn't really compelling? Not too pleased with $600 trade-in for my year-old phone (stealth price increase) and Esim only either.

Every single color and capacity of the 14 and 14 Plus will be available for delivery on their slated launch dates. It's almost insulting that they would dare recycle last years chip. The customer isn't as ignorant as they thought and that did not go unnoticed.
I can even find Pros in nearby stores, but Maxes are long gone. Think I saw a few right in the beginning.
