It will go under the display
I just don't see the technology being there to put all that under the display. A dot projector, flood illuminator, infrared camera? All shoved under a display each with their own custom way of emitting/receiving light in-between pixels covering them up at 460 ppi? You are talking about magic.

We have seen under display cameras before and it comes with serious compromises such as lower quality photos and visibly lower pixel density (screen door effect) over the camera area. I think getting these sensors into a slightly wider bezel is more likely given that the infrared camera doesn't have to be as high resolution as the standard camera. Face ID sensors crammed into a wider bezel and TrueDepth camera in a hole punch.

48 megapixels doesn’t necessarily mean 48 megapixels. Android phones for a while now have used a technique called pixel binning. This is a technique whereby the camera sensor’s pixels are programmed to work together as if they were one pixel and thus get the added benefits of larger pixels (ie: better light gathering, less noise). Typically it’s four pixels grouped together to form a single pixel on outpost, thus the resulting output from a 48 mp sensor using pixel binning would be a 12 mp image. This allows the camera to be somewhat flexible. In ideal light it can shoot up to the native 48 mp, or it can use digital zoom and output 12 mp cropped from the native 48 mp, or it can turn on pixel binning for better performance in low light.

The technology’s been around in the Android world for several years. Apple tends to adopt these technologies only when it feels they’ve matured enough for prime time so it’s likely they’re working on an implementation of this for iPhone.

My best guess is they've figured out a way to make faceID work behind the display by turning off those pixels momentarily. Then the hole punch is for the main camera to not compromise picture quality.

FaceID sucks since Covid.

A) do it does not. works great with my apple watch.

B) rumors say the new face ID would understand and unlock a person with a mask.

Problem solved.
Sounds like their plan worked out on you :D
w00t, Covid, FaceID, can't unlock? Buy this nice additional Apple Cuff that makes your Face great again.

My wife has an s21, I have an 11 pro. The hole punch is so much better than the notch. No contest.

Well, I've owned the iPhone X and 12 Pro and the notch doesn't bother me at all. I don't even think about it. I find it odd that some on this forum are so obsessed with it. I'm not talking about people who express a calm opinion about how they'd prefer no notch, but the people who are like "it's an abomination!" I find it hard to take those opinions very seriously, as they seem highly unbalanced. I mean, I don't like the design shown here for the "hole punch", but I wouldn't call it an "atrocity" or an "abomination" LOL!

I like Kuo, but honestly at this point I wish he would just shut up already. The 13 hasn’t even dropped yet.

tbh, that looks worse than a "notch" (and the notch doesn't bother me). The notch at least looks contiguous with the edges of the phone / bezel, whereas the "hole punch" just looks, well, like someone shot a hole through your screen.
Thank God apple doesn't take cue from comments like these. The hole punch is 1000x better than a notch. The only thing better than a hole punch would be completely under the screen with no notch or no notch at all but rather all the sensors at the top of the screen.

These comments are similar to "Samsung makes big phones and those are just too large to hold. I like 4" Apple phones" or "why would we want an OLED screen? LCD technology is soooo much better than OLED."

Just cause Apple didn't think of a particular technology first doesn't mean its bad. There are countless technologies that Apple copied and perfected.. let it copy and perfect the whole punch as well. It's a lot more elegant and modern looking than the notch.

It's really not that big of a deal, and you're reading WAY too much into my simple comment. But bully for you and your hole punch. It seems to mean a great, great deal to you 🤷‍♂️

Kuo, or anyone else outside Cupertino, won't know until release. They start these "rumors" just as clickbait to make money. They do NOT know. They are guessing - just like the rest of us.

The hole punch is ugly, simple as that.

"In terms of the proportion of shipments and average delivery time [...] iPhone 13 & mini are 50–55% and 0–2 weeks, respectively, both lower than iPhone 12 & mini’s 60–65% and 1–2 weeks. Therefore, the preorder demand for iPhone 13 & mini declines."

Even fewer consumers looking to pre-order the mini. No wonder Apple will delete the 5.4" model next year.
If they made a “13 mini pro” I’d be all over that thing like trump on stormy.

He doesn’t know. He‘s just spitballing but knows every time he vomits out a ‘research note’ all the rumor sites and Twitter will publish it.
Agreed. Still, a higher res. sensor is way overdue imo. 48 MP alone would be enough reason for me to upgrade from my 11 Pro next year.

Why doesn't anyone implement a periscope camera with the mirror tucked into the top edge above the screen?

(I mean like those telephoto cameras that mount at 90 degrees, not the dumb pop up cameras)

If you love the notch so much I'm sure a software notch can be done

Image quality still suffers significantly from under display camera. Apple isn’t going to do it until it can be done right.

i think the keyboard fiasco put to bed the myth that Apple does it right.

i just don't get why to quote his crap again?
just few days ago, w/o any deeper thinking or consideration you quoted him, that 13 will have satellite comms :))))
why again?
he's compromised!

Turning off pixels might limit light leakage and interference into the sensors, but it doesn't solve the problem that with an OLED panel, the pixels are still a physical barrier wether they are illuminated or not.

Apple revolutionized how to unlock phones with FaceID, so several years from now they’re only going to go a hole punch design all other manufacturing has been doing for years. If they haven’t gotten it right the last 2 years, and say it’s coming 2 years from now… For all these years that’s all Apple is working on?
