Maybe Apple will release a software update and limit peak performance to manage the temperature.

My wife's 15PM is like a camp fire at times on extended phone calls, and her battery life is terrible. This morning she charged to 100% and when she got home from work (10 hours later) is was at 42% battery life, she said normal use through out the day.

Not expectable Apple
How is this terrible battery.. that puts the phone’s total battery at 18-19 hours to 0% which is amazing

Alloys of aluminum possess high thermal conductivity of 210 W/m-K compared to titanium with 17.0 W/m-K. Certainly doesn’t help, and definitely doesn’t inspire confidence in the AAA games that the iphone is meant to be running soon.

I’m getting the 15 plus😅

Do you guys realise that if the phone feels hotter than means it has better heat dissipation, not worse?

Having said that, iPhone 15 pro with apple case, I haven't felt any heat whatsoever, in fact every time I pick it up feels incredibly cool.

This doesn’t really suggest that at all.

Glass has terrible thermal conductivity, and so does titanium, when compared to aluminium.

Despite this, given enough time and energy you can still heat up materials like glass and titanium to a temperature as hot as any other material.

These 15 pro’s could potentially be cooking themselves inside.

Not an iOS 17 thing? Sure? Because alot of the older iPhones are running hot since the iOS 17 upgrade.

My 12 and 13 pro are running cool as always.

But I do suspect iOS 17 might be going extra hard on the initial data indexing when people transfer their files to the new phones - which could be part of the reason why people are seeing these issues now and why they may get better as time goes on.

Just got it and waited to charge until it went to 3%, and for 3% to 100% on a Belking QI charger (5w or 7.5w max) it was incredibly hot, I didn’t put any case yet, i wanted to charge it slowly for the first 3 cycles, so I was surprised to see how hot it was.

I was worried so I plugged the usbc cable on an old Samsung adapter and it went much colder.

I will never charge on a qi again with this one.

Tomorrow I will try MagSafe, but my « old » iphone 13 was getting slightly hot on MagSafe so I hope it will be ok.

I am not surprised to see news about heat issues but I hope I didn’t break the battery with that much heat day one…

Also I forgot to say my battery went down VERY FAST, I never experienced this even after a new sync with my old iPhones …

Tomorrow will be my day 2 I will tell you what happens then..
How hot did it get? Mine only went up to 36.8 C on a MagSafe charger.

Can’t personally say I’ve come across any overheating issues with my 15PM. Sucks to hear that others are though! Hopefully Apple can fix this ASAP.

"Small" sized iPhone 15 Pro here coming from a 13 Pro.

Can't objectively say how much warmer it is, also because I used my 13 Pro with a case and my 15 Pro is "naked".

I do notice it's getting quite warm when charging with a >=20 watts charger or MagSafe, but I'd say it's pretty similar to my 13 Pro.

I did run the new 3DMark stress test with ray tracing while charging the device, and sure, the device gets pretty toasty and thermal throttles a good 20% down from the peak performance, but that's probably the worst case scenario I can create (unless it was very hot outside and I'd place the phone in direct sunlight). It doesn't burn my skin or anything, but it's not very comfortable to hold. Subjectively previous iPhones can get to similar levels of heat, but I didn't do any direct comparisons or scientific measurements.

I also think any judgement people trying to make can be somewhat influenced by the topic blowing up a lot. It seems to get 2-3 degrees hotter on the outside than previous models from what I saw.

We'll see if and how Apple reacts to this. They might adjust power/temperature curves or even voltage curves if the chips can handle it, or most likely simply release a statement that this is "normal" or "expected" behavior.

These issues are mainly with instagram and it's not just on iPhone 15 Pro's, the same issues are happening on 14 Pro's,
That's why it's only happening to some and not everybody.
So, stop using instagram it's not the iPhone issue !
I use Instagram on my 14 pro max with ios 17 and absolutely no heat or overheating at all....

Great. After deliberating between the S23 Ultra and the 15PM, my wife and I opted to preorder the 15PM. Looks like that was the wrong decision.

Ahhh, just the sort of issues that waiting for the new year will let you base a reasonable decision on.

Could be one more year with the Xr.

Will be interesting to see the use cases that cause such heat, after having a Surface Pro 1 years ago that was hot from just simple tasks like web browsing and mail reading.

This is the Star Trek Conundrum: As you trot down the hall with your all-conquering phaser on your hip, you're potentially one trip and fall away from blowing a hole in the side of the ship when you crack the 'battery' in the thing.

So iphone 16 ultra will have the best cooling system in an iphone ever. And the next gen 3nm N3E will be the most power efficient and coolest SOC ever.

I am glad I have the 14 Pro Max, got it at Costco for $999 with Apple Care Plus, coming from the S23 Ultra. I had debated on the 15 Pro Max, saved $400 and no heating issues. 🤑 I dodged a bullet on that one.

...

Thanks for a useful, qualitative description of your experience.

I always keep my phone and other 'portables' (e.g., Surface Pro, iPad, Surface Go) in a 'medium use' case, cuz Experience, and the issue I have is in the thermal dissipation with that extra layer on.

As I've noted, the first few Surface Pros were known as flame throwers, and I hope/doubt Apple would be so clueless as to release a similar hot brick.

I'll just have to be content with some far simpler and less expensive toys for the holidays when issues like this and other 'unknown unknowns' crop up in the near term.

Same here. Glad me and my wife didn't upgrade from our 14 Pro's.

I dunno.

1. 15 has better reception than my 14P had.
2. Far cooler - 14P wouldn't overheat but would run warm quite often; my 15 has been cool as a cucumber.
3. Far lighter than the 14P. :)
