I'll bet they will build in some very compelling AI features which will only work on new AI hardware, the Live Translation app the S24 has comes to mind. Gotta have something to keep users buying new hardware, and it looks like AI is that something this round.

AI is nothing but a marketing term for things that have existed for ages. The iPhone already has tons of AI just like every other phone has for the last decade. Siri has been AI from the start, the camera does tons of AI since ages, IOS does tons of AI stuff all the time.

We just didn't call it AI, because there's NO reason whatsoever to specifically call it AI.

Hahahah!... It's called ML (Machine Learning), and ML API has been around for several years already.
In this case, AI has become a cliché name for an internet Bot. It's not built into the phone, it needs the internet to work. So every single query you do goes to the internet and someone is keeping track of it.

What Apple wants to do, is to built an AI bot into their devices and avoid internet dependency as much as possible.
Recently they discovered a way to store information is a fraction of space commonly used. So while they may be late to the show, they will get a big spotlight. Same as with the Vision Pro, just wait until Friday and you will see.

Regarding the design of the iPhone, imo this is the best design so far, it started with the iPhone 4. Later they tried changing it with the iPhone 6, but finally returned to this design. It's the best for the antenas too.
I would say: if it works great, don't change it, don't try to fix what's not broken.
But there's always a chance Apple may surprise us in the future with a new design we didn't expect to see.

I guess I'll ride my 13 Pro into the sunset.

I still love mine and it’s still like brand new since I had it replaced under AppleCare not long ago.

However I am considering the upgrade this fall. I really want improved Siri and I don’t hate some of the changes they made with the 15. The edges on this 13 Pro are like razors.

Also I like to upgrade before my old one is completely worn out to give to family members to ward off Android.

Dangit

Integrated AI would (presumably) be a pretty big deal to upgrade to. Ti chassis really isn't for the small weight savings.

I wonder if the 11 Pro will hold out for another 2 years... 😕 I really haven't actually wanted for anything with the 11's especially as post-pandemic I travel with the phones much less often, and they just spend most of their time chilling near the entrance, plugged in.

The larger displays come with the Pro models, the regular iPhone 16 -according to leaks and rumors- is going to maintain the same dimensions as the iPhone 15.

However, the regular iPhone 17 is expected to be even larger, and I really hope that at that point, Apple offers us a smaller iPhone. I’m not saying a mini sized iPhone, but at least something in the realm of the 5.8” to 6”. Otherwise, I’ll be stuck with my SE3 forever…

I plan to keep my SE3 for quite a while as well.

Not surprising. Apples innovation has all gone into the Vision Pro. Theyve been redoing the same phone for years
A phone is a phone is a phone is a phone. What do you suggest for a new design?

A foldable phone is a flip phone with two displays.
At least Apple had the guts to be the first ones who got rid of the classic phone look, and eliminate the physical keyboard, replacing it with a display with a great tactile feeling, unlike the HP iPad or the Palm Pilot that felt as if the display was bending (same feeling with Samsung's foldable phone; it feels like those cheap displays).

Kuo is a supply chain guy. He has little insight into software and the internals of Apple devices. He was the one who said Apple would release an M2 iMac and not an M3 as they did. He also projected Apple Vision Pro sales of 70 to 80,000, and now we know that it was closer to 200,000. When he can check supply channels, he can be fairly accurate. When he is extrapolating from rumors he is no better than anyone else on this site. The exciting part about the new iPhone will not be with outside, but what’s inside.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath and take this for what it is: classic Apple PR tutti-frutti, phoney-baloney, plastic banana, good time, rock-n-roll "leaks" to build hype. These Apple PR "leaks" always suggest that Apple is so bleeding edge yet striving for perfection that, golly gee-whiz, they just can't get these new features to be ready in time for the fall, but stay tuned, because they are coming soon. The reality is that the iPhone 16 design is already locked-in, the iOS 18 features are already determined, and the iPhone 17 design is already in advanced development. Apple is a master at the product pipeline, which means they plan these things out years in advance, so they can maintain profit with yearly iterations.

I couldn't resist upgrading from my 14Pro Max to the 15 - so I guess: bigger screen it is

I could see this news being compatible with Apple implementing a LAM like the Rabbit R1. Large Action Models rely more on CPU than GPU, so the iPhone wouldn't really need a spec bump to accomplish this. But I don't know that Apple has the experience/expertise to catch up to Rabbit for iOS 18.

But the lack of a GPU spec bump for iPhone 16 doesn't look good for running inference. A real AiPhone would have a great LLM to understand what the user wants and a LAM to act on it. That probably won't happen until iPhone 17 at the earliest. That leaves this iPhone 13 Pro user a bit in no man's land.

Would be truly innovative and magical if Apple skipped a year and slowed down the cadence of their iPhone upgrades. Seems like they are stuck in a yearly upgrade cycle for no other good reason than to appease the board.
Every customer is on a different upgrade cycle. Most people want a recent phone not one already 12 months old when it’s their time to upgrade. It’s a mature product category
