Apple is falling behind in design when it comes to the hardware and UI, same bloody layout for years, same iOS layout since v1 and not a lot of changes since the IOS7 redesign. At least come up with something more refreshing.

Any new display size IS a significant design change.

Not really, if a car company brought out a new model that was identical as the previous one and all they did was increase the front window size by a small amount that is not a significant design change, a significant design change is a whole new body design.

Still, Apple will tell you how it is the best iPhone they've ever made
which means nothing, when you take technological advancement into account. If you talk about aesthetics, it hasn’t been the best for years.

Same. I have a 13 Pro, but it's showing its age with the battery life. I don't know if a pill cutout and a "Dynamic Island" are enough to make me want to spend $1100 on a new phone...

I'm in the same boat but my 13 Pro's battery capacity just hit 80%. I'm lined up for an upgrade.
battery replacement is below $100

Externally, what could they even do to change the design that’s not change for the sake of change?
We’ve had 15+ years of annual iteration and refinement of this product that has led to what is essentially as flawless a form factor as they can make.
I’d slice off the camera hump, which I’m sure they’d do too if they could. But otherwise?
Foldable. Different materials - something soft or grippy for a change. Different camera hump (e.g. look at the elegant solution of the pixel phones). A smaller/lighter form factor.

I wouldn’t call it ”flawless” with that hump, sharp edges, slippery material, big weight and huge footprint (although a lot of people like big phones - personally I want to have a phone in the front pockets of my jeans without it sticking out). If it were flawless, nobody would need a case or have broken glass backs/front. I’d say the 5s was as good as it got, maybe the 7 for different tastes, but has been downhill from there.

In all honesty, the current iPhone Pro Max is a pretty perfect device. There can only be minor changes every year because it's difficult to improve on a device that is and does what the iPhone does. Go back in your head to 2007 and remember the mess that existed in phones. Go back even further to just remember how good it was just to have a mobile phone. Technology is amazing and there will continue to be innovation but expecting an overhaul of the iPhone every few years isn't realistic anymore.

I don't mind these small changes each year, as I don't upgrade each time.

When I upgrade my iPhone 11, there will be lots of little improvements for me to look forward to.

I've recently gone caseless after 4 years. I forgot how nice my white 11 looks, and now it seems like a new phone to me. That'll wear off soon, though. The 16 could be the one!

AI is nothing but a marketing term for things that have existed for ages. The iPhone already has tons of AI just like every other phone has for the last decade. Siri has been AI from the start, the camera does tons of AI since ages, IOS does tons of AI stuff all the time.

We just didn't call it AI, because there's NO reason whatsoever to specifically call it AI.
AI/Artificial Intelligence has changed so much over the years. A few `if statements` that would say "hi" if you said "hello" used to be considered AI. Now computers can write music, create photo realistic art, have conversation so real that you can't tell it's a computer, write papers, and etc. So "smart image processing" isn't the same as what Apple will want to call AI. There has been a reason Apple hasn't used "AI" as a marketing term, there are either saving it for what AI is being used for today(ChatGPT, Bard, etc), or probably have a new term for it (most likely knowing Apple) and they will never call it AI. example: VR/AR called Spacial Computing.

just pay the 89$ for a brand new battery..... if thats the only issue.

It's the only real issue I have with this phone, otherwise it works just fine. But I don't upgrade for reasons like that alone. I'm like anyone else: I like to have the latest and greatest. But there has to be enough of a change to make me want to upgrade. I'll find out in the fall.

Yes it is. I weigh all the new features since my current model against my current phone's features and battery capacity. I'm at 80% now and the 16 Pro will have three years of new features. Upgrading the battery will just be delaying the inevitable.

I wonder if we'll ever get a smaller form factor again..

(I'm an SE1 and now Mini13 user)

Maybe somewhere in the future SE lineup we could get something that isn't the size/weight of a patio paver in your pocket?
