Agreed. This doesn't make much sense.

Doesn’t make sense for those of us who want a 4 inch phone. It does make sense for Apple to have a low end phone they can sell for 2-3 years. This literally what happened back in 2016 with the original SE.

This supposed SE2 will outlast the 8 in terms of software updated - just like the SE1 has outlasted the 5S.

That’s going to be a monster for sales at that price point.
No doubt. An iPhone 8 body with A13 CPU for $400? I can only assume the iPhone 8 gets discontinued at that point? Because it starts at $450 right now and would immediately become pointless.

Yeah, but I think Apple is misunderstanding the interest in the SE. It's about size, not price. People who buy based on price are buying used or refurbished.

Take the exact same case, stuff it with the latest components, and I'll buy one even if it's not cheap. But just making a cheaper iPhone 8 is not the same as making a new SE.

Apple is planning on releasing an iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of 2020 and starting at a $399 price point, according to the latest research report from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo goes into more detail about the expected specs of the so called "iPhone SE 2" in the latest research note obtained by MacRumors. Specs for the new low-end iPhone are said to include:
[*]A13 CPU (same as iPhone 11)[*]3GB LPDDR4X[*]64GB and 128GB options[*]Space Gray, Silver and Red colors[*]No 3D TouchKuo expects the new iPhone SE 2 will be a popular upgrade option for existing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S owners.

Despite being referred to as a "iPhone SE 2" by Kuo, the analyst expects the form factor of Apple's new budget iPhone to be similar to the iPhone 8.

If it has wireless charging and water resistance like the current iPhone 8 does I will probably trade in my pixel 3 for it. It wouldn't make much sense to keep a glass back and not offer those features right? Pixel is nice but I do miss the stability of iOS and iOS 13 is pretty great. Apple chips also don't have much competition for speed. The a13 is said to be the best on the market now, even the a12 is still a beast. I also really like the 8 design and touch ID.

Ugh.
If I wanted an iPhone 8 shaped phone I could go buy one right now

An iPhone 8 size/shape totally misses the point of the iPhone SE and why so many of us love it like no other.

The small form factor is the key
If rumors are true, Apple is clearly positioning iPhone SE 2 as entry level iPhone with as much of the latest components as possible.

iPhone SE 2 vs. iPhone 8:
  • $50 cheaper
  • Latest A13 processor vs. 2 year old A11
  • 3GB RAM vs. 2GB RAM
  • Haptic Touch vs. 3D Touch (3D Touch is very neutered on iOS 13 anyway)
  • No mentioned but I am guessing latest improved camera lenses (although probably just a single rear camera)

We don't want a new iPhone 4.7. When the SE came out, 4.7 was the middle and most popular size option, and the goal of the SE was to have something smaller than that. A rebranded 8 with new specs is NOT an SE 2. Unless it's 4" or has a footprint close to the SE, it's a joke to those that really want a small phone.

After a few weeks with my iPhone 11 pro (not max), I've come to realize that the iPhone 6/7/8 is surprisingly small. Smaller in every dimension and especially in weight.

Thick bezels..... and a home button....in 2020....wtf

The price of wanting a "smaller" phone. It's only 5mm in height and 3mm in width down from the iPhone XS, so a similar size. But I would welcome a lighter phone. A 177g XS is a pain.

This new 'SE' is an option only if no smaller 5.4" Pro materialises next September.

There are several apps in the app store that approximate Night Mode. They work with phones as old as the 6 if I'm remembering correctly. It won't be as advanced as what most flagships currently offer, but hey something is much better than nothing.
Right; I’m referring strictly to Apple’s night mode feature.

This SE2 rumor at $400 will certainly not be monster sales. Modest at best, just like $400 SE.

Just a last gasp of air, at bargain basement price, for a now outdated form factor. Same as SE was for the previous, then equally outdated,
4” screen series.

If believe the SE2 rumor, the 8 is already pointless for new purchase.

If own 6-8 series, and love that form factor, don’t miss SE2 opportunity next year. It’ll be your last chance.

One thing doesn't quite add up.
iPhone 8 with A11 chip @ $449
Kuo says iPhone SE 2 in iPhone 8 body with A13 chip @ $399

Something's not right. Either it's going to cost more or it's not going to be in an iPhone 8 body.

I want a phone that is thin and small which also maximizes screen space.

Tried the iPhoneX and thought it was too thick, heavy, and big. Everybody except Apple seems to know what to create here...small size like SE, screen like X. Doesn’t have to be super cheap; make it mid-ranges and let cheapo ppl buy the iPhone8.

If they come out with some dumb iPhone8 repackaging I’ll be holding on to my iPhone7 for a bit longer then I guess. I used to be able to count to Apple to be obsessed with thin and light designs...everything after the 7 got fat and heavy.
They realized battery life was more important to most people.

Sell 250 then it will sold, dont care either it was a10 or a11. its a phone so i want to call and whatsapp simple
Why would you want an iPhone to do that? Get the cheapest android phone possible.

For me it was about size but I think those of us who care about size aren’t apple’s target group.

From Apple’s perspective, in terms of offering a low end phone with big margins that will last for several years, if this proposed SE 2 happens it is the same as the original SE.

If the camera is the same as my XS, this will be my pocketable, second phone for travel. Of course therefore the form factor must be SE w/o compromise!

Camera: The SE was not stingy in camera and processor at that time. That was certainly an important reason for its big success.

The original SE was cheaper than the 5S was under the 5S/6/6S range despite having the camera and processor of the 6S.

This phone will be all about bringing people into the apple ecosystem so they spend on apple services.

You underestimate how many people don't care about full screen phones, and as such will see the tremendous value in a $400 IPhone 8 body, with the latest CPU.

Had this been an option when I got the 11, I would have strongly considered it at $300 less. Same A13 CPU, lesser camera (probably). The 11 isn't $300 better to me than an 8 with A13.
