Saw the Xs MAX on display at my local Target. Wow, that gold color looks really nice! But is it me, or do display models look much nicer at the Apple store than Target or other places? Lighting perhaps? Also, it had this big old plier-like security clamp so couldn't see much of the gold, but it did look really nice

Assuming there are no antenna/reception issues, I am going to predict that Xs max will outsell Xr as well

Anecdotal but I personally happen to know a whole lot of people (mostly women) who are pretty pissed at Apple for only making large devices now. For me the perfect device would be the 4.7" iPhone size without the bezel extension. So an iPhone X design that is basically 16:9, or maybe slightly taller so you can watch videos without the notch. Or rather the true perfect device would be 4.7" 16:9 with no notch, but that is a ways off.

I agree with this. While I see endless amounts of younger women preferring the Plus devices, women in more professional and mature settings bring on quite the complaint about carrying around a piece of Apple bullion.

My wife and I are both on X's since last years release after previously having the 7Plus. One of the thing I liked about the X verses the 7Plus was the smaller size of the phone while having essentially the same size screen as the 7Plus. That's one of the reasons I'm gonna keep using my X for at least another year even though in the past I have been an annual updater.

More proof that people prefer the bigger phone. Especially since the X had a smaller screen than the 8 plus in actual usable real-estate.

Exactly. When some were whining that “nobody wants a phone over 3.5 or 4 inches” it was clearly wrong. People swore larger phones would not sell.

Even in mexico then (and now) people buying cheap phones went for large cheap ones. I really don’t see the market go back to mini phones no more than back to small tv’s...unless either are built inro glasses or something.

I went fron a larger android (galaxy s4 I think) to the 5 and hated the size. Went to the 6s plus and still have it. Would like to go to the max even after swearing no more iphones. I will have to walk that back in a few months for a max.

I’m just the opposite of the small phone users. I don’t see the point of a tiny phone. The 6s plus fits in my jeans pocket sideways so that argument (doesn’t fit in pockets) is ridiculous unless you wear hipster shinny’s or baby close.

No, I don’t wear baggy. Just normal jeans the style I gave worn for decades.

I just don't think there are large enough differences between the x and xs for most to justify an upgrade, particularly at these price points. You can find a used x 65gb around the $500 price point, so effectively you're paying almost $500 additional for the better camera in the x.

IMO, Apple is trying to make too many models and colors to please too many people, leading to shortages of all models. The XR is unnecessary, and even the XS is questionable, though on that one, Apple may not be able to predict so many wanted the bigger phone. But then throw in the XR, and all those colors, and you are sucking up all of the capacity trying to make all these various models.

If I were ole Tim Cook, I would, well, buy a yacht and my own jet first. Then I would have made the XS and XS Max, 256GB and 512GB options, and the three colors they have are. Forget the 64GB and the XR entirely. Simplify.
So a $999 option and a $1099 option and nothing else? Average people buy based on price. You start all your new phones at $999 and you alienate a ton of people. The Xr looks to be a great phone and gives people the choice of color. If anything they should just reduce the number of storage options.
64GB and 256GB for the Xr.
128GB and 512GB for the Xs/Max.

Great. So not only has Apple killed the iPhone SE, but they're going to end up killing the iPhone XS 5.8" size for not being popular enough. We'll all just walk around with 12.9" iPhone Ultra's strapped to our faces in 10 years. Am I the only one sick and tired of the giant phone craze?

Totally agree. The huge phones look stupid and vulgar but in a way, isn't that how the mainstream have become?
A few YouTubers have reviewed both phones this weekend and most come to the conclusion that the Max is way too big and that the XS is a far better size.
Also this report does not show demographics etc. What is popular in the US is most definitely not popular in France or Italy. Hence there will always be a market for the SE size phone etc. Personally, I'd love a 4.8 / 5.1 iPhone XS OLED.

I don't expect this to be the case at all. I just don't think there's a large enough difference between the x and xs thisbyear. Couple that with the price point of these devices and it's a much less attractive buy.

Surprised so many people are opting for the 512 gb model though. What are they storing on it?

There are a lot of countries out there, many do not have stable data or good internet. Everything is stored on the phone. It may surprise you that there are many places in the us like that still.

It’s a big world out there.

Average people 1. Don't buy Apple 2. Don't often spend 1K on a phone!
I study demographics and the 'average' person is more likely to buy a Samsung phone (having seen this in certain small northern cities) as opposed to the professional who buys the iPhone (London 9 out of 10 with iPhones).

The iPhone X has a larger screen than the plus phones.
In diagonal measurement yes, in actuality no. The iPhone X / Xs screen is slightly taller (ignoring the rounded corners), but quite a bit more narrow than the Plus, and the same width of the iPhone 6 / 6s / 7 / 8 non-Plus. The difference is enough to make it a downgrade.

The iPhone X has a 5.8" screen. The 7 Plus has a 5.5" screen.

As many have pointed out, in real world use, this was never true. The X has an effectively smaller screen than any of the Plus models due to
1) How narrow the screen is
2) The notch

The MAX corrects both of these - the screen is as wide as the Plus models, while the increased length of the screen reduces the impact of the notch.

Sad for those like me who prefer the X/XS form factor - means it'll likely be gone in a generation or two.

Why? Apple will clearly keep making "regular" X/Xs size phones for years. It's good to have a variety of phone options in the lineup.

This is interesting. I went from an 8 Plus to the XS for the smaller size. Before that, I had the 6 Plus.

I had avoided the X just because I wanted to see how the OLED and no home button worked out year one.

I'm not saying it isn't correct, just that I'm stunned. I just can't imagine that huge phone that needs two hands outsells the XS by 3-4x's. Perhaps it is a one off this year since few upgraded from the X and you have a large number of holdouts from the 8 Plus and earlier getting the bigger phone they wanted? I'm surprised.
I think it's exactly that. I would guess that ...

1. those who splashed out for an X last year are still satisfied with it?
2. those who waited with a Plus for another big phone jumped on the Max?
3. a lot of people might be waiting for the R?
4. an SE2 (small phone with iPhone 8 guts) could be coming in Spring 2019?

I was on a "nothing wrong with it" iPhone 8 and am still getting used to the bigger and heaver Xs. I've read that the Max is just the same, only bigger -- most apps don't even show more information, just larger text, so I'm happy with my choice.

It seems inconceivable that Apple would leave the low-end/small-screen market to Android. But is it at all likely that we'll see TouchID in a small phone after this fall's all-X lineup?

Could that be the long-lost iPhone 9?

A lot of people here came from a Plus size to the X, as I did, and I was disappointed in the size of the phone. It felt tiny and didn't feel natural to me. I was happy that I got the XS Max, that I don't see myself upgrading for the next few years. I'm not surprised it's outselling the others since it's more popular and preferred. Contrary to what most here say, the Max is just the right size. Others like the one handed convenience of a small phone, others like the bigger landscape to play games when I'm bored, or watch Netflix at Starbucks. It all depends on how you use your phone and what you prefer. It's the perfect size, the perfect phone for me, and apparently, for a lot of people as well.

The iPhone X has a 5.8" screen. The 7 Plus has a 5.5" screen.
It should be bigger. But in reality the X’s display seems smaller to the (/my) eye. Someone made a are some cases the X would display considerably less content (I think it was movies without the notch).

No surprise. If you are going to get a XS, may as well get the Max for an extra $100. The Xr will likely be the best seller, but the XS Max ain’t no slouch itself.

Surprised so many people are opting for the 512 gb model though. What are they storing on it?

They aren't. From the quoted article:
256GB is the most popular, and 512GB is subject to a serious shortage because only Samsung can currently ship NAND Flash well.

That is, unless your comment is curious why people need 512GB to begin with... then that's a whole different question.

Note that the ratio of Plus vs 'standard' iPhones has been rising every year over the first four generations of Plus iPhones (6, 6s, 7, 8). That in addition to Plus holdouts from last year, ie, those that would have gotten a X 'Plus' last year if it had existed, the existence of the Xr which makes the Xs look less of a good deal, and the lack of blowout improvement in the Xs (ie, annual buyers that got the X last year that wanted a clear buzz) are factors that would have indicated an increased Plus/Max share. The absolute price (not the $100 premium over the Xs) however would have been a countervailing factor (though without knowing the absolute sales numbers, a high ratio could also be due to abysmal sales of the Xs).

No. the 7 and 7+ are still available from Apple
There are multiple definitions of 'new models'. One is models that can be bought as new (as in unused and only recently manufactured). The other is models that got released recently.

In Asia bigger phones tends to sell a lot better than the small ones, and given most iPhone X users aren't buying the Xs, it isn't surprising those who hold out for Xs Max are making the headlines.

Yes, lots of women at my work, and even a couple guys (including one who was recently an intern and joined after graduating, so like 23 years old). My wife and a few of her friends (range early to mid 30s) also don't like it. My boss is in her 40s and has a 6S Plus and doesn't really like it and is looking to move down in size as well but doesn't like how much the smaller X costs so she is likely going to settle on the XR whenever it comes out, which is only a little smaller.
