Much to my chagrin, I feel like this is just another nail in the coffin of an iPhone SE successor.

Guess I'll just have to suck it up and deal with owning an obnoxiously huge phone when time comes for me to upgrade in 18 months or so.

Assuming there are no antenna/reception issues, I am going to predict that Xs max will outsell Xr as well
It’s definitely not going to happen. Xr will outsold by far Xs max. The only reason why Xs max outsold Xs is that people are waiting for Xr.

I I just can't imagine that huge phone that needs two hands outsells the XS by 3-4x's.

I also wanted to point out, as someone who has rather large hands, the Plus size/XS Max phones are very comfortable for me.

I like the fact that Apple is offering a variety of sizes this year. The XR is going to be a great in-between size when it comes out.

Surprised so many people are opting for the 512 gb model though. What are they storing on it?
Self-shot 4K video would be one thing. One hour is 10 GB, shoot 20 hours and you've probably filled up all the free space of the 256 GB model after all the other categories (OS, apps, etc.). I already have 100 GB of photos and videos on my 256 GB device (though that is more raw files than video).

Am surprised as well. I don't like what Apple (Tim) will interpret from this: "we can charge whatever price we want, and they'll keep buying our stuff"! $2k phones next year? What's the limit for the iPhone market?

This isn't how Tim will interpret this. This is how it is, and they will keep increasing price until sales start to slow. If people are willing to pay high prices, then they believe that its worth that value. So until people stop seeing the value in the phone, Apple will continue to increase prices. If I had company that sold millions of products, then found out that I could keep increasing the price and the demand doesn't fall, I would.

A few more things

1) The XS seems like kind of a bad deal for X owners, many of whom probably got their phones in October or November. The performance of the phone will likely be exactly the same. The cameras are upgraded from an already great camera. FaceID and gestures are similar. For those customers, the much better play is to wait for new 2019 iphones

2) If you had a SE-7 phone, the XS doesn't seem to offer that much over the X. So you already passed up the X once - these owners are likely waiting for the XR

3) However, for Plus phone users, the MAX is pretty much what they were waiting for. Honestly a MAX sized phone should have been released last year with the original X.

my hands aren't huge but I can fully use my X and now XS one handed. some of the rarer reaches to the far upper corner is a slight stretch but I still do it one handed without fear of dropping the phone. Without question I would need two hands to fully use a MAX.
I had the plus phones and used them with two hands. When I got the X, I had forgotten how nice it was to be able to use a phone with 1 hand. I went to the Apple Store yesterday for a watch and decided to try out the Max. Within 10 seconds I remembered how bad the 2 hand experience is for a phone for me.

How much you wanna bet apple had that size lined up all along. They just didn’t release it to bring those + owners buying the x back again the following year to buy the max model. It makes total sense to maximize $$$

This is the first "plus/max" phone I've had that doesn't feel that way. Yes, the display is big and beautiful, but no, it doesn't actually feel bulky and too big. I honestly think the XS would have seemed too small. I'm surprised that the Max is this easy to use actually. So far - love it!

Yup shows that Apple buyers are richer than the average consumer and that those complaining about price are wrong. These phones are the Benz's not the Honda for the masses. I believe we will see a time when an iPhone model is more expensive than a Mac.

Who is buying these!? Seriously, it is all rich Chinese people? This is the first year that an Apple phone has simply become unaffordable to me, so ho the 256 and 512gb Xs Max are the most popular is beyond me! Oh, and WHY would so many people want such a large phone is beyond me too. Most ppl use phones for taking pics, using the internet, phone, text and a bit of youtube. No need for a HUUUUUGE screen to watch movies on... who does that!? I just want one 1 can use with one hand and that comfortably fits in my pocket.

Movies, pictures, musics, etc. iCloud is good if there is an internet connection. Free WiFi is nice but very risky to use due to the lowest internet security with the highest hacking risk. Never too much to have extra space to accommodate many needs offline.

Who the hell is watching a movie on a mobile phone. That's ridiculous.

No one really should be surprised by this since the the Xs is an incremental upgrade to the X. I imagine the Xs Max are selling like hot cakes.

This is my theory. one reason I didn't want an iPhone X was that the screen was smaller than my 7 Plus. No way in hell I was going to go to a smaller screen!

The XS Max is more my style; I want one but it's expensive so it has to wait.
The screen isnt smaller its just the form factor an screen ratio which is 19.5:9 is different to the iPhone 7/8 plus which had a screen ratio of 16.9

Great. So not only has Apple killed the iPhone SE, but they're going to end up killing the iPhone XS 5.8" size for not being popular enough. We'll all just walk around with 12.9" iPhone Ultra's strapped to our faces in 10 years. Am I the only one sick and tired of the giant phone craze?

THIS THIS AND THIS AGAIN. No doubt in my mind in a fwe years the trend will reverse and people will be demanding smaller phones again. Just a shame they've completely abandoned the 'normal ' sized phones for these monsters. Even the XR is huge.

So much misguided information out here on the comments today, let me just throw out some facts:

- The X/XS screen is larger than that of the Plus models diagonally, but has appreciably less total screen area. Aside from color/contrast, 16:9 video is far better on the Plus' screen because it provides an exact fit with no notch.

- The XS Max is marginally shorter, narrower, thicker, and heavier than the Plus models. However, the differences are so small that they feel nearly the exact same, even side-by-side.

This makes sense to me. Many of us who wanted the new design updated to the X last year. Those who like the form factor didn't have much reason to go to the XS, where as the market that prefers the larger size had more incentive to upgrade after one year. So to really know the appeal of the 5.8 inch size you need to look at last year's sales data too.

Hopefully Apple realizes this and won't infer that no one wants devices that aren't phablets. I would hate if the smallest available phone sizes in the future are > 6 inches.

I don’t care what haters say i love my iPhone XS MAX ,it was a great upgrade form iPhone X ...It does everything, better sound, better camera, better screen and i can see that much better phone reception .What else are u expecting from a phone ? Scramble eggs for u or something like that ?
