I have to see it in-person and maybe have a week of using it to know for sure. I am open to the idea, some of the naysayers will dismiss it now and when it’s released will chant its the best device ever. Same song with anything new.

Apple sell cases too smart-ass, and they all have the power button covered. And, unfortunately, they pull the strings as to whether something gets implemented or not.
Touche, let me rephrase; gosh we can't possibly make Apple re-engineer their $15 cases can we?

You don’t have to buy it. Are you concerned that if Apple does release it this will prove once again that they are many years behind the competition?

I think it's just fashionable to trash foldable phones, especially if you have zero experience with them. Just watch, when Apple releases theirs they will be the first sheep to proclaim Apple's brilliance.

iPad Air 4 and mini 6 case manufacturers and even Apple’s cases have figured it out, what’s your argument?
different form factor for one.
2nd, everything is "swipe up", so my thumb never is close to the power button anymore.
and Apple has not (thus far) added a Touch ID into a device that has Face ID

Kuo: “Touch ID coming back in iPhone 12”

Me: “interesting”

Kuo: “Touch ID being tested for it’s implementaron on iPhone 13”

Me: “Woah, at last, after this two years of pandemic, was about time”

Kuo: “Touch ID coming back in 2023”

Me: “Ok, whatever. I’m gonna get the 13 and use the passcode”
SPOT ON!!!!!!!!
I am just like you:)
Have iPhone 11 Pro, do not have any passcode or FaceID, but will get iPhone 13 Pro and will use a passcode. Maybe one day, 2031 we will get touch id:)

What problems do foldables solve? The footprint is smaller when they are folded, obviously, but then they are twice as thick. They protect the screen when it is folded but the screens themselves seem less durable than regular screens. Are there scenarios where information presented on a folded device is better than on a standard phone?

I do like the look of the Motorola foldable, though. Interested to see what Apple does.

Why does everyone forget cases can be redesigned to have the power button exposed, just like the old screen protectors had a cutout for the old Touch-ID?

Am I just "old" and remember too much? I mean seriously...
If that was the direction Apple was going, they would have done it already. So for whatever Apples' rational is, they don't want to put touch id in the power button of the iphone.

Wow I still am baffled that this question is still asked, I suppose it's a physics brain buster. The problem they solve is that of having a tablet sized screen which can fit into the footprint of a smartphone. Here's an experiment for those who don't understand the physics involved, take an ipad mini 5 which has the same size screen as the Fold 2/3, take that ipad mini and put it into your front pocket, bonus points if you can sit down with it. Voila, instant scientific answer!

Apple can keep upping its iPhones with new form factors and faster CPUs, but I feel A15 and iPhone 12S (I mean 13), is incredible enough as it is, until the next big thing, whatever that is.

TouchID can into the power button like they’ve been doing so already.

Please, no foldable phones. We've spent years getting rid of troublesome fragile mechanical components in smartphones. The last thing I want is for phones to go back to that.
I agree — at some point, the screen will fail — there is just no way around it. Do we even know how a humid/dry or hot/cold climate affects this? It seems like a complete waste of r&d. A flexible screen material is great if it stays in one position, but bending a screen constantly is a disaster waiting to happen.

But you still have a device that is twice a thick and substantially heavier than most phones. Is there enough demand for a pocketable device like you describe? I guess we shall see.
