Apple's upcoming "Scary Fast" event will focus on the M3 series MacBook Pro models, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo's wording suggests that he is expecting multiple M3 chips rather than just a single M3 chip, hinting at the possibility of M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips.

If Apple does release M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips at once, we can expect to see the new chips introduced in 13-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

Kuo says that he previously predicted that Apple would not likely introduce new MacBook Pro models in 2023 because of "limited 4Q 23 shipments," and if new MacBook Pros do come out in November or December, the tight supply will last until the first quarter of 2024. Kuo further says that Mac shipments have declined due to the "limited M2 computing power upgrade," which may be the reason why Apple might launch M3 MacBook Pro models with low production volume.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also says that Apple has been testing M3 Max and M3 Pro MacBook Pro models, suggesting that these machines are going to be refreshed. Gurman just last week claimed that Apple would not update the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips until early 2024, so it seems that his predictions have since changed.

That Kuo and Gurman are both now suggesting that we'll see 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models at Apple's October event comes as a surprise because much of their prior information pointed toward a 2024 refresh for these devices.

Gurman maintains that Apple will not refresh the MacBook Air models, Mac mini, Mac Studio, or Mac Pro at this time, which leaves the iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro, 14-inch MacBook Pro, and 16-inch MacBook Pro for the October event. As Gurman has previously pointed out, these are the machines that are facing extended shipping times in Apple's online store.

According to Kuo, if the M3 models don't end up boosting MacBook shipments, there is an increased likelihood of an "all-new design MacBook Pro in 2025" and also a chance Apple will consider a "more affordable MacBook model."

I want shoping for a new computer with my 60+ year old sister. She knows zero about computers. I've been on the bussines fr a long time. It was fun to watch her. Looking at the way she uses her phone I thought she'd be the perfect person to own the entry-level Macbook air. But the first thing se saw in the store was an aluminum colord "Chromebook" that looked kind of like the Macbook but sold for about $225. She says "I want this one." It took some education but she did get the Mac.

I gave this story to show that most people know nothing about computers. What is a "CPU?" Ok maybe someone told them it is "the brain" but that is their level of understanding. But price tag? everyone knows what they mean. Price is "everything".

There is no reason Apple can't make a computer with a chomebook-like price tag.

I've actually used Chomebooks with students in a class I was teaching. They work well for most things, normal people want to do. Even the basic spec M1 Air is overkill for Web browsers, emails and on-line shopping. Even learning to write software in C++ or Python is a good use for a $250 Chomebook. Apple needs to expand their line into the low end. Maybe they offer a "discount" brand name but they could easily offer an under $500 computer.

Anyway, i wanna M10.. no one cares about the single digit M series. Double digit mega power

Bring us the M10 Maxi Pro Plus!!!

I’m not sure if anyone else has seen this but Forbes is saying that probably they will launch a MacBooK Pro with the M2 Ultra,

Why stop there?

along with the updated more efficient screen on the whole MacBook Pro line. They say it’s not probable that it will be the M3 Pro/Max chips for now.
I guess we’ll see!

It’s even less probable that the Ultra will make it into a laptop.

Man, those of you who are still on Intel Macs will be in for a treat with these M3 Macs! For those of you on M2 or M1, there really isn't any reason to upgrade to these....still...

Just wondering how you know I dont need to upgrade to M3?

I still have an intel Mac Mini and its fine! I also have an M2 Macbook Air and thats fine too

To be honest, for my light workload there is actually pretty much nothing in it for me… what i do appreciate for my Macbook Air however is the amazing battery life.

My intel Mac is actually doing amazing on Sonoma and i aint upgrading it for a long while yet. I know some people need the extra power, or the extra features catered for by Apple silicon, but for a lot of people, its redundant.

Just wondering how you know I dont need to upgrade to M3?
  • The fact that the event will be a live-streamed event at 5pm PT, which has never happened in Apple's history
  • The fact that the products announced will just be M3 version of the already announced 13-inch MacBook Pro, 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and iMacs with no design changes
  • the fact that there won't be any hands-on videos suggesting that all they will announce are spec-bumped products with the M3 replacing the M2 or M1 chips in these devices....

2006 had two - the initial Core Duo releases in January/February/April and the Core 2 Duo releases in October.
2011 had Early/Late but those were just spec bumps really.
2013 had Early 2013 which were spec bumps of the 2012s, then Late 2013 which moved CPU/GPU generations and saw *significant* battery life gains. Storage also moved to PCIe.
2019 had an update to the 15" in May, then it was replaced with the 16" in November.
2020 had the Intel 13" come out in May, then the lower-end model was replaced with the M1 in November.
Stop confusing the issue with facts

This the same leakers who said there wouldn’t be any more events for 2023? 😂

Can’t believe it’s an event at midnight till 2am! Gonna have to check MacRumours in the morning instead of watching it which is a shame.
For all Australians Apple events are usually at 4am…

Is it any coincidence that Apple may be forging ahead with the new unexpected m3 Pro/Max as a way to counteract today's announcement of Qualcomm's new laptop chip that they claim is not only twice as fast as the M2 Max, but also much more power efficient? I don't think it's a coincidence. I think releasing a new M series chip is Apple trying to rein in the buzz the Qualcomm chip is generating.

Damn, I just bought an M2 Max a couple weeks ago because I didn’t expect they’d be updating it in less than a year. What’s the best options here? I also already traded in my original laptop, so I can’t even go back to that temporarily.
you can probably trade it in or sell it on eBay. I have an M1 Max, and my MBP is running great! It's plenty fast. I can't imagine needing it to be any faster unless all you do all day is encode video. I'm sure Apple will sell it well, but at the end of the day, it will likely make little difference to how your Mac feels.

1. Apple plans these events well in advance, so I don't think this is counteracting Qualcomm

2. Qualcomm mentioned that the their new laptop chip is 2X faster than M2, not M2 Max and 30% more power efficient vs M2 Max when comparing peak performance.

I would also check out this thread by Max Weinbach

Unless you're doing something massively computationally intensive… id suggest your best course of action is to calm down and see what they release first…

At the same time the event time is strange. If Apple was going to make such an extraordinary announcment about M3 Pro/Max they wouldn’t do it so late in the evening. Here in Europe it will be at 1-2 a.m. when most people are asleep.
But it is the beginning of day in Asia (Far East). Maybe that is where an Apple is envisioning market growth. 😥

Minor spec bumps to try and invigorate Mac sales.

Nothing minor about this upgrade. The M3 is expected to be a fairly significant improvement over the M2. Also, M3 systems were going to come sooner or later. Mac sales will rise and fall depending on a lot of factors and Mac sales after down like the rest of the industry.
