1. Apple plans these events well in advance, so I don't think this is counteracting Qualcomm

2. Qualcomm mentioned that the their new laptop chip is 2X faster than M2, not M2 Max and 30% more power efficient vs M2 Max when comparing peak performance.

I would also check out this thread by Max Weinbach

Regardless of whether Qualcomm is cherrypicking their stats, I feel another "competition is good" thread incoming because they not only claim to trounce Intel and Apple, they even claim to trounce the latest Ryzen GPU.
Competition is good.

Indeed. Exciting to see other high end arm players. Intel is the problem and arm is the solution.

Agree. Competition is always good.

Maybe it will be scarily fast as it will be a short 30 second pre recorded clip announcing no new releases for 2023 posing the question Trick or Treat… followed by

Tricked!

Hoping they discontinue the 13" Pro with Touch Bar. That Mac shouldn't exist anymore. The 13/15" Air and the 14/16" Pro address all the possible use cases.

Also, where's the iMac, Kuo?
There is 1 use case unaddressed: people like me. People who need a fan but can get by with non-pro or max. They need a “MacBook” to fill that gap. M3, new body style in line with air and pro (aka no Touch Bar), and fan.

Nothing minor about this upgrade. The M3 is expected to be a fairly significant improvement over the M2. Also, M3 systems were going to come sooner or later. Mac sales will rise and fall depending on a lot of factors and Mac sales after down like the rest of the industry.

No, it isn't. You aren't going to see a significant upgrade in chip year over year. I'm sorry but this will be minor improvements in what are already incredibly fast chips.

Man, I'm stoked. I hope the GPU is killer and I can phase out my PC for casual gaming.
That’s hardcore gaming, not casual gaming 😆

They are going in the right direction but it will be a long while before they compete with the power/customization/developer support of PC platform. I’d choose PC or games console over Mac for games any day. Even a switch!

It’s not always about raw power.

Back in the S. J. days, there was always ”One More Thing …” and most of the time an unexpected surprise … well, surprise to me at least, maybe because I did not start reading MacRumors until some time after 2011 …

At the same time the event time is strange. If Apple was going to make such an extraordinary announcment about M3 Pro/Max they wouldn’t do it so late in the evening. Here in Europe it will be at 1-2 a.m. when most people are asleep.

My only guess(besides trying to really play up the Halloween marketing at night as Halloween is massive deal in the U.S.) would be that rumors are true and there is a severe supply issue with M3 chips and U.S. only gets the M3 chips in time for 2023 Christmas and rest of world launches sometime in Q1 2024(sort of like how Vision Pro ships in U.S. first).

Meh. M1max vs M3max? Can't think of a single compelling reason to upgrade for my workload. The M1 drives 3 5K monitors, encodes video, handles photos, and does everything else I need from my mac (especially since I got a 4090 gaming pc to do the heavy lifting because all the workloads are nvidia based, and Apple refuses to play nice with them).

That would be an appalling strategy. Yes, they do it already but restricting to US only for such hardware would be a big slap in the face for a lot of their customers. It would not go down well.

Exactly my position too… M1 to M3 is meh

So I’ve stuck with my Apple Newton for now until something more appropriate for my workflow appears. I think M4 at least.

In the meantime my Apple Newton is chugging away with DaVinci Dissolve

So the people who were upset that the M2 wasn't enough of an improvement over the M1 and that the real leap forward would be with M3-based machines are now upset that the M3 is being launched so soon? Got it.
If they upgraded from a 201X year Intel Mac to an M1 (I did, to a mini) and then were upset when they upgraded again from M1 to an M2 (I did not), I am sure they learned a lesson and will not go for an M3.

For those who said 14" and 16" MBP unlikely due to the fact they were released on January 2023, let us recall that these were delayed due to various production issues. There were supposed to be released in the Fall. Perhaps Apple is getting back to its originally planned release schedule.

Or perhaps we'll all wrong again :D
And M2 are more like M1+ chips.

Apple used to release chip level updates every 6-9 months. Events were reserved for model design changes.

Alot of people jumped on M1 like myself when we all saw the benchmarks compared to intel-based PC's. Unless you're absolutely reckless with money or have large amounts to burn in a firepit, the M2 was simply not worth the upgrade for many of us M1'ers. M1 was THE generational leap. We are back to evolutionary instead of revolutionary.
I agree. I have an M1 mini and it was a significant step up from my last Intel. For the M-series coming from an M1, I do not expect the “revolutionary” to happen until the M4 the earliest.

Apple didn’t just order the whole supply 3nm chips just for the iPhone 📱 they were for the Macs as well 🖥️ 💻

I don't expect revolutions anymore in the Mac lineup. Just solid evolutionary updates. Vision Pro is the next revolution
