I love the Mini form factor. It still tempts me, but it quite outdated and fairly expensive for what it is. The aspect ratio alone makes it far nicer than a phone to do reading.

Also, consider that some of us don't have our children on $1000 phones, but would be okay with them using a $300 tablet.

A10 Fusion and Pencil support seems plausible for a revamped iPad mini. Wonder if they would go back to the previous industrial design and the non-laminated screen as they did with the 5th Gen iPad?

Yeah, I doubt the mini will upstage the iPad. 2GB RAM, Non-laminated panel. A10. 32GB. Pencil support (maybe). Anything else just muddies the product matrix. Unless the iPad gets a A11 bump, I think that's what we can logically expect.

What’s the point of the iPad mini now that iPhones reach the 6.5” territory?

Only that the ipad mini has a 4:3 screen ratio, the ipad version of iOS which runs ipad apps, and significantly more screen area as well as possible pencil capability.

But sure, that small XS Max is easy to read pdfs and comics on. It's easy to take notes on. Split screen on the XS Max is amazing..

Oh and wait, the ipad Mini is pretty portable as well. And costs a LOT less.

Definitely unexpected, but good for those who are looking for an updated mini. Pretty lackluster though considering it's the old style without many improvements.

What if the new Mini is also edge to edge display? They could make it a whole lot smaller.

I wasn't expecting this. My wife has a Mini 2 that she wants to update and I told her they aren't making new Minis so she was going to get my iPad Pro 10.5" and I was going to get the new 12.9" with the smaller enclosure. I better make sure she is still fine with this. She uses the iPad Mini 2 a lot for business so a bigger iPad would probably be better, but IDK. I got my heart set on that 12.9", lol.

This sounds like way too much for a single event. New iPad designs, new iPad mini, new Apple Pencil, new low-cost notebook, new Mac mini, updated MacBook, updated iMac...I think we'll get half of that at best.

I agree in principal, but a lot of those updates are likely incremental and will just quietly go live on the day. Is anyone expecting a big iMac form factor change? They arguably need it, but no rumors of such, so we could just see spec refreshes to tide the line over for another 12+ months. Is a cheaper iPad Mini something that Apple needs to devote significant stage time too? Hey guys, it's that iPad that not so many people buy, but back at a price they'll buy it at, and now let's talk Mac Mini...

Nothing that is lined up here seems like that big of a deal outside of Apple fandom, so lots of small things is a legitimate way to grab media mindshare for a news cycle.

iPad mini vs. XS Max

Exactly. You would be amazed at how many people on these forums I've gotten into arguments with because they don't understand how rectangles and area work. We should be embarrassed that our education system has failed us this miserably because this is 4th grade math—or at least it was when I was in elementary school decades ago.

Sigh. Don't mean to sound rude but this is a tiresome meme. Do the math/look at the measurements. The mini is about twice the size due to the difference in ratio. Also that screen ratio makes a big difference for multitasking and apps in general. Yes, for a certain portion of the population a super-sized phone is good enough but it is hardly the same for those who want and iPad that is ultra portable.

New AirPods for the holiday season would be wonderful. I've been holding off on a pair (plus the AirPower) for months and am ready to pull the trigger!

Eh, big deal. Siri blows and touching the earpiece to activate siri is hardly a big deal, and wireless charging is just slower.

The true Airpod 2 with noise cancellation is the real upgrade worth waiting...

I wonder if the iPad mini will have Pencil support and how it will be priced compared to the $329 iPad.

Might be a spring event announcement though.

Seriously doubt it. All evidence suggests that if they continue the Mini line they will treat it as a non-pro device. Maybe it will support the Logitech Crayon, though. Be good for schools.

There were rumors about a mini pro. Maybe they meant iPad and not Mac, hope not.

Mac. Apple announced earlier this year that something is in the works for the Mac Mini, and they expected to 'share' it with us later this year (I.E. now). Mac Pro is scheduled for next year. iPad Mini updates are a surprise to most, but it makes little sense to add a 'Pro' designation to the iPad Mini.

Hmmm, he mentions a cheaper panel for the iPad Mini. I wonder if that means they will go back to the Mini 2/3 design which didn't have a laminated screen, throw in an A10 or hopefully an A11 and sell it for somewhere in the neighborhood of $279-299 for 32 GB?

I'm kind of tired of Apple doing low cost. Inevitably that just means the smaller (physically) products are crappy, and then it gives them an excuse to sell that crappy low cost product unchanged for years.

Used to be that Apple only did high end, regardless of physical size, and you could count on solid upgrades on a regular basis.

I get it, they want to make products more accessible to more people, and that's a good thing, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. Just seems like too much fragmentation and too much of an excuse to let certain products languish way, way, way too long.

Can't say I care for it either but for now that's the way they market. I opted for a sony mirrorless camera a few years back because it was smaller, higher quality, etc. There's something more admirable about being able to shove in so much in a compact form. I'd love to see an iphone XS in a smaller size 4.7" or so and keep the same functions. That would be more admirable, cool, or what have you vs an XS Max. IMO, it'd also be worth paying more for. That they could cram all that in such a small form factor.
