The M1 macs made me want one but the lack of ports offends my sensibilities knowing the lineage of greatness they descend from. To bring back the basic functionality they once offered is both exciting and also highlights what a waste the last 7ish years has been, replacing what was not broken with design decisions that often were!.....Give me Magsafe and at least one USB3 port that 90% of the world still use and I will buy one again after a decade.

And that opportunity cost is that for the 99% of the time when you are not using said port, it's just there taking up space and doing nothing.

So what? The only cost is that it makes the device 0.05 square millimeters larger and 0.05 ounces heavier, which is TOTALLY worth the 10 ass-savings that it'll provide you over the life of the machine.

I have also spoken earlier about how I don't think MagSafe even makes sense any more today. There used to be a legitimate use case for it when laptops had very short battery life and people found themselves constantly tethered to wall outlets. With M1 Macs, I foresee people just opting to leave them charging overnight (like what we currently do with iPhones and iPads) and just using them unplugged throughout the rest of the day. And they will certainly have enough juice to last a day. As such, I don't think MagSafe even fits in that well with people's usage patterns of their laptops any more.

I mean, i don't even know how to respond to this one without sounding insulting. There will tons of times when people will have to charge while not at home, and even at home people will still be in lots of situations where tripping over the charger cord is an easy possibility.

Great, so when the next MacBook Pros appear WITH a Touch Bar, everyone will say it was Apple that failed and that the leaker was the hero that Apple made a liar out of.

That is NOT how manufacturing works. Every new thing, no matter how small, cascades into increased costs, increased complexity, increased COGs, increased support costs, increased repair costs...

I have an older (2014) MBP. I'm an iOS developer. I can count on both hands the number of times I've used the HDMI port and the SD Card port. Useless to me. When I ordered an SD card for a Raspberry Pi I ordered, it ARRIVED with a USB dongle and I used that because it was easier than futzing with the actual card.

I doubt the additional ports means anything but extra USBC ports. There’s no way they are going to put an Ethernet port on these new machines just so I can do away with my usbc to Ethernet adapter.
I would rather a thinner machine than an Ethernet port built in.
The only way MagSafe would be useful is if it comes with a USBC plug at the other end, rather than being hardwired into the power supply.
Its super handy being able to travel from office to office and plug in to any usbc port for power rather than taking the one power supply everywhere.

It sounds like my dream computer is coming! 14” for portability without having to squint at the screen. Not having to pay a £200 premium for the touch bar when I don’t use it (I had a work MBP). Return of MagSafe is great, it actually saved my MacBook Air from being pulled to the ground. More ports too, however I DON’T THINK AN SD CARD READER WILL BE INCLUDED - this is because people could use it to avoid paying the high prices for more SD storage. Also I doubt an HDMI port will be included because it’s an expense when most people don’t need it and Apple assumes people will use thunderbolt for monitors.

The only thing I’d like to know is if it will have dedicated graphics?

But honestly, that is the point of having those ports on a computer. If you need them, they are just there. Someone with an old camera gives you an SD-card to copy pictures. It might only happen 1-2 times a year, but if you don't have it its annoying.
Yeah seriously. Someone who uses their Macbook Air as an email and browsig machine never really needs this, but it happens to me quite often that I'm on a job, at someone's office or on set or whatever, and they hand me a drive or a sd card or the end of an HDMI cable, and I have to go fishing thrugh my bag for an adapter, often to realize that I left it at home. It sucks, and the wasted time trying to find one or wasted time AND money running to staples or best buy to get one already justifies why I'd pay extra to have more ports.

The people buying these machines are often creative professionals on the go, and we need ports available even if we aren't using them all the time. It's actually a big part of what justifies putting "Pro" in the name of the computer. It needs to be flexible.

Personally I'm not bothered about the ports, unless they're bringing back an SD Card reader which would be amazing news.

No touchbar.

That's the headline. I felt for years that the touchbar was a weird statement of defiance. Most people hated it, nobody wanted to pay for it. It never featured on other mac keyboards. It was a weird gimmick.

If Apple also announce that you can replace the storage and battery yourself, then I'd probably not even resent whatever insane price they intend on selling these at.

Q3 2021? I thought we were looking at March. Bum.

"… most users may not need to purchase additional dongles."

Tim's all "Tee-hee! Yeah right!"

After seeing several Apple commercials on the NFL games this past weekend, I noticed most of them were older macs - that had the lighted logo. I'll bet that makes a comeback too.

Looks like a cool WWDC keynote on the way.
Would like Apple to put those commercials on YouTube. I'm sorry, the NFL got insane during the mid 1990s and they permanently lost me. I'm a C-Band dish owner and they shafted me. I've gone outside and love the AFL. No bias there. Yes, I'm an US citizen living in California. I'll never watch a NFL game. They've gotten too babyish. No adults there. Less problems with the AFL.

Excuse me for riffing but...

Sir, this is a forum about, quite literally, Mac Rumors.

Isn't a flat-edged design more difficult to pick up from a flat surface than a rounded design? Certainly feels like that with my iPhone SE 1st Gen vs. my iPhone 8 from work.
