This is most horrible design Im going to see. Just freakin make portable outlet connecting it using cable usb C is so much better compared to solder ports into the logic board. They should have offered touch buttons keyboard instead forcing everyone to used physical keys. Everyone uses iphone that has touch keyboard.

Regarding the release date, when they predict a release in the 3rd quarter, do they mean financial year or calendar year?

We don't really know, but personally I expect it to mean the calendar year: July-September, with an announcement at WWDC and shipping ready for the start of the going back to school campaigns in August...

🤷‍♂️

Thank you. I'm in need of a laptop - not urgently and was thinking if it's going to be in the next couple off months I'd wait for the 16". But if it is going to July to September, I'll buy a cheap laptop to see me through till then.

No problem, and remember the fiscal quarter is (normally, as far as I know**) after the calendar one, ie. October-December 2021, so that would be an even longer wait.

I'd get the base MacBook Air (and combine it with iCloud storage), if you need a "cheap" Mac option to last you 6-12 months.

** Edit: after some research it seems Apple's fiscal quarters is actually ahead of the calendar year, while the "delayed" one is more of a UK (?) thing?

Yes, pro cameras are moving onto CF Express, though as far as I know they all still support SD for the moment.
No pedantry intended but you must agree that the vast majority of current cameras (including those yet to be released) use sd cards, which is my point. It's not an "old camera" thing, which was the original point I was refuting, it's current standard and continues to be the most used and expected media.

Or even better, a cheaper second hand Air 😄

I DON’T THINK AN SD CARD READER WILL BE INCLUDED - this is because people could use it to avoid paying the high prices for more SD storage
What about an external ssd? Sd cards are slower and more fragile. I'm not sure it'd be a good solution for expanding internal memory...?

That's also an option.

But beware that I was actually wrong about the fiscal vs calendar year above. Apple (and US) tend to have a fiscal year ahead of the calendar one, and not like I thought behind it...

That means that _if_ they refer to Apple's fiscal 3rd quarter, we could see the new ones - assuming the rumours are accurate - earlier than I thought. :)

It's about time! So happy to see Apple getting back to it's roots (FINALLY). I wonder what is driving this? It just seems sudden, after so many years of Apple leaving us in the dark.

Are cats going to start living with dogs?

Isn't a flat-edged design more difficult to pick up from a flat surface than a rounded design? Certainly feels like that with my iPhone SE 1st Gen vs. my iPhone 8 from work.

Yes, but just like now, presumably the new Macs will have little feet/protrusions that provide a gap between table and the bottom of the case.

So what? The only cost is that it makes the device 0.05 square millimeters larger and 0.05 ounces heavier, which is TOTALLY worth the 10 ass-savings that it'll provide you over the life of the machine.

I mean, i don't even know how to respond to this one without sounding insulting. There will tons of times when people will have to charge while not at home, and even at home people will still be in lots of situations where tripping over the charger cord is an easy possibility.
One nice thing about the move to USB-C was that Mac users are no longer reliant on proprietary chargers. Since USB-C charging will still be present, I wonder if "MagSafe" is really just an improved TB4-compliant cable with a magnetic tip. There are many third party cables out there that simply charge, a few that support USB 3.0 data, and very few that support Thunderbolt data.

Hopefully they will also bring back the glowing Apple logo since the new laptops are more energy efficient.

This does not make any sense:

The new MacBook Pro machines will feature a flat-edged design, which Kuo describes as "similar to the iPhone 12" with no curves like current models.

The iPhone 12 uses a flat edge curved design. Unless he means they are going back to the 2006 MacBook Pro straight edge design, just with the current thinness of course.

I would find it strange for them to go back to adding more ports like USB A. I assume SD card reader maybe? But since upgrading to the 2020 M1 from my 2015 MacBook Pro, I haven't missed a single port. In fact, SD Card, HDMI port, older Thunderbolts were rarely, if ever used.

As for the Touch bar, I actually like it and it does not bother me one bit. Its usage I will admit is sparse, but so were the existing function keys on older generations, outside of volume up and down.

Considering I just bought my M1, I won't be an early adopter and will likely wait this one out for a few years. I am more likely to upgrade again next year Christmas, but go for an iMac instead. Hope they introduce a 32 inch screen.

One note I forgot to add, I will welcome the return of Magsafe. Although with 20 hour battery life on the M1, I rarely plugged in, but the charger for my 2015 is close to me and wound up in my feet the other day when I was stepping away from my desk and I pulled effortlessly. I don't think that would be same effect if it was the M1 with USB C.
I agree with nearly everything said here. I don’t miss all those useless ports on my 2012 or 2015 MBP. I never used firewire ports or SD cards. I did use an HDMI port on occaision at a customer office for display but I have ONE dongle with ethernet, 2 USB 3.1 type-A, and an HDMI port that carry in my bag that solved 99% of my “other port” needs. Yeah, I had an Apple USB-C to VGA/HDMI/USB-A/USB-C, USB-C to DB9 serial, and a TB3 to TB2(DP mini) dongle in my bag too because why not but I can’t recall actually using them except to troubleshoot a wonky conference room display that usually ended up not working with anyone’s laptop except some 720p VGA port on a WinXP laptop.

If you need a ton of ports, there are great TB3/USBC hubs that are very small. Get over it. TB4 and USB4 will make this a bit easier with required capabilities but it’s USB folks fault this all sucks. They could have required USBC to carry only USB 3.1 10Gbps speeds or whatever with their dumb numbering scheme no one understands. I sure as hell don’t want a thicker laptop just because somefolks don’t want a dongle to hook up an HDMI or VGA cable. I could probably find Slashdot comments from back when the serial port was removed and everyone moaned about the end of connectivity! How shall we hook up our printers, wired mice/trackballs, Logitech joysticks, or 56k modems?!? The horror!

My use case was to bring my MacBook Pro into the office. Having a standard charging brick meant that I could leave a charger in the office and one at home and not have to carry a charger back and forth. I did the same thing for laptops from Dell but the chargers were only good for that model. If I upgraded, I'd have to buy yet another spare charger.
You're concerned about needing to pay $30 for a charger when spending $1000 on a new laptop?

It's reasonable to prefer to not have to buy more stuff needlessly. I've got a spare usb c mac charger too, nothing wrong with it. Doesn't sound like a good thing to have to buy more things, not just for the money, but also the needless waste and production of more eventual landfill.

I agree with that, assuming you are talking about still cameras and not video cameras. In a few years, CF Express type a and b will be in most cameras.

Agreed. I think the only plausible "additional port" would be something such as DisplayPort 2.0, which is not specifically supported by TB4 (at least not with the bandwidth necessary to drive an 8K display). MagSafe might see a return, but ideally it would be in the form of a "MagSafe cable" that plugs into any of the TB4 ports and has a magnetic break-off tip that can still transmit TB4 data.
