SD cards are easily-accessed via a USB-attached hub or reader. Not sure the port has to be on the physical laptop to be considered something a pro can easily access. It’s certainly more convenient if it’s something you can’t be without (because it’s on the laptop) but that seems a weak reason for it to have to be there if Apple finds other ports are better for the bulk of its user base.

It's always seemed odd to me that people will proclaim "it has to have an SD card slot for Pros", while ignoring that it's Professional photographers who are most likely to be using the more expensive, more exotic, but higher performance card formats, or that carrying a 2Kg laptop and ~1.5Kg DSLR (without lenses) is no hassle, but adding a <100 gram card reader is going to make them all the hunch back of Notre Dam due to the excessive weight.

That's also an option.

But beware that I was actually wrong about the fiscal vs calendar year above. Apple (and US) tend to have a fiscal year ahead of the calendar one, and not like I thought behind it...

That means that _if_ they refer to Apple's fiscal 3rd quarter, we could see the new ones - assuming the rumours are accurate - earlier than I thought. :)
That would be great. So, IF this were the case, approximately when could we possibly see a new 16" MBP?

Weeeeell, as I said earlier, my guess is August/September-ish, to accomodate back-to-school, at it's earliest, maybe with an announcement as early as WWDC, but Apple do work in mysterious ways, so they could surprise us all. :)

No Touch Bar? More ports? REAL MagSafe is back?!? No needed dongles?? And it’s not April 1st?!?

Very good (rumored) news!!! Makes me wish I was in the market for one.
I totally agree!
It would be great if you could charge from MagSafe OR USB Type-C, but the MagSafe chargers have some great advantages -- for one thing, the wire in the cable is much thinner, so it's easy to wrap around the charger and carry in a bag. And there's the breakaway feature.

Toss in a USB-A and an HDMI port, and I will be chomping at the bit to upgrade. The USB Type-C only thinking has been a huge hassle for me, and expensive as well. Every time I'd run into a conference room at work I'd need to grab the stupid dongle or else I couldn't connect to the projector. I really hated that.

Brilliant. Sorry I misread your post.

I'll bet when they say Magsafe they mean wireless magnetic induction charger ... that takes 3 days for a full charge.

Please let this be true. TB was/is bad. I miss MagSafe everyday. I will (look forward to) buy if most/all of this actually becomes reality.

Holy Crap is it April Fools day. I have a 2019 Macbook Air that just sits still prefer my Early 2011 with upgraded memory and SSD because of mag safe and extra ports. Apple most finally be lossing market share, I am a die hard apple fanboy but bought my first Android phone because of underscreen finger print sensor. Please don't bash me, or commit about lower masks, not an option in my line of work.

FINALLY, I can get rid of the touchbar!

If only they weren't going to the God awful, ugly flat edge, though. I refuse to buy a new iPad Pro because they are UGLY. Now, it's all ugly, I guess. Glad to get so many awesome features back that were discarded like dead rats, but they still aren't fixing their mentality that's nothing like Steve Jobs'. What made Apple magic—the UX and aesthetic—is long gone.

You must work with your mobile phone then ;)

Other than that, they just waited a few years with any action to bring back the stuff people wanted, and we can forever argue wether it was to not admit failure with the 2016 onwards models or to just entice you to get a Mac with Apple Silicone chip.

they absolutely do and those are the vast majority of people purchasing them. People continuously get hung up on the word "pro" its just a marketing term for the higher end model
There is zero reason for the vast majority of people to be purchasing the "higher end" model unless they are for some reason doing heavy gaming on a Mac (which the vast majority who just need a web, social media, or MS Office computer aren't doing).

I am a creative "pro" and I was even torn on whether to get the M1 Pro vs the Air, because it really doesn't add much. With the additional ports, I would go with the Pro without hesitation. It would just make more sense for me and pretty much every other person I know who uses it for creative work.

The only reason it's currently just a marketing term is because it lacks pro features... like ports that pros would use.

Magsafe, no Touch Bar, and more ports with an M1 is all I want now. I'll finally get a chance to upgrade my Intel 2014 MBP with magsafe, no Touch Bar and more ports. Like they say, everything old is new again -- or something like that.

there's 0 reason for someone to buy a Mercedes for commuting over a kia but they do.

Apple is working on two new MacBook Pro models that will feature significant design changes, well-respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in a note to investors that was obtained by MacRumors.

16inchmacbookpromain.jpg

According to Kuo, Apple is developing two models in 14 and 16-inch size options. The new MacBook Pro machines will feature a flat-edged design, which Kuo describes as "similar to the iPhone 12" with no curves like current models. It will be the most significant design update to the MacBook Pro in the last five years.

There will be no OLED Touch Bar included, with Apple instead returning to physical function keys. Kuo says the MagSafe charging connector design will be restored, though it's not quite clear what that means as Apple has transitioned to USB-C. The refreshed MacBook Pro models will have additional ports, and Kuo says that Most people may not need to purchase dongles to supplement the available ports on the new machines. Since 2016, Apple's MacBook Pro models have been limited to USB-C ports with no other ports available.

All of the new MacBook Pro models will feature Apple silicon chips, and there will be no Intel chip options included. The MacBook Pro models will use the same heat pipe design used by the current 16-inch MacBook Pro model, which Kuo says is much better than the current 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air because it will allow for increased computing power.

Kuo says that we can expect to see the new MacBook Pro models released in the third quarter of 2021. Due to the revamped design and strong replacement demand, Kuo expects total MacBook shipments to grow significantly by 25 to 30 percent year over year to 20 million units.

Kuo also said that high-end iPhone models coming in 2022 are likely to adopt a vapor chamber thermal system, which Apple is "aggressively testing." The VC thermal system will be required for the high-end iPhones due to their stronger computing power and faster 5G connection speeds. There are already smartphones from companies like Samsung, Razer, and LG that use vapor chamber cooling technology, which is used to keep a device cooler when it is under heavy stress.

It is unclear if the vapor chamber thermal system will meet Apple's high requirements, according to Kuo, but he is optimistic about the reliability improvement schedule and expects at least high-end models to adopt it in the near future.

I want to see an Ethernet port on the new Apple Silicon MacBook Pros. Many professionals are using their MacBook Pros as desktop replacements, and when they are on the desktop and not moving around, the extra speed a reliability of a wired connection is essential. Wi-Fi 6 is very good for when the machines are away from the desktop space, but wired connections are always more stable and faster, and an Ethernet port would be a very welcome addition. I still have my 7" MBP from when I got it in 2010, which has an Ethernet port. I am writing this comment on a 2012 model which does not, and I have been waiting for years, until the time is right, to buy a new computer. I am eagerly waiting to see what this update looks like, and which ports are included. I want to see MagSafe for charging, USB 4, SD Card, 3.5mm headphone, and HDMI ports included. Did I leave anything out?

given that ethernet is only being used at a desk I would say its an obvious candidate for a dongle/hub

Apple: Touch Bar won't be removed in the upcoming redesigned 2021 MBP and it's the feature that distinguishes between Air and Pro model. However, Apple can consider implementing the Touch Bar 2 with physical function key as a standard keyboard feature for all the mac model so the developer has more incentive to add support in their application.

This is just WRONG. Sorry, but I absolutely love the Touch Bar. Makes the experience much more intuitive. But it bears the question, Apple has just updated the MacBook Pro and it includes a Touch Bar. Why can't they KEEP the Touch Bar and add a row of function keys underneath. They can easily move the Touch Bar further up. I hate that they removed 3D Touch and I hate the thought of the Touch Bar being retired.

How sure are you that Apple won't remove the Touch Bar. I honestly hope they don't, but I just chant understand why they can't move the Touch Bar up and then reintroduce the physical function keys if most customers really want that. I fricken love my Touch Bar it sets the MacBook Pro apart and they literally just updated some of the MacBook Pro's that retains the Touch Bar so it doesn't make sense to remove it on the presumably more expensive 16-inch model.

Secondly isn't this source quite reliable?

I am hoping they will still produce Touch Bar versions or at least give us the option to have it or not.

Am I the only one wondering if MagSafe on the new laptops uses the same “puck” as iPhone but attaches magneticly over the Apple logo on the back of the screen?
I hope they keep the MagSafe charge the same across the line up, will be hugely convenient.

It never really made sense. If it was tactile, it might have worked. But having to look down at your keyboard to find where controls are is bad.
Its so intuitive though. How Apple Pay pops up and points you to the Touch ID, how you can send emojis, answer and end calls, adjust controls such as volume and brightness and you can completely customise it to how you work as well. Unbelievable for editing photos as well like adjusting rotation. Such a shame if they remove it.

If customers really wanted physical function keys back why can they not move the Touch Bar strip upwards? There is plenty of space on the MacBook Pro 16-inch given its size and there will be even more room with Apple Silicon.
