Fundamentally, Apple recognizes that if every Macbook today has a dongle, something is very wrong with the design.

Magsafe, SD-Port, and HDMI plus Apple Silicon… for me a dream come true.
As for the Touch Bar, it was nice knowing you, but I never loved you.

Of course. USB-C is great... having one port that can handle USB, Thunderbolt, displays, and power!

However... this "going forward" started 5 years ago... and people still have devices and cables with USB-A plugs today. And they're frustrated about having to "carry a dongle" just to use a simple flash drive or whatever.

That's all I was saying.

Oh I'm sure there will never be a USB-A port on a Mac laptop ever again. I was just wondering where the USB-A port would rank among the desire to bring back other ports like HDMI and the SD card slot.

:)

I kind of think the problem has more to do with the PC space much rather than Mac. If the PC industry refuse to force the Usage of USB-C over USB-A it might likely take another 5 years.

You forgot history it seems. That actually killed it off way too early and it was a major inconvenience - similar to how they killed the USB-A in 2016 yet it is rampantly still popular all these years later.
Part of why USB-A is so popular is that even if you have a USB-C machine, good luck adding more USB-C ports when you run out. It's so hard to find hubs. So the peripherals kinda still have to be USB-A.

Is SD capped in some way CFAST isn't? I remember hearing how DisplayPort was replacing HDMI because it supported higher resolutions, but then they released HDMI 2.0 and so on to bridge the gap. Same with USB and FireWire, and FireWire ended up dying.
SD is capable of 1TB but I haven't seen a 1TB SD card available today that can record 6k BRAW footage. likely too expensive to make.

HDMI had a 4 year headstart. DisplayPort was initially royalty free, but couldn't catch up in time before HDMI reached extreme popularity but we do have USB-C DP Alt mode which is growing.

Version 8 of the SD Express card standard was released last May.
Two channel PCIe 4.0 max bus speed 3,938 Mbps and storage capacity in the terabytes.
maybe Apple wants to be the first to use it, and would easily justify reintroduction of an SD card slot. It would be the “SD Express” slot.
Mind you, it would be hard to make huge margins on storage upgrades if they do that.

Measuring DSLR Trend against the usage of SD Card on DSLR? Seriously?

Keep Spinning it.
I have no clue what you're saying, so I'm going to assume you had a typo to mean "SD card on a MacBook Pro" instead of "SD Card on DSLR".

DSLR, mirrorless cameras, and action cameras are the #1 use case for an SD card slot on the MacBook Pro. All three are in decline.

Funny how you don't mention a big "pro" use case for keeping SD slots in MacBook as a rebuttal, but ok.

Why is that though? Is there even a market for USB-C replicators? I’ve never needed more than the four that come with MBP, and most larger peripheral equipment has built in replicators 🤔

Idk if you realize you can press and hold then slide the sound but you can. A lot smoother than tapping and then adjusting. Still not same as a tactile button but in some ways I like it a bit better
You can also do a mini horizontal swipe over the volume key itself and save yourself the slight delay.

I feel like Apple thought they were being clever by giving us all these different volume options but I think physical buttons or a two finger "turn knob" gesture on the trackpad makes more sense. (Havent attempted but might be possible with BetterTouchTool)

Sound interesting / strange... They did everything to move away from various ports, and packed it all in USB-C which include video signal, and what not... Now they are going ‘back in time’.

Then they should bring back USB-A as well :p

I’ve needed all these relics exactly 0 times in the past years. In the end I guess it raises costs to have extra holes that represent the past.

PS: I’m not bothered by this. Thanks to Apple Silicon awesomeness, I can do everything on a fanless M1 Air (instead of MBP) & I don’t foresee the Air getting these old relics.

HDMI is the new VGA DSUB. It's the lowest common denominator, and it sucks balls compared to the alternatives. No one smart chooses it if they have another choice.

If you want to see what future HDMI versions will support, look at what DisplayPort supports now, and then keep in mind that pretty much every part of the HDMI spec is optional, so manufacturers are free to avoid whichever bits they want and still claim it's "HDMI 2.1".

It's still just fine for use cases that are quite common on a laptop, like hooking it up to a projector.

SD card is slow... I hope they can have something like CFAST or CFEXPRESS.... I have enough dongles and docks, don't really think I need HDMI or SD cards back. please make it as light and slim as possible. less ports, and water proof.

It would be nice if the SD card was flush with the outside when it was inserted and it could be ejected with a software command, similar to how Mac floppies worked. Then it could be safely used as additional portable storage.

I love this idea, but I think adding “movable parts” to an otherwise solid, maintenance-free design is out-of-the question. I do share your nostalgia of software controlled robotics inside computers, however.

Maybe this can be a project for the modding community! If there is one.

SD slot in a pro laptop instead of CF Express?? So it is the MacBook Consumer now?

Seems a bit daft to be to put a legacy port that present on any pro camera as CF Express replaced it, well, CF Express replaced XQD and CFast 2.0 which in turn replaced CF cards, SD was always for consumer models.

Windows laptops use dongles as well. The difference is that most Windows laptop OEMs include one or few dongles with the purchase, while Apple does not. If Apple put back some of those ports, I expect higher starting price.

Putting an SD card slot back in the mac will come as a pleasent surprise to many audio and video users who's devices uses SD cards. In my opinion the biggest sector who would be in support of this is the photography sector because being able to save photo's onto a SD card and then put that SD card into other machines to work on the photo's is extremely important because of it's simplicity and ease of use.

Any photographer that wanted to use a current macbook to edit their work would have to carry a USB SD card reader. This is not always practical given the assignments many photographers are given. The less they have to carry the better it is for them. Also, external devices are prone to getting lost or damaged. The ideal solution for many situations photographers find themselves in would be, camera, spare camera batteries, different lenses and a small laptop. The photographer would be able to work on the fly, take the shots, take the SD card out of the camera and plug it into the laptop. This is not possible with the current line of macbooks meaning the photographer would have to purchase a windows based laptop because they still have SD card slots in them, even current models.

The same could be said for videographers as well. Not everyone of them carries expensive video cameras and those that carry ones that use SD cards, these videographers would want to be able to see the video after they've shot it. This cannot be done with a current macbook unless they want to carry an external USB to SD card reader device with them. Also it does not help if the videographer, like with the photographer prefers to use mac software rather than windows software.

Many videographers and photographers will be happy with Apple's decsion because they will be able to ditch their windows laptops and return to use a macbook.
