I hope so. That would be a much more popular SE than the current one. Doubt it would happen before 2023 though until they stop production of the 12 mini.

I somewhat agree, but one part of keeping the price low was being able to resuse existing production lines by slapping newer parts into an already existing chassis. The XR is still being sold but will likely be dropped once the iPhone 13 hits so keeping the production line alive until 2023 doesn't make sense. It could very well align with the end of the iPhone 12 mini production though.
Right, but the XR production line is still going on and made products at a high rate for many years. The Mini NEVER had that type of volume. Also, component costs (like LCD and the camera) are much cheaper than what's in the Mini.

People have always assumed that SE means "small" but that's only because the older designs were relatively smaller phones compared to the newer versions. SE is designed primarily to be a lower-cost, yet completely useable iPhone and the XR is already at $499 with multiple colors (and you have to assume they're making money at that price.) If Apple can upgrade the internal components to more modern specs (5G, better camera, faster processor) for $399, that's where they're going to go.

The current Mini starts at $699 (subsidized). I can't see them dropping that to $399 with the current components so quickly. They would have to completely engineer a new phone to get a lower cost for a smaller size that seems to have limited appeal, and that just doesn't add up.

If you want a small phone, you better get the current Mini or next year's model. Because I think by 2023, the Mini will be gone, along with the older (original) iPhone design with the Home button and large bezels.

Once again only on MR were people asking for a small smart phone.

In the real world, no one says hey I wish my phone were smaller. No one.

Thus the lack of excitement/

Have you met one person outside of an Apple fan website that asked for a smaller iPhone ?

Smaller than iPhone X? No one

Translation: my imagination is limited to my own experience, therefore I cannot comprehend any alternative.

In recent months, there have been numerous reports about the iPhone 12 mini experiencing lackluster sales relative to other iPhone 12 models,
You conveniently left out the part where MacRumors routinely and bizarrely promotes these speculation based reports and attempts to spin everything related to the 12 mini as negative (see its recent top 8 smartphone sales ranking).

When is MacRumors going to explain it’s vendetta against the iPhone 12 mini?

Top 8 selling smartphone model with millions of sales per month. I hate to break it to you but MR forum membership is not remotely that big.
Believe it or not there exist people who like/want different things than you do. You may not want/like/need one but your preferences are not everyone’s.

If they would have made it a pro phone I would have purchased one.
They can't do it right, can they?

You want a Pro, but in the Mini's size. The next guy wants it to be cheaper. Another one wants all the features of the normal/big ones, but also better battery life and lower price point. So, the Mini that would sell in sufficient volumes to be feasible doesn't exist. They'd basically have to offer at least three different Minis (12 Mini, 12 Pro Mini and the Unicorn Mini, the latter one being the variety of Pro Max features and battery life in the small form factor at the SE price point).

Several, out of how many million potential buyers? It was a foolish idea from the get go.
Apple was just testing the waters, and the census says no one wants a small iphone.

I’m sure that’s exactly right! Your armchair intuition is without question greater than Apple’s hundreds of millions of dollars in market research! Someone hire this commenter!

Well this is disappointing. I wonder if there’s not enough difference between the SE and the Mini? Personally I would take the Mini over the SE.

For me the main problem is that Mini is still so much bigger than the old SE. I'd love an SE-sized model with a screen over the whole front surface. Meanwhile I've just replaced the battery in my old SE, so I can hopefully use it for another two years or so.

If there is no so-called iPhone 14 mini next year, the iPhone SE would regain the title of smallest iPhone with its 4.7-inch display.

Well, if Apple drops mini since apparently nobody wants small screens anymore, why keep SE2020 form factor going, with its much older tech and inferior specs compared to the current mini?

A rumour that SE2023 will have a 6.1” screen does not really make much sense to me, considering Apple could just “downgrade” iPhone 11 to that SE position then and call it a day, without having to dive into any R&D. After all, this is what an SE is, a bit better “filling” in an old design. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That’s disappointing if it’s true, but honestly I don’t know if it matters either way. All smart phones, including iPhones, have become boring and yet Apple keeps selling more and more of them.

"smaller-sized iPhone with a modern design" ...No. 5.4inch is larger than iphone 8 form which was even larger than iphone 5. 4.7 should be the max size of a smaller phone. No body asked for this hence it failed.
My 12 mini is easier to hold than my 8 as the body of the phone is smaller in all directions, so in my book it's a win. I mean I could have been down for even like 5.1-5.2", but it's only really the top of the screen that's an issue and thankfully that's not used as much as it used to be for navigation and such.

I would buy a foldable iPhone 12 Pro instead of an iPhone Mini - if pricing was similar. The mini currently just slightly less than the 12, so consumers just don’t see the benefits, beyond it being smaller. I would love to see Apple keep the link form factor and move the price under $500 if at all possible. Then i believe it would be a hit.

But that's exactly what the first two SE generations were too: an iPhone 5 with updated internals instead of keeping the aging iPhone 5s in the lineup as is, and an iPhone 8 with updated internals instead of keeping the aging iPhone 8 in the lineup as is. So it makes perfect sense that the next one will be an iPhone 11 with updated internals instead of keeping the aging iPhone 11 in the lineup as is.

Yes. Every single person I know with a 12 series opted for the mini except my dad, who got a regular 12 from work and commented, totally unprompted, that he wished they’d offered him the mini.

It’s actually the Max that I’ve literally never seen a single person want/use except on tech forums

Good. No point putting out a model that sells poorly. The mini is a failure! If people want a small phone they can just get an SE.

meanwhile here I am with an iPhone 12 Pro Max and keep thinking I wish this was bigger! I would not mind at all if they made the Pro Max models about 7”. Plenty of room in my pocket!

I think Apple should do a line up like this:

5.4” - iPhone SE
6.1” - iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro
6.7” - iPhone 13 Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max
7.2” - iPhone 13 Pro Max

I’ve only seen the Pro/Max in the hands of friends who wanted it for status. My Mini friends love them and upgraded from older phones so they have better battery life than they used to.
