I agree 100%. I think things we hear as rumors are the things letting too many down. Though I love to see major innovation each year I think (speaking personally) it’s easy to forget the power and how far we have progressed. It’s phenomenal what these small devices can do and I think we are reaching a peak that is difficult to raise the bar a great deal every year.

It's true we can't expect mind-blowing new technology every year, but it's not as if there aren't new features to be envisioned for the phone, like USB-C, bilateral charging, touch ID under the screen, pencil support. Dave 2D put it best by saying that the 2019 phone will be a "placeholder" phone. That's not to say that it's not going to be a great phone, just that those who have an X and XS should probably skip this year and wait for 2020 when the real innovations come. I have an iPhone 8 with a dated design, so for me, this will be a big upgrade. If this is just a super-refined iPhone X, then all the better for me. I've been getting the "S" phones for years. I always prefer to skip out on the new features and wait for the more refined version.

People should have known that 2020 will be the major upgrade. Anyone who thought 2019 was going to be big was setting themselves up for disappointment

Naw - I don't think a "big upgrade" really means anything.

If you wait for 2020 iPhones because you think 5G is going to be great, remember that it will take some time for the 5G infrastructure to roll out to the smaller centres. If you are in a big city, you'll enjoy 5G a year or more earlier than all the small cities.

What I do see is a lot of people who are holding on to an iPhone 7 who really should be upgrading. Does it mean Apple is going to sell a lot of iPhone 8's now? :). Probably! But really the argument for and against upgrading is well understood by everyone on MacRumors I'd say. My bet is we see a super cycle of upgrades this year, and yes the 5G future is good too - but too far away to really hold off - life can be short.

in 2018, you said 2019 is the biggest update,
in 2020, im sure you will said that 2021 is the biggest update.

Exactly. these guys must be paying $800 per year to keep an outdated phone running, but I can't figure out why.

Apple purposefully withholds and stifles technology and innovation. They are a terribly managed company and have been since Crook took over.
Not sure if serious.

If so, hilarious take! Apple has objectively performed well under the management of Tim Cook. He led the creation of $700B in shareholder value and many innovations including Watch, AirPods, services, silicon, Apple Pay, and kept the legacy businesses thriving in an ultra competitive market.

You sir, are hating.

Tomorrow, we will see even more innovation and products that will lead the industry.

Some of these iPhones cost north of $1K and they will give us a charger with half a USB C charger..? No USB C on iPhone ..? This is not a corner that Apple should be cutting these days. They have been using lightning for years now and the data transfer/sync speeds are not 2019 data transfer speeds up on par with other smartphones. I sure hope Apple does not disappoint with another year of lightning ports on iPhones

How is it a miss when it was a rumor that didn't pan out??? "I think the next iPhone will have infinite battery life" "What? It doesn't? That's a miss" #logic

Also, who the hell wants to charge one thing by draining some of the power from your primary device? AirPods and watch both last well over a day already. Just make the iPhone battery life better, no need for sacrificing it's power for other stuff that doesn't need it

And the angle of view is expressed in degrees.

I’ve never seen anyone discuss an “angle of view” in degrees for a camera lens. It’s always a 28mm lens or a 50mm lens or whatever (usually converted to 35mm equivalent if the sensor size is different). That tells you the “angle of view.”

Well, I'm in for one... likely downsize from the Max to the Pro.. Stopped using my phone for nonsense, so the smaller screen works better for me. I do use the camera extensively, so that is my motivation

While this release does seem to lack pizzazz, don't underestimate the value of a wide angle camera. A 2x lends is nice, but a wide angle opens up so many possibilities.

TheVerge: The company announced its Galaxy A7 phone today for Europe and Asia: a midrange device that features a unique three-camera setup on the back. It includes a 24-megapixel sensor with autofocus, a 5-megapixel “depth lens” that’s used for a bokeh effect, and an 8-megapixel wide angle lens that can capture up to a 120-degree field of view.

Dpreview: The LG V30 is the Korean manufacturer's latest flagship smartphone and offers a dual-camera setup that combines a main camera with a 71-degree angle of view with a secondary 120-degree super-wide angle lens.

For wide-angle smartphone lenses it’s common. Gives regular user a better understanding than 34mm or 75mm or whatever.

Well, I know what you are saying about focal length, but actually this business of converting to the context of 35mm film is a bit old school and maybe a bit out-dated too.

I remember looking at some of those "micro four third" cameras or whatever they were calling them, and all the focal length business got to be baloney. The term "normal" lens usually meant a 50mm lens on a 35mm SLR camera, but even on my digital rebel, it's not true I don't think :) and I stopped caring long ago.

The more I see that square camera on the back and it's way less protruding than before, the more nice it looks. Like I said earlier couple months ago when the big square camera hole leaked out, Apple ain't that stupid to not make it beautiful.

I must be getting older, the iPhone releases just aren’t the same as they used to be for some reason.

Even "twice as fast" feature of the iPhone 3GS made me upgrade on day one, because phones used to be slow back then. Nowadays, even a cheap iPhone SE is still as fast as other flagship for me.

So we have:
-new colors
-new cpu/gpu
-new co proc for better location accuracy
-new battery,bigger battery
-new faceid angles
-more ram
-better display
-better camera
-better speakers
-better cable lighting-usbC in the box
-better water and shock resistance

So if people bought the Xs/xs plus it will (since its an bigger update than xs was) also buy this one

Sold my XS MAX for $1100 CDN. I’ll be upgrading only because I don’t lose out after buying it on a contract, however if it wasn’t for the ecosystem I’d be going elsewhere. How does Apple get away with offering a 5w charger in 2019?
