Wow!!!

Shocking amount of negativity here!

I’m typing this on my iPhone XS Max...which just so happens to be a mind-bendingly awesome phone!!!

How in the world could they make it any nicer?

Oh ya...BIG camera upgrades, brighter screen, improved haptics, improved battery life, improved speakers, faster processor, better Face ID.

That’s what I expect to see. Do I need any of it? Of course not. But I’m super excited and will buy one!
Or maybe, decrease the notch, add a 18w charging brick on the box, improve the stereo speakers, add a 3D object scanning camera on the back, upgrade lightning to USB-C, improve the battery life, add fingerprint sensor on the screen. How ‘bout that?

no Apple Pencil support. i'm shocked /s

steve jobs did blatantly blast the concept of a stylus and a phone. but that was back 10+ years ago at the first iphone launch, so to say they could never ever try it again would be kind of silly.

Hey Juli,

Any mention in Kuo's update about whether Apple will pass along their reduced DRAM & NAND costs to consumers ?

As many already know, DRAM & NAND (manufacturing) costs are both down 50% compared to last Summer.

No chance. We’re still paying “fuel surcharges” 20yrs later. It comes to a point where once they’ve already charged you so much, you’re never getting the lower price again. ATKOT. YMMV. IMO. Good luck.

Im personally very excited to upgrade to the iPhone Pro. If you have an X or XS there is very little reason. I have the iPhone 7. It is time. I expect this to be a pretty impressive, qualitative upgrade from what i have. I think everyone saying these will be a failure are very wrong. I think this will be the year, with the very sly repositioning of the XR as the standard, that a bunch of home button holdouts will make the leap

I don't think this year's iPhone release will be a failure. They are still going to sell gobs and gobs of new iPhones and make billions of dollars. I would say, however that I think the majority of those calling this new iPhone generation a failure are meaning it in the sense that there will be no new features to make a person's heart skip a beat and have them run to the nearest Apple store with the credit card already in hand and say "Apple, take mah monies, right meow!".

I can see though from your perspective of having an iPhone 7 currently, that the new features would be innovative and exciting. I have an XS Max and I don't think think there will be any features compelling enough to prompt me to upgrade, unless Apple managed to hide something from us that will be completely game changing.

That also assumes that all other costs associated with designing and manufacturing the iPhone remains the same. It's possible (and likely) that the lower ram / storage costs may go towards offsetting the higher costs of other components (like the triple camera array), thereby allowing Apple to charge the same prices rather than increase them further.

“Have heard as well Apple has been having some issues with the reverse wireless charging for AirPods/Watch on back of the new high-end iPhones, despite it being planned. This is a feature Samsung has had for months and would be Apple’s second miss on charging (AirPower) if true.”

So let me get this straight.

Someone puts out a rumour early on theorising that Apple might be including a certain feature, then releases another rumour later on stating that Apple won't be doing it, and now it's somehow Apple's fault?

I see it this way. Apple never had plans to put reverse-wireless charging on the back of their iPhones (which I still find to be more of a gimmick than anything else; who is going to sit there with their phone placed upside-down on the table for an hour while your watch charges?). Instead, someone gets to claim credit for putting out 2 unsubstantiated rumours, Apple obviously won't corroborate anything, but they get all the blame for supposedly not being "innovative", when it should be the rumour mills we should be pointing fingers at for spreading fake news.

I agree with your general premise but at the same token there's only so much Apple can raise the price before consumers say enough is enough. Even when it's time to upgrade they probably won't because don't see the value for the price that they're paying.
That's why Apple has in place programmes like the annual upgrade and trade-in initiatives, all of which work to lower the upfront cost of owning an iPhone (while also supplying Apple with a steady stream of second-hand iPhones which they can then resell in the grey market).

There's more than one way to skin a cat, and there are ways to still sell premium smartphones in a maturing market without lowering the price.

I'll skip this year and buy out my XS (which still has AppleCare+ for another year). Then when next years model comes out I can sell this one for $300-400 or hang onto it for something else and just start the plan over. Thats my logic for skipping this year.

This is my exact logic as well. Rather just pay off my Xs Max completely and use the credit towards the 2020 iPhone cause we all know that one is going to be expensive lol.

Sorry guys, but we gotta be honest with ourselves: Apple is not the maker driving innovation forward anymore.

I see Samsung, Huawey and the other manufacturers risking and trying amazing stuff, even if they flop sometimes: 90Hz screens, foldable devices, reverse charging, pop-out front cameras, finger print sensors under the screen, pen support, 5G capability, 45W ultra fast charging, etc. Where is Apple in that race to glory?!

IPhones have become so boring and predictable... :(

This is now a mature product category - think PCs for the last decade or so. I decided early this year that my 2017 X would be lasting until at least 2021. There's just nothing coming that makes it worth buying another $1k phone - anybody's $1k phone. The tech simply does not advance that much in a year or two, at this point. The low hanging fruit are long gone.

He just updated that tweet:

"Yup, sounds like backside charging is out."

With those expectations I have to wonder if you are truly from “Earth.” ;)

So glad I bought the "old" SE last year after Apple wiffed on the SE2. All this "innovation" is underwhelming. Meanwhile I am loving my physical home button and headphone jack.

“Innovation” is an interesting word on Mac Rumors. People seem to think it means being first to release something, but I would say that it has more to do with who come up with the idea first. We often hear rumors of iPhone features 2 and even 3 years I advance, but they are never first to release them. Is it not possible for other manufacturers to hear these rumors and try their hardest to preempt Apple? If I were Samsung I would be trying to do this in every possible place, because today the first to do something is the one credited for anything in tech.

Kuo's record is nearly perfect, year after year.

He went on the record months ago saying Apple went from Broadcom to an STMicro controller in order to support bilateral wireless. The teardowns will prove whether he is correct.

I can't wait for this conference. I am really interested to see how they spin calling this the Pro (if that rumor is true). As of right now, there is nothing Pro about it.
