I think it depends on the person really. I have a couple of newer Samsung devices that have the hole punch, and it's nice having the full screen and top portion for things like Wifi signal, LTE, etc. and other items. But to be honest, like others have mentioned on this thread, after a while you completely forget.

What I notice, and wish Apple would fix is the size of the icons. After using Pixel and Samsung, I like being able to make the icons smaller. I don't need a giant phone icon...I know it's the phone app. That's why it's an icon vs. text. Doesn't need to be tiny, but a little smaller would be nice. 🙂
They need to optimize iOS for the different screen sizes. It’s ridiculous the smallest iPhone looks identical to the biggest iPhone. Such a waste of screen.

Hate both the notch and this hole. Would prefer removing front camera over these, sadly won't happen.
Moving camera? No thank you.
If that one phone that tried it, plus folding phones have proven anything, it’s that a device that is handled as poorly as the majority of smart phones are handled should not have any moving parts.
Butterfly keyboards failed if you got a little chip crumb into them, imagine what happens when you get something stuck underneath your moving camera.

I guess if the iPhones have an under the screen fingerprint scanner that that’s fine. I’d prefer to keep the notch and have both Face ID and a fingerprint scanner

I must be in the minority, but even after a few years of the notch phones, I wouldn’t say it goes unnoticed for me.

It's like receding hairline. What can you do other than forget about it? Rogaine doesn't grow new hair but just thickens what few thinning ones are left.

How about something more innovative like in-screen sensors and camera to completely eliminate notch and pin hole? Apple must not have enough money for R&D.
You might not believe this with all your wise wisdom, but they have every form of prototype in the lab that you could think of.
Maybe they realized that hiding everything under the display was:
A: extremely hard to mass produce
B: would be an additional expense they would have to pass on to the customers that wasn’t worth it.

I say this is a false rumor. FaceID can't be squeezed down that small yet I'm guessing. For the record, the notch doesn't bother me and a pin hole wouldn't either unless the pin hole requires the loss of features.

You clearly miss read, because this rumor said absolutely nothing about removing face ID.

So you're fine paying Apple premium so they can copy rather than innovate? That's like paying Morton's prices for McDonald's.

Ditch FaceID in the iPhones and iPads in favor of in-display TouchID.
Incorporate the front camera and earpiece speaker into the very narrow top bezel.
No Notch or Punch Hole needed, WinWin

Use FaceID for Macs, as they will always have slighting larger bezels.

After rereading my post maybe there is a 'the' missing between 'removing' and 'front'. Not a native speaker.

If this were true how would FaceID work? If they've managed to cram all the required tech into a single camera it seems unlikely there'd have been no rumours about that up until now. Also seems unlikely they'd reduce the accuracy and security of FaceID, or go to TouchID only (even if it's in-display).

I still notice it every time. Same goes for the thick bezels. This is NOT an all-screen device.

They didn't say "moving" camera, they said "remove" the camera. I'd be up for that personally (I use my iPad for FaceTime, literally never use the front facing camera on the phone), but I expect the number of likeminded people is so low that it wouldn't be worth them doing it as an option.

Heck, I'd happily sacrifice the read cameras to get rid of the bump (or at least take a much lower quality one).

Well to be honest, I am more interested in useful innovations than aesthetic innovations. I could really care less if it has a notch, or a punch hole, or nothing at all. It doesn’t affect me in the slightest.
I pay The Apple premium, because they’re premium products. They all work together, they have very little issues, and I’ve always had a great customer experience with them.
I’m not gonna ditch something that works simply because they didn’t do what “you” wanted them to do.

I hate anything that covers a piece of the display, it's just annoying. Even after almost a year of it, The Notch on my phone still sticks out to me because it always ends up covering something whether it's a picture, an app, or something on a website and requires working around it. Is it the end of the world and a deal breaker? No, but I'd rather it or anything similar not be there.

While all companies copy, Samsung won championship trophies 10+ years running in the "Copy your Tech for Profits" playoffs.

I don't think Apple would copy Samsung in ditching the notch for a hole punch. Apple always designs for a particular look. There are two ways to look at this rumor.
1) it's a way to root out leakers
or
2) they're looking at making the notch "seamless" in some way so it looks like it's a hole punch, but it's still a unique look. Honestly I would prefer a forehead so that landscape views aren't a hassle to deal with.

It's also possible Apple may surprise us with a design that uses the bezel in a cool way. Or under screen technologies.
Or expect the notch for years....

A version with no front camera and therefor no notch or punch hole would be way better.
You can always go back to a flip phone....or a jitterbug phone. No front camera would kill so much of the current usefulness. At that point just get a video player. You would lose all remote meeting abilities...which, like it or not is the future and is not going away.
