I’d think that moving to a punch hole cam also means moving to in-screen Touch ID, otherwise there’s no room for all the Face ID tech.

Notch = no persistent VPN status indicator = not in the running for purchase.
Only if they don’t change the current VPN indicator, and there’s no reason why they can’t. Colored dot, box around the signal bars, little “V” next to the carrier/WiFi icon. Stretch your imagination.

If this rumor is true, my guess it that the front-facing camera in the punch-hole will cover both the visible spectrum and the IR one.
And that they have found a way to hide the IR flood-illuminator and IR dot-projector under the display.

Ditch FaceID in the iPhones and iPads in favor of in-display TouchID.
Incorporate the front camera and earpiece speaker into the very narrow top bezel.
No Notch or Punch Hole needed, WinWin

Use FaceID for Macs, as they will always have slighting larger bezels.
and get rid of the rounded corners for the screen, and go back to an efficient rectangle ,with smaller radii on the device's circumference.

I really don't mind the notch if the Face ID really contributes to the overall user experience. However, thinner bezel would be nice.

I don't notice the notch, I doubt I would notice a punch hole either.

Same here. I don't notice the notch. Here's why:

When I'm using my phone in portrait... there's a bunch of stuff at the top of the screen anyway including the clock and other icons. And the app or website I'm using likely has crap at the top of the screen too. So who cares? Good thing Apple made these phones taller so you get more screen area than the iPhone 8 and previous phones. The notch isn't "taking away" screen since you already got extra screen when they made the phones taller.

And when I'm using my phone in landscape... I'm watching a video. And most videos I watch are 16:9 so they fit nicely between the notch and the side (bottom) of the phone. Even the trendy 2:1 videos fit too.

BTW... I'm not one of those monsters who "zooms in" the video, thus forcing the video into the notch. Why?

Because then I'm also chopping off the top and bottom of the video. Who does that?

Why would I purposely remove parts of the video to make the middle part a tiny bit bigger. It's a damn phone! If I'm watching anything serious and need to see it bigger... I'll do it on a real TV.

:p

The pinhole is less obtrusive. You're kidding yourself if you believe otherwise. It simple takes up less square area and doesn't impede content as much than a massive rectangular block.

If Apple can incorporate under the screen TouchID, then the pinhole is the way to go.
The only reason for a notch is FaceID. So it would obviously be not available on this model.

A notch or a punch hole, same thing for me.
As long as there is something, fullscreen videos will look weird.

I'm skeptical that Apple with do anything to the notch until they can put it behind the display. How many hole punches would Apple need? There's more than just the camera - they also have all the FaceID sensors in the notch.
