We don’t know that.

Or they could wait more and go for under display camera tech,Samsung is already rumoured to be developing this tech for next versions of Z Fold at least.
FaceID has an array of sensors and cameras so of course it wouldn't be a single small hole.

current FaceID no,but rumor is they are trying to fit them all in one.

That's a lot of stuff to fit in a single camera without increasing its size noticeably or affecting its image quality.

If the rumor that Apple can fit multiple sensors and cameras into a single camera, without increasing its size, proves true then yes they could go to a hole punch screen. Removing the notch without adding a bezel also means that Apple would need to redesign its earpiece speaker.

It is more realistic that Apple will reduce the width of the notch.

It’s definitely a challenge but that’s what the rumors are saying,it won’t be this year that’s for sure, they will likely implement smaller notch first, then the year after go for punch hole version.

or they might skip it altogether and wait for under display camera technology to materialise.

Samsung is heavily working on that and is rumored to use it in Z Fold 3 (or the next update).

Apple will just be buying the rest of Samsung’s punch hole display inventory since by Fall 2022, punch hole displays for Samsung phones will only exist in cheaper models and everything else will be behind the screen so once again Apple will profit well by buying cheaper outdated parts.

Now that the world is wise to what Apple is doing, people won't buy those phones that have cheap outdated parts. And if people don't buy the phones, Apple won't make a profit. Isn't that right?

No one you know has ever had a video call with their kids, parents, partners, spouses or friends? Ever?

I'm not doubting your personal assessment, just your generalisation.

I do indeed know many people that video chat, but exclusively on a laptop, desktop, and one that uses a iPad. Not one person I know uses their phone. i seems a bit daft to hold a phone out in front of yourself to video chat when you can sit at a desk or shove a laptop on your coffee table.

The vast majority of people who own smartphones aren’t tech enthusiasts who follow tech developments. There will be some that understand whether technology is outdated, but most won’t or won’t care because an iPhone is an iPhone.

That goes to the point that Apple provides an experience, not a bunch of tech specs. Tech specs translate into functionality and experience. Consumers (except for the fanboys often alleged in these posts), imo, make that decision about whether a particular product has the correct value to cost ratio for them.

Apple are also in a very fortunate position where their brand is incredibly strong and they don’t need to include everything the competitors offer. Features can be staggered and spread across multiple releases without affecting sales too much. I remember wireless charging was 5 years late but it didn’t matter in the iPhone sector. You’re right about experience as it seems to be more important along with value for money to the core iPhone user, hence why Apple now have so many iPhones in their range at the lower price points.

I was one of the first adopters of Face ID (iPhone X launch purchase),and initially was very impressed and didn’t care about notch, next I bought Xs Max and later another Xs Max but now with under display fingerprint technology finally becoming mature and reliable,I think it’s time for a change..an iPhone with both Touch ID and a new Face ID that is implemented in a punch hole.(until they figure out under display cameras

I think everyone looking at this picture will agree notch is very dated and must go.

I find the notch ridiculous - but honestly i dont care. The iphone looks cooler - I don’t like hole punch!
most important is Funktion - and even apple Face ID is not working very good- especal on iPad.

Face ID isn't working in the Age of the Facemask.

I look forward to the vaccine so that I won't have to wear the mask anymore and my iPhone will work right again. Well, that is unless and until I decide to take on a new career as a painter or surgeon.

Am I the only one who this "notch" thing just doesn't bother or affect me at all? It just isn't an issue for me. I don't get it.
I am 100% with you. Would it be nice to get rid of the notch? Sure. Have I ever complained about or lost even 5 seconds of sleep because of the notch? Nope! I am one of those users who normally upgrades to the new Pro Max every year so I will probably upgrade regardless of whether the notch stays, turns into a hole punch, or is eliminated completely.

You don't need to be seen in order to do those things. And frankly if you are in a Teams meeting it'll be on a real computer.

You do realize that FaceTime without a front facing camera makes zero sense, right? I mean, you don't NEED a smart phone, either. According to your explanation, I would think that you could FaceTime over a rotary phone just fine.

And personally, I use Teams on both a "real" computer as well as a phone. It depends on the circumstance. I work with field sales reps who almost always attend Teams meetings via phone.

All of these phones claim they are "full screen" and yet they all have some tiny bit if bezel around the whole display. Why not just make that little bit of bezel ever so slightly wider to accommodate the camera and therefore have no notch and no hole punch. I don't understand.

That either makes the screen smaller or the phone bigger.

By what - a few hairs? Look at the current bezel and look at the width of the camera - it's not that different, and I'm sure Apple has the capability to shrink the diameter of the camera further if needed.

The bezel would increase by the height of the notch, so the screen would either extend only to the bottom of the current notch, or the phone height would increase by the height of the notch.
