Why can’t they mimic the iPad Pro layout and just spread it over a thick edge ?

I assume they weren't able to shrink it enough to get bezels as slim as they wanted. It's probably a question of personal preference whether you would rather have a notch or a thick bezel.

If they could shrink the FaceID tech I'm sure many people would actually appreciate a small bezel for ergonomic reasons.

About damn time.

Oooh you shake your fist too...

People hold Apple to a different standard when it comes to flaws. If Apple had released the Fold people would still be wailing about #screengate but since its Samsung its already in the past.

Thats because the only people who have one are the bloggers that got them free... because they are junk.

I did a bit of googling... Apple's problem is that there isn't just face recognition in the notch, there's also camera, speaker, microphone, and four other bits. Some phones have a smaller notch - but they have a chin at the bottom of the screen! Easy to make the notch smaller if you waste space elsewhere.

If they can move _some_ bits invisibly behind the screen class (and invisible means you can put a display on top and it still works), then they could move those bits and make the notch smaller. The speaker can't be behind glass. The microphone you probably don't want behind glass. And the camera shouldn't be behind glass. Things like the camera, you probably don't want to display an image _while the camera is used_ so it might be possible to display things while the camera is not used, and then remove the display when the camera is used. Basically, a notch that magically appears when you take a selfie, so there is no interference between screen and camera.

Am I the only one who this "notch" thing just doesn't bother or affect me at all? It just isn't an issue for me. I don't get it.
It's not a big issue. I realise that on my XR, I gained a lot of screen at the bottom, and I lost a little bit at the top in the form of the notch, so all in all I'm better off. But quite obviously I would _prefer_ not to have the notch. I also realise that this is bloody hard to do. And I don't want a camera that slides out of the case.

I’ve just checked the settings. I have both ‘attention aware’ and ‘require attention’ turned on.
So you’re saying you don’t have to keep your head in front of the phone for it to unlock and can unlock it in every angle that you can see the screen? for example at an angle or when your heads tilted while lying down etc??
If so you’re very unique case and definitely not what other people experiencing.

I don’t understand the problem. My iPad works fine with facial recognition without that stripe across the top of it that the phone has. There’s a little dot on the short side of the iPad and facial recognition works fine. Having a fingerprint reader doesn’t work for me. During the cold months of the year and I live in a cold climate my hands dry out and my fingers crack and get abraded. What I have now on my iPad Pro is fine and the iPhone 12 is also great. As far as I am concerned the notch is a nit.

I may have misinterpreted your point, but the iPad doesnt have a notch because it has a thick bezel.

No notch iPhone please...

Since the iPad Pro doesn’t have a notch, why not iPhones too? I wouldn’t mind more bezel to achieve this...
The iPad Pro has a notch, it just stretches around the entire thing.

Bezels instead of a notch would means less vertical screen space since everything on either side of the notch would have to be moved down and there would be an equal sized bottom bezel.

No. I said I don't stare at the notch when unlocking my phone. Someone mentioned that you need to look at the notch, earlier in the thread.

EDIT: apologies, it was actually your post I responded to earlier about staring at the notch to unlock.

Well yeah not actually “staring” at the notch, but I mean you need to look at the center / top of the phone for at least 2 seconds while holding it straight.

I don’t hate Face ID but I want Touch ID option..and no notch..notch is definitely dated and a big disadvantage when you see other high end phones regardless of how effective Touch ID is.

Agreed, I'd love a Touch ID option too. The 11 I have is the first Face ID phone I've bought, and I've just been pleasantly surprised at how well it works. I never really think about staring at it straight on, sometimes it's flat on the table and I tap the screen and look and it unlocks 9/10. I was a bit apprehensive about it at first and used to use the pin unlock, but after I tried it out, I haven't looked back.

I look forward to the notch being removed also. Not because I dislike the look of it or anything, I just want more options for icons at the top. I miss that I could see the clock icon on my old iPhone 6 after setting an alarm. Due to the notch taking up space, it doesn't show up anymore.

I was one of the first adopters of Face ID (iPhone X launch purchase),and initially was very impressed and didn’t care about notch, next I bought Xs Max and later another Xs Max but now with under display fingerprint technology finally becoming mature and reliable,I think it’s time for a change..an iPhone with both Touch ID and a new Face ID that is implemented in a punch hole.(until they figure out under display cameras

I think everyone looking at this picture will agree notch is very dated and must go.

FaceID wouldn’t be a single hole like that and would be more of a longer slot. Might not be any better than what we have now anyway.

We don’t know that.

Or they could wait more and go for under display camera tech,Samsung is already rumoured to be developing this tech for next versions of Z Fold at least.
