The single camera could well be a variable focal length and aperture lens system. Such things have existed on Sony and Samsung phones in the past but never integrated together.

If Apple can pull a 18-120mm range with a f1.8-4 aperture with a single camera it would be an impressive feat of engineering but it wouldn’t be cheap to manufacture.

The phone may end up being 5mm thin but it wouldn’t still have a significant camera bump.

But every rumor so far has suggested it'll be the new high end model. And one of the prior reports said it would have lower specs but a higher price.

No, only The Information and a random Korean table shows it'll be priced higher. Every other analyst didn't comment on price. Kuo strongly implies it'll be priced lower since he says the high end iPhone market is already saturated with the existing models.

Sounds like an iPhone Air, and essentially a testbed for the Apple 5G chip. I hope between this and the new iPad Pro, Apple isn't pivoting back to form and thinness over function!

I like it how we are getting all of those "exciting" news about iPhone 17.

Meanwhile, we are all expecting that iPhone 16 will be meh, yes?

Here's how I see it:

iPhone X (new design)
iPhone XS
iPhone 11 = XSS
iPhone 12 (new design)
iPhone 13 = 12S
iPhone 14 (new design)
iPhone 15 = 14S
iPhone 16 = 14SS
iPhone 17 (new design)

So yeah, the 16 is going to be like the 11 in being a revision of a revision. For the "S" lover like me, it's a must-buy. :)

Until they do. It was very recent when the same could be said of Intel’s CPUs
CPU's and Modems are two very different things. CPU's are a dime a dozen (hence why there are so many companies who make them). How many modem producers are there? If this were CPU's I would 100% say apple will match it, but it has yet to be done so clearly it is much more challenging than doing CPU's (not to mention clearly the engineers they got from Intel can't figure it out or they would have done it years ago- like rumors said).

Maybe one camera with a looong periscope lens, hence the suggestion that it will have a ‘bar’ type camera lump instead of square. Having a really thick camera module would also accentuate how thin the rest of the device is.

iPhone Air incoming

iPhone 17
iPhone 17 Pro
iPhone 17 Air

Guarantee they’ll cop the existing product naming conventions or they’ll just go with “iPhone Air” with no number

They're transitioning to the iPod model. Was the most expensive iPod (iPod classic) the best? Maybe, but a lot of people bought nanos because they valued the design/form factor over the thicker one with maximum storage.

They're branching into iPhone slim for those who want the thinnest, most pocketable iPhone, and iPhone Pro for those who need maximum performance, features, storage, etc.

Now this wouldn't make sense with the slim being more expensive because the nano was also cheaper than the iPod classic. The slim will need to be cheaper than the pros.

I'm still not seeing how this device is to be priced more than the pro max. Like the mental gymnastics apple is going to have to pull to convince people to pay more FOR LESS is wild. This seems like it should be replacing the plus model and be priced as such.

Where does it says this rumored phone would be more expensive than a Pro Max? All the item says is...

The analyst added that while there will not be an iPhone 17 Plus, the new ultra-thin model will not be a replacement for it....

With no A19 Pro chip, a single camera, a slightly smaller display than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and a focus on design over specifications, it sounds like the ultra-thin model will not be the so-called highest-end "iPhone 17 Ultra" after all. It is now unclear exactly where the device will be positioned in the iPhone 17 lineup...

Kinda sounds like the opposite of being more expensive than a Pro Max.

5.6" smaller iPhone and we'll let the world continue to spin. Oh, and don't market it as "iPhone mini". Drop that silly name because when people here "mini iPhone" or "iPhone mini" in their mind they are imagining a phone with a 3" display.

It sounds like it will be super thin and light. Probably spectacular. I am still hoping for a real ultra, a Watch Ultra companion; not fake ultra like Samsung.

Reminds me of Jurassic Park when the kid had the night goggles on and the lawyer asked him if it was heavy and he said yes. Lawyer then said that means it’s expensive. Nowadays it’s reversed.
We all remember what happened to him immediately after saying this too.

14 is 12SS and 15 is new design though.

But no doubt this “thinnest iPhone ever” will have a huge camera module bump that for some reason they don’t take into account when measuring the depth of phones. The depth should be the thickest point of the phone, no point it all being thin if there’s a huge section protruding out the back.

I’d rather the cameras were flush with the back of the phone, and if that means the body is slightly thicker then so be it. More space for a bigger battery, or a much bigger camera sensor to improve the quality of the thing.

Sounds like a very expensive device, no matter where it's positioned.

"Ultra-Thin" = "Ultra Expensive"
Well there is no doubt in my mind that the product goal here is "a more expensive iPhone". Tim Cook has gone off the deep end in my opinion, and has steered Apple so far away from the product goals that made it a runaway success and growth machine in the mid-to-late 2000's. Tim Cook has been running a continuous social experiment for the last 5 or 6 cycles, to see what their brand loyalty can convince people to pay for something (mostly iPhone). Steadily moving that iPhone ASP higher and higher. And it has been working. Some might say this is just a CEO of a massive company doing his job by increasing revenue and growth by any means necessary. Others would say this a divergence from the mindset that Steve Jobs put in place, which was to prioritize the products and the customer, and the sales and loyalty will come with it. (and they did).

Single camera in the back is fine for me, I have no use for the second lens unless it's a telephoto lens.

The market may think otherwise though.

I really liked when there was only one iPhone available.
What's wrong with having options? Apple has 5 current iPhone models: Pro Max, Pro, Plus, 15, SE. Apple also sells some older models (14 Plus, 14, and 13), but while you can buy then new from Apple, they are not updated phones like the current ones (the SE might be getting updated if rumors are true, so I'm including it with the other 4). If this rumor is true and if the rumors that Apple is dropping the Plus model, it looks like there will still be 5 current models. That's not a lot.

Lost me at "current-size Dynamic Island". If they are going for "all-new-design" they should do something about that horrible screen cutout.

Wow this went from being an iPhone Ultra to something less capable than the standard iPhone 17 especially with only 1 camera. The only way I do see this making sense is if this ends up being the "iPhone Fold" which would make sense why it needs to be so thin.

Otherwise a super thin single lens iPhone just sounds like Tim is running out of ideas...
