Not only do they need to keep the "smaller" screen as well but also make them have the same internals. Then everyone is happy. I don't want the big iPhone being the flagship and the smaller one being the 5C...

Hardly makes any sense at all, that. Bigger is pretty much the flagship everywhere. Why? Because you can usually fit more power and things in it. My 7" phone, (for example), can fit more battery, RAM, processor etc etc than the model below it. Hence you can probably do more with it. Those people right now saying, 'make it as powerful as the larger brethren', will soon be saying, 'why can't they fit more RAM in it', about the bigger item.

At some stage the extra power available, (due to the above points), will allow you to connect to an external display and use in place of a normal computer.

Nobody wants a bigger iPhone. iPhone 5s is already the perfect size. These rumors are stupid.
Not sure if srs...

Why do people get so emotional about the screen size of their phones? You like your 3.5 inch screen? Great! My girlfriend still has a 4S and I hate trying to do something on it even compared to my 5.

But here's the thing: I'm a pretty big dude. I'm 6'4", 185 lbs. I'm not concerned about being able to reach 100% of my phone's screen with one hand -- I think I'll be able to as long as it's 5" or smaller, and I'm fine using two hands when necessary. Also, I'm not concerned about carrying around a phone that takes up more space (though does anyone think Apple is going to make a THICKER phone even if it increases the screen size?) because I have pretty big pockets.

The point is: you like your small screen? Great. Have at it. But there is nothing wrong with Apple offering a larger screen for those that want it.

EDIT Also, you can pretty well predict that Apple will charge more money for the larger phone, so all of you crying about these rumors should take solace in the fact that all those suckers going for the bigger, "unusable" phone will be paying more for it.

What about:

3.5" iPhone Mini to replace the 4s
4.2" iPhone Air to replace the 5s
4.9" iPhone Pro

They will not be going back to the 3.5in screen.

I welcome as many screen sizes as they decided to release. I think around 4.7 would be perfect.

Legitimate question

When we discuss phone sizes inevitably multiple people post some variation of "Gotta fit in my pocket." My question: What type of pants would one wear where they would experience difficulty fitting a 4.5 - 5" phone in the pocket?

I'm honestly confused and curious. A Note? Yeah I understand that. I can also understand those who like the 1 handed operation. I have a medium hand size and to 1-hand my GS3 I rest it on my fingers instead of gripping it. I typically two hand operate.

But the pants? Unfortunately, 2 days a week we have to dress a minimum standard of business casual at my cube farm (hate Monday & Wednesday). My phone barely breaks the line of my pants crease. Jeans, shorts & sweats on the other days don't even register on the "Is that a phone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me" meter.

"With the iPhone 6, we've achieved something quite incredible.
We've improved the iPhone's screen without sacrificing the beauty and the comfort of using the iPhone.
We have worked hard to give our customers an amazing new 4.9 inch screen, but keeping it within the same size and weight of iPhone that we know and love.
This has required new developments in materials design and engineering. And I'm incredibly proud of what we have created...."

4.9 inch iPhone 6.
Overall device same height, thickness and weight as iPhone 5s. (Just a teeny bit wider)

Nooo!!!

I hope they still keep the 4" model. I've tried large phones and don't want one! 4" is just perfect for me.

Used an S4 last night. Just terrible. Could not operate it with one hand. Couldn't reach notification center. Nearly dropped it a few times just trying to navigate one handed. I hope Apple keeps it down towards 4.3-4.7. I haven't had a chance to try a Moto X yet.

Just because you have tiny girl hands doesn't mean everyone else has.

iPhone Nano, iPhone Normale, iPhone Gigante. Something for everyone.

All will have proper proportions. It will be interesting to hear how the tall format got approved, but it will be a brief chapter in the history of Apple design.

Maybe 2 years ago there was a problem with screen size and usability.

These days you get something like the Moto X, which is nearly the same size as the iPhone 5 but is rockin a 4.7" display.

Apple really has no excuse or reason to stay small given current tech.

I think apple goal is to stretch the dollar out as far as they can buy giving incremental upgrades every year.

I would welcome it

I have an iPhone 5, my wife just got a Galaxy S4. I'll probably always be an Apple person, but honestly, when I pick up her phone, I REALLY like it. My iPhone 5 feels thick and clunky, like I'm picking up a brick. Her S4 feels smooth, thin, almost would describe it as svelte. I haven't done any actual testing, but just looking side-by-side, I'd take her screen over mine too.

But not the operating system. I can't stand Android, give me iOS any day.

true.

Besides, how many of you people actually owned a bigger screen phone so you can say "i dont want it because i dont like it". Truthfully i havent met not one person that would say "oh man this screen is too big its just HORRIBLE!". Everybody loves bigger screens wether its a TV or a phone and thats a fact;)

If I have to hear about this nonstop for another entire year, I am abandoning this website.

I agree, to an extent, which makes these claims of going from 4 to 5 inches questionable.

At most I expect a jump to 4.5", which I personally think is a very good size.

It's a good size that Apple can easily keep for 2 years and then consider moving to a 4.7" or 5"

Resolution Fragmentation

I would think that unless the size is a ratio that is comparable to the current screen size and resolution, then Apple and it's developers will suffer the same screen fragmentation that plagues Android devices.

Will developer's need to include several versions of icons and graphics for each i-device screen and resolution?

Unless Apple adopts the HD resolution, I don't see them having another screen ratio to contend with.

By the way, what size would allow the benefit of a larger screen but could easily be resized for a developer?

And if it forgoes the screen ratio and just increases the real estate of the iPhone, by allowing more columns and rows, then it could be possible? I think.

Nobody? Don't be stupid plenty of people want (and would buy) a bigger iPhone. I know I would for one.

Obviously you don't exist.

None of those people you see happily using Galaxy S4s and Notes really exist - the shadowy enemies of Apple employ thousands of actors to walk around pretending to use phablets.

No item of clothing has ever been made with pockets that could accommodate a 5" phone, nor does anybody habitually carry their phone in a handbag. Nobody who buys a smartphone wants to use it mainly for web, email, maps/GPS etc. - anybody who thinks the tall narrow screen on an iPhone 5 is a poor shape for those things is insane. The dimensions of the iPhone 5 have cosmic significance and help keep the battery charged. If Apple produced a larger screen iPhone they'd have to drop the current model, and probably send gangs of armed thugs around to confiscate them from anybody who had one. Even though Apple offer a choice of sizes of iPad, iPod, MacBook and iMac, offering a choice of iPhone sizes would violate the fundamental laws of Physics and precipitate Armageddon.

Now prostrate yourself facing Cupertino and apologise nicely for your heresy.
