Sounds like the exact process for me on my new 27 inch. I just received my replacement today. Just transferring files.

While do you have to transfer your files if it's only a screen replacement? Did you wipe it before sending it?

Called up Apple Care yesterday. Mentioned my yellow tint lower half of the screen. It's not That much appearant, but bugs me when I have a lighter screen displaying (grey, white, mostly pale colors) of course.

They made me restart in safe mode and such, and at the end (the sr. Advisor) said ok it's definetely a hardware issue. I can setup a genius bar appointment so they can replace the screen.

Anyone offered this yet? I thought they only swaped computers out. I don't mind just getting a new screen but my fear is them reinstalling it and not having done any yet and me being the "test" guy. My Apple storeis fairly small, and I doubt a lot of people has brought in iMacs to have a screen replaced (1st time I visited the store just to question on my issue).
Since you're outside of the 14-day return window, you'll get a repair rather than a replacement.

This is a much more civilized get-together than over on our rMBP side!

It was a direct replacement for the previous one. The replacement was exchanged yesterday for an issue not related to the yellowing issue.

Went to my local retailer yesterday, both of their 27" iMacs had this problem, easily detectable under fluorescents. I didn't see the problem on the Thunderbolt display they had, nor any macbooks.

So yeah… the replacement iMac was delivered to me a couple days ago and I finally got a chance to open the shipping box to check it out last night. I was pleasantly surprised that it contained a Mavericks box and that Mavericks was pre-installed. I thought that was a positive development. :)

Unfortunately, this iMac has the same "yellow screen" issue we've been talking about. :(

That is two iMacs delivered to my home plus the three I saw in the Apple Store nearby. It also seems to me that nobody that has noticed this as being a problem has ever gotten a "good" screen as part of returns. What are the odds that they are all just from bad luck? Pretty darn slim if you ask me. I have to think these are just the way they are now.

Funny that I don't remember this being a problem on my previous iMac (although it might have been and I just never noticed). I almost didn't notice it this time until I found this darn thread.

I dunno at this point. I do want an AIO computer and the one I prefer is the iMac. Should I just keep the new one or give up? What are you guys doing?

Yellow screen issue and fan noise are the two standard problems of current gen imacs. And i say standard because every single machine is bound to be affected at some point. Some people notice them, some don't.

I had two returned myself. One was clearly a yellow tint issue, and another had a weird chipped screen issue. The second had a better screen, as far as the yellow tint goes. After my last return, I went and purchased an in store configuration, and this one really is a nice improvement over the first. I don't think it's perfect, but it doesn't have the areas of severe color issue in the corners and bottom like the first one did. As long as this recent one holds up, I'm not returning it.

Is there something in the manufacturing process for Mac screens (no matter the manufacturer) which accounts for the yellowing problem as compared to say a "PC" screen? Are they somehow made Differently?

I read somewhere the light appears warmer because the coating they use to diffuse the light from the backlight is applied too thickly. I have no link or reference for that, so I'm likely wrong

Just set up my 2013 BTO 27" iMac. It was assembled in USA and came with Mavericks. Looks great so far, no yellow areas on the screen. Very even color all over, screen looks beautiful.

My late 2009 had the yellow screen problem on the bottom third of the screen, I never got used to it. This new one is VERY nice.

I have the yellow gradient issue, this is my 3rd iMac 27 (3TB FD) and my results are:

  • 1st iMac: Had moderate yellow gradient but had a bright pixel and light bleeding on a corner.
  • 2nd iMac: Just opened and noticed 2 bright pixels so immediately boxed it again. I did't check yellow gradient.
  • 3rd iMac: Yellow gradient is more noticeable than 1st iMac but NO dead or bright pixels, NO light bleeding, NO image retention.

I spoke to Apple Care and they told me to keep it and get a discount or return it and get a full refund. They told me that they won't send me another replacement.

I've passed over 6 iMacs in total, 3 from last year's setup (which I finally returned for dust and dead pixel issues) and 3 from this year.

I'm not sure what to do as I can see that many of you have the yellow gradient issue and my screen have no other issues but this. Maybe if I order a new one could have less yellow tinting but image retention, which I considered to be a real problem.

Really tired of returning and setting up iMacs...

Edit 1: My iMac is assembled in Ireland.
Edit 2: The photo is taken in angle so you can clearly see it.

Tomorrow my second iMac will be collected for return.

First iMac had a small amount of yellowing across the bottom but once colour corrected and the monitor angle was correct, it wasn't noticeable (only noticeable if you stood up and looked down at the screen). I am pretty convinced mine was more a combination of the very warm white point apple set and also the angle of the screen. Returned as it would not work with more than 24GB of third party RAM.

Second iMac (w 32GB of apple RAM), packaging was not very neat (cellophane twisted/bent on almost every application, grass/dirt under the sticker that seals the iMac box). Switched it on and it has a dark streak down the centre of the screen and also a patchy/mottled look (uneven lighting).

Mine too were assembled in Ireland.

If this third one comes with a cr*p screen, i'm not sure what I am going to do. I'm really disappointed in the quality I have seen so far. Personally I cannot even imagine going back to a windows machine so I suppose my only option would be save up another £1k (on top of the £3k i have spent on the 'amazing' iMac) and just buy a mac pro with a decent quality third party screen :-/

I also noticed that I have a warmer tone compared to my first iMac, which I still own waiting for being returned. Comparing both, the first had a more greenish tone.

Do you have any photos?

Worth mentioning that the four iMacs I've been through (now given up) were all assembled in Ireland

That's because we are from Europe ;) I'm from Spain.
I tried to reproduce the same photo that you posted and it looks almost identical.

Mine was also assembled in Ireland and as mentioned before, it has the yellow gradient and a little light bleed at the bottom. I think I am going to just accept that this is the way they are as if I return it for another one the chances are it will be similar. I recently looked at one in John Lewis store and that had the same issue. When they finally cure this problem then I might sell this one and buy a new one but until then I'll live with it.

A comparison between my iMac #3 (left) and iMac #1 (right) which I mentioned before.

I wonder why they can't get their arms around this issue. It's not like it's hard to notice. They sure over-hype the superiority of the iMac's display if it continues to have issues like this.

Oh well, like I said, that's why (among other reasons) I'm getting a nMP this time around.

Hey guys.

So, I did a little more poking around and noticed that while not yellow my MBP does show a very slight color difference from top to bottom (it is more bluish). I remember when I got my new iPhone 5 it was much more yellow than my iPhone 4 (more bluish). This got me thinking that maybe I could adjust the White Point on my iMac.

So I went into Displays > Color > Calibrate > Expert Mode (if you don't use Expert Mode you won't be able to change the Target White Point).

Anyway, starting with the default iMac profile I made some changes. At 6500 (default) there is yellowing but if I shift this closer to the blue by increasing the White Point by even just a little, (7000) in my case, most if not all of the offensive yellow is gone. I saved the profile using the suggested name and I'm using it now to see if this is acceptable long term.

If you have a truly defective screen this won't help but if it's just that Apple has tended to prefer warmer color screens lately this is a way to shift it back.

Maybe it's worth a try for you guys too?

All screens have a slight color difference comparing top to bottom, or side to side. The problem comes when the difference between them is above normal so you can notice.

It is not an issue about color temperature. I can set it to 7000k which may reduce yellowing effect on bottom but top will always be more blue, causing the same issue at all.

Anyway, I set it to 6750 and I'm a bit happier now because it looks very similar to my 1st iMac, which had the same issue but less noticeable (I returned it mainly for other things).

Sure, I'm not saying that these screens shouldn't be better. I'm just suggesting that for those who feel a little stuck (like me) that this is one way to deal with the situation.
