Are you serious? I bet if a restaurant did an AB test, the AR menu would increase average spending per table exponentially. One of the biggest barrier to entries to a new restaurant is not knowing what to order. Thats why people look at food pictures on yelp all the time.

Now imagine having the food displayed right in front of you in AR, along with reviews and people's comments.

Now imagine doing that BEFORE you even decide on what restaurant to go to, all in the comfort of you home.

This is game changing. Can't believe how people are calling this a gimmick

Well, I disagree that this would increase spending exponentially since that would mean going from $15 to $225, but the real point he's making and that you're not addressing is the AR aspect to it.

Why AR? Why not just use photorealistic CG on a virtual table that responds the exact same way with a virtual camera? What exactly is the benefit of seeing CG on your table vs a virtual table? You can view the exact same 3d objects without any AR and they look exactly the same.

You realize when AR is perfected that Apple will move on to AR VR glasses with EarPods for a total immersion.
You think it's bad now with all kids heads down fiddling with their phones? You haven't seen anything yet. They'll all be tuned out as AVR zombies.
[doublepost=1503957283][/doublepost]Too bad that SJ never got to see his iPhone reach this level of AR complexity.

*sigh* The point of AR is making use of real objects and settings in a useful and unique way, and such that virtual objects interact with real objects.

If the digital assets can't act uniquely based on real world environments, then it serves little purpose beyond visualization.

For example, why would you want your game characters to show up on your table vs a virtual table unless that table provides some sort of unique interaction? If it's just a plane for them to exist on, it might as well be entirely virtual since the real world environment is irrelevant to interaction.

I guess I'm getting old. The more new tech I see the more I feel it adds zero value. Just new ways to entertain ourselves with games......I am getting old.
I agree, must be getting old as well.. I see zero excitement in VR or AR these days. Looks like Nintendo 64 type graphics at best.

God what a bunch of miserable comments the top few are. “I won’t ever find a use for this therefore this is a waste!”

If you can’t find the potential with this then I don’t know what to say. This is just the start and yes it won’t reach its full potential until Apple unveils some glasses for it.

Ordering and eating VR food could be a great new diet fad. Bulimics rejoice!

Food ordering eh? Have you seen those commercials that showcase heavenly looking dishes only to find out later that they look like Shrek's droppings (no offense Shrek) when u actually order them? As for sizing the portion, it's probably faster to peek at what the next table orders and decide for myself.
I can see a potential new fad though: ARKit- diet. "U can see, feel and pretend to eat all the yummy goodness that you can dream of". =)

Now they just need an ARKit app that allows you to point your device at two Apple products and get a visual of the cords, adaptors, and dongles required to connect them. It could even list their cumulative price!

I don't know... AirDrop seems to work pretty well.

Now, if you're referring to other accessories (Disc Drives, external hard drives, card readers, etc.) then you may have an argument.
:)

By the way, you had a highly rated meme/gif from a post last week that made me chuckle. Kudos!

great tech demos. now we just need a device where we don't have to hold a tiny screen in front of our face to make use of it. or it's just the same, unsuccessfull AR we've already got for years, only with better tracking and graphics.

To those of you saying this is a gimmick, consider a use case whereby your entire windshield could have imagery overlaid on it, including vehicle and navigation info.

I think that would be great, plus you wouldn't have to wear any glasses!

I know it‘s only a demo, but what is the advantage of watching the food in AR? It doesn‘t offer anything over just watching a video, apart from being able to see it on YOUR table and plate (yay)?
And the one in the standing restaurant is even worse, is there even any „R“ on the screen?

Many (most?) restaurants would rather you didn't have a 3D representation of what your food is supposed to look like for you to compare what it does look like when it arrives.

And who exactly are selling such virtual tables and at what cost ? Why would any restaurant want to make such investment when their customers already have required hardware in their pocket ? Why limit the viewing experience just to the restaurants virtual table, when one can do the same at home or at the bus station before I go there ?

Hmm guessing AR is a concept for now....I have no use for this in its current state. Kids can enjoy Pokemon I guess.

A use case? That use case has been around for YEARS in the military on the cockpit of fighter planes and HUD displays in the helmets. It's not even new at all. What Apple's bringing is OLD. NEWS.

Cook ( smoking crack ): Oh...look at the potential of AR in our iPhones! Oooh! Money! Money! Money!

US Air Force ( tapping on Cook's shoulder ): Fool, please. We've had that for years. Where were you when that was around? You should have the Glasses out first in the same time with AR, not long after.

The kids will love the new AR pets.

Agreed. IMO, this is going to be huge in AR. Hopefully developers can turn it into something that stimulates cerebral development. Kids already are too glued to their iPads. :apple:

True, but Raytheon, Lockheed, and Boeing don't develop for "Cooking in the Kitchen" either. ;)

My husband's truck has some of that already and it's really great. He doesn't need to really take his eyes off the road to get some info like vehicle speed and some of the other items from his standard display. I can't remember if any nav info is on it.

Looking forward to putting my fingers that I'm going to eat with on a tablet that 96 customers and kids have already slimed all over...

Doesn't anyone think these things through?

Pretty much everything released by Apple post Steve Jobs adds zero value for the users
...yet it adds a lot a zeros to Apple's offshore cash pile -- and that is all that matters, right?
Timmy needs a new yacht!

Okay...mac pro needs to hurry up and get released. I would love to use latest "hopefully" upgradable mac pro tech to work on ar. I love the food ar. It would give me a better sense of what the food looks like. The zombie game? It killed psvr. Let's roll out. I love to make a game with that kinda experience.
